Dear Craig and All: If you look to contemporary guitar solos for models of accompaniment (i.e., Corbetta, Sanz, Bartelotti), you'll find a mix of strumming and plucking. The guitar was meant to be strummed, so I would say don't feel reluctant to strum a big chord if the music seems to call for
