I have played through the Barley orpharion pieces several times and
have not come up with specific traits that make those pieces
orparhion pieces rather than lute pieces. That said, I have put a
bit of thought into what makes a good orparhion piece and how it's
different from something
No question the Barley pieces are thin, which favors the orpharion,
but one would have to look much further into it.
For example, are other exemplars, not related to Barley, thin in the
same way, yet only for lute.
And the temperament issue alone is a big job. The thinness, the

For the period in question, 1516-1598 I should think vihuelas are well
within reason and fiddles and bows went in a lot of directions. Capos

I am sure Pat has it, because I copied it from him. It was included in some
Parisian publication of canzonettas with guitar, both score and tab. I am
pretty sure it is in the house, because I didn't give it to anyone. HOWEVER,
it is not that interesting in its original form.

I believe this was also featured on an early LP recording by theWaverly Consort
called Italia Mia. I don't know that it was everreissued as a tape or CD. I
believe it appeared in the early 1970s.
I used to play it with a tenor vocalist in 1995.

PLEASE look for it, Roman. Are you certain? It's from a dramma
giocoso dated ca. 1747. So in 1747 the accompaniment would
probably be orchestra.
Here's a poor score from those song antholgies:

Tomorrow I'll have a little concert with some three- and four-part songs,

The Barley pieces are thin and range from simple
tunes to the Dowland Go from my Window. But I am
not sure that the thin is an especailly
