One interesting thing about Dowland's recommendations are that the
higher frets are much smaller diameter than any I have ever seen used
by modern players - including me. They should enable a lute to be 'set
finer' (ie with minimal string/fingerboard clearance at higher frets)

Dear Anthony,
I am always astonished about the strange signs, line breaks aso. in
your mails.
Did you program the mail client yourself ? ;-))
In the following text for a'NOT read EUR (Euro, (still) a
currency)).
So there IS a kingham case, not a'NOT Kingham case :-)
Can anyone advise me on buying an RCH case? I need to get mobile with
my student lute and am willing to accept that it won't be as good as a
Kingham case.
Please email me off-list, if you think it's more appropriate.
Cheers - Stuart McLuckie

Dear Bernd
In this case I forgot to send it in simple text, but even when
I do, I get no line breaks, so have to put in an arbitrary symbol to
make a break. I am not happy about that, but I am communicating from
Yahoo Mail, and it should be compatible. There is no problem
Ed, I will ask Miguel, I think he is trying out different lutes with
almost each project.
I know he used this with his last CD, and I heard the recording, and it
sounds good. I forgot to say that the lute
is by Renzo Salvador (Belgium)

Thinner upper frets are extremely important on viols, for a simple reason that
the note half-a-step above the top fret (b flat on the bass viol) is impossible
to get to sound well and be in tune with a high fret nearby. Since early lutes
did not have the cheating frets on the lute table, and
Miguel confirms what I thought, he is experimenting with different
lutes. However, I must state that I am not myself selling this lute, I
only agreed to send Miguel's message on to the list for information.
Any queries about seeing and trying out the lute
must therefore be addressed
I have one for my archlute from Paolo Busato and the case is fine. r

Subject: [LUTE] RCH cases
Can anyone advise
I have had an RCH case for my 7c lute for the past ten years or so.
It's fine. If I had a criticism it is that the handle is a bit near to
the bottom end and the case tends to dangle head down when I'm carrying
it. Easily fixed, if I could be bothered.
