BTW, here is a workaround for you:
* Save your bib file in ~/texmf/bibtex/bib/ (create this directory if it
does not exist yet)
* in a Terminal, run "texhash"
* in the LyX bibtex dialog, hit "Rescan"
Now your database should be in the list of selectable databases that
appears when you click "Add..." in the bibtex dialog. I suppose you can
select it from there without getting a crash.
