I finally got around the problem (did not solve it!) by assigning the
default pdf output format to pdf(xetex) in the
preferences/fileHandling/fileformats dialog.
So I now have a functioning Lyx system on XP, although it functions
differently from the way it used to.

I encountered the problem on Windows XP. I had no such problem on
(l)ubuntu 12.10 machines (32 or 64 bits).
I shall try the re-installation on XP and report back.
