Dear lute list
I'm pleased to announce the new Lute Iconography Database is now online.
The Lute Iconography Database (LuteIDB) is an online resource for lute
makers, scholars, players and others interested in the iconography of
the lute. It contains around 2000 iconographic entries depicting lutes
including oil paintings, carvings, frescos and so on, that have survived
the ravages of time. These are gathered together as a resource for the
community and now available online.
There is a home page for LuteIDB on The Lute Society's website providing
further details about how to access the data and query it, and a brief
user guide:

The original version of LuteIDB was developed by David Van Edwards over
many years with additional submissions from other contributors. The
original version was created using FileMaker Pro, and my contribution
has been to work with David to migrate this fascinating resource online
so it can be more widely appreciated.
It is hosted using a system called YouTrack. YouTrack originally was
designed to manage an "issues" database (e.g. software bug reporting),
but with some imagination it can be adapted for other uses. In
particular the search engine facilities of YouTrack are incredibly
powerful, and you can search by keyword as well as by attributes
together, including by date. For example here is a query to retrieve all
depictions created in Italy between 1500 and 1550:
https://lute-images.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issues/LI?q=country:%20Italy%20date:%201500%20..%201550
Happy searching and browsing!
- Luke
