We could also implement a mini-installation, which install only the
minimum applications. So you could be able to install Lubuntu on a
smaller disk, and install later applications that you really need.

Newer versions tend to have more features which will cost a little bit more 
harddrive space. A upgrade from an already running machine should be possibile 
if you update only the installed components and not metapackages like lubuntu-
desktop for example (which will pull all its depencies)

It doesn't take much more space than previous versions.  The 3.2GB is just some 
arbitrary amount of space to give you a bit of room for swap etc.  I've 
installed in to a 3GB partion OK.
