Maybe if you edit the .lyx file with a text editor (which I don't
recommend). I think the feature you're hoping for (which doesn't exist
yet) would be a layout tag

My collaborator, who is new to LyX and worries about how to make a Glossary,
made a change and ran it, generating the Glossary, so I’s probably my
preferences.
I probably will remove all my preferences and see whether this changes things.
And then I can manually add one by one.
I goofed and put a table in a figure float. Can I directly convert it? If
not I'll cut-and-past the table elsewhere, create a table float and put it
in there.
Must not have been sufficiently cafinated when I did this.

I have removed the preferences file and then it works.
I have added a few preferences and it still works.
If I change the screen background color to white it fails. I'd really
like to have someone try this out and if that is the cause figure out
why and what can be done to fix this.

The attached mwe.lyx has a longtable. Aside from my problems getting a
caption on it, when I look at the dvips preview I see that the second row
(bluegill) is now the top row on the following page. WTF? How did it move
from row 2 to row 15? Sigh.

The current document has one multipage table and I've just added a second
one, including an additional row on the top for the caption.
Right-click on a table cell brought up the table menu and I selected
Settings -> Multipage table. Turned on heading, too.
