That was neat. Pretty much a thumb under position.

Yes, portuguese guitar is played mainly with «dos dedos» and «dedillo»
techniques, using
artificial nails acting as picks. You can see this playing style clearly
in this performance of one of the most aclaimed portuguese guitar
players, Pedro Caldeira Cabral, using tortoise shell nails

Hey, did a little research about the portuguese guitars. Players never
don't play directly with the finger tips, but with the nails. Even
then, many choose to use fingerpicks and not the natural nail.
These picks were traditionally chiseled from tortoiseshell, but are now
   made from various plastics.
Hope this clears things up. I doubt it's healthy or practical to play
with the fingertips. Pretty sure that would cause scarring and abnormal
amounts of calluses, in turn making playing hard.

I play wire-strung instruments with the same technique as lute or early guitar.
I mean lightly built, lightly strung instruments (English guitar, bandora etc)
not modern heavily built instruments strung with the sort of wire that Batman's
Joker uses to bring down airliners.

The portuguese guitar I listened to, was played virtuoso, both melodic
and chordal. And yes, I bet the performer had some thick callouses. I
was surprised to se that he used thumb in technique.

[LUTE] Re: Portuguise gitar and Yamaha G1

2018-07-06 Thread Jurgen Frenz
There are interesting options with today's guitar technology. I use a Cordoba
"mini" travel guitar for finding fingerings, writing tabs etc on my desk where
I wouldn't like to take my lute because of reduced space and the too high
humidity. That guitar with the a string length of 55cm comes with specially
designed Aquila strings to tune it in A. I tune those strings down to
renaissance tuning in G, the string tension is even more comfortable. Using the
strap to suspend the guitar on me allows to use thumb out as well.

Best
Jurgen
