I would suggest we meet Mon 11 Jan, 5pm CET (4pm UTC, 11am EST) unless
there is a better proposal.

I could send zoom invitiation if you all are ok with that. Otherwise suggest
your tool and manage the managment side of the meeting.

It would make sense to collect items of our agenda, I'll start with the obious:

Based on the devs who showed interest in this thread it should be
afternoon/evening UTC to have EU+US common ground.

I have Zoom through my university account, so we can use that if need be
without restrictions on number of attendees or time. I'm happy to
explore open source alternatives, but in this case it might be best just
to be lazy.

Thanks for all the replies.

Then we have to decide the next actions, when and where?

The when is obvious and the where is what platform to use. LWN had some
stories about possible alternatives. From a pure free software point of view
there are two options Jitsi and BigBlueButton:
Jitsi
https://lwn.net/Articles/815751/
BigBlueButton
https://lwn.net/Articles/817146/

The jitsi instance can be used on https://meet.jit.si/

Then there are of course other options. :-)

More seriously, I will join if I'm free but I don't have a fixed schedule so

Virtual meetings

2020-12-15 Thread José Abílio Matos
Hi,
I mentioned this with Jean-Marc on July and I think that it would be nice to
mention it here.

The idea for this come, not only from this year exceptional situation aka
pandemics, but also from the Octave project.

They had more or less one hour meetings to take the status of the project
and to coordinate the next stable release, that it was supposed to be released
this almost one year ago. The goal was achieved, octave 6.1.0 was released
last month.

There are several advantages and several drawbacks. In terms of advantages we
all know that sometimes mailing lists are not the best communication medium
(an absolute understatement).
Of course that this does not replace the face to face meetings but they are a
nice surrogate.

On the minus side by now most of us should have virtual meetings fatigue. :-)
And we would need to find a mutual schedule that should be a compromise
between the different time zones.

What do you think?

PS: Last week I was in Greece (again virtually) in the Conference on Complex
Systems that had participants from 17 different time zones. :-)
