Folks,
Sean Smith has kindly sent me two more hi-res pics of the ambassador
painting. Thank you, Sean. I have removed the old pics from my website
and have uploaded a very primitive HTML file with links to the full-res
pics.

Robert,
This book in English was published in a French series, so you may be able
easily to find it in a local library.
There is a modern edition of "La Magdalena" and after dances with tablature
(by Pierre Blondeau from Dixhuit basses dances) is available in one of the
"classic" editions of lute
I am going to look forward to finding out how Jon's flat back turns out and
if he likes it. But unlike him, I'm boycotting the World Series.. How can
anyone cheer a baseball team named after a fish?
Some one suggested a few weeks ago using dental abrasive to sand groves for
the strings. My dentis
Stewart,
I think there's enough detail in the globe to the left of the lute to see
that a number of countries are "color coded". I think it may even have been
related to religion. I will photo it too and send it to Gernot. Yes, please
make these images avilable to any.

This is classic lutar repertoire. Probably German Volkslieder and the like set
for 6string. It is First Treasure of Songs, therefore probably very easy.

Hi Jon:
I realize what you are saying, my question was does anyone recognize the
composition? It would be very interesting if that is so, and it would also
demonstrate the artists attempt to be accurate in his still life, more or
less blowing out of the water the argument that an artistic renditi

I have looked at the tuning instructions (the picture - I have not translated the
Latin instructions) in the foreword.
I understand that the first two courses have to be an octave lower than on a "normal"
lute.
Strictly speaking all other courses have to be an octave higher - a little theorbo o

Dear e-friends, et chers e-amis,
I have posted a PDF of a remarkable set of variations on a rather bitter
Ukrainian folk song which dates from ca. 1780. It laments the abolition of
the last remaining Ukrainian liberties by a decree of Catherine "the great".
MP3 is included (all on page 4)

Dear Jon,
The music in Holbein's painting "The Ambassadors" has been
identified as a Lutheran hymn of some sort. I'm afraid I don't have
the details to hand.
It is worth making the point that lutenists don't have to play from
tablature. It is possible to play the lute reading from staff
notation,
Well that last concert was great fun. I'm off now to play bebop. See you =
on the far side.
Wayne, I'm so sorry but I've forgotten how to get off these lists: lute, =
medieval lute, baroque lute and lute makers. Could you pull the plug?
Cheers y'all,

OK, some have asked for progress reports (and some consider it anathema). At
this point the shape is made for the body, and I've got about six hours of
using my favorite hand rasps and my B&D mouse sander in shaping the neck to
fit my hand shape. That latter done in front of the TV with the Yankees

Forgot to point out that the printed music is in an approximation of the
modern clef rather than the tabulature. The fret based tabulature of the
lute music we read is a guide to performance rather than music as such. It
can only be played on a lute, or with a knowledge of the lute so that one

Wow Gernot,
I think I may have seen that Holbein years ago, but didn't associate it
then. What lovely detail, almost a primer on the construction of a lute. I
confess I'd associated Holbein with some of his other styles, the rakish
villagers and such.
