useful? 


You mean I could just set the math background color to the work area 
background color? I guess the downside of this is that math within 
insets with background color different from the work area might look 
funny - depending on the work area background.


But I guess that is acceptable. I just wanted to check whether that is a 
know "bug" (I guess it is not even really a bug since one cannot choose 
transparent from within the LyX GUI).

This might happen indeed... But does this transparent color do something 
useful? I do not think that we handle it.

Steps to reproduce might be helpful:

1. Set the mathbg in the preferences file to "transparent"
2. Create a document with two paragraph containing math
3. Select the math in one

Actual result:

- Math is rendered thick in the other
