To add packages to Lyx do the following: 1. Get the package you need from CTAN or by Googling it and copying the text file packagename.sty to the appropriate place (depending on your operating system: on my WINDOWS XP it is in: C:\texlive\2010\texmf-dist\tex\latex\titlesec and on Linux:

This works great for sections. However, this will add an extra dot for the subsections. I ended up having something like this: 1.      Introduction 1..1 Problem Definition instead of 1.      Introduction 1.1 Problem Definition Then I would the following commands to redefine the dots

You should be able to do this with the titlesec package. For example, it has the following command: and you may add a dot after the counter simply with \titlelabel{\thetitle.\quad} My experience is that trying to change the section labels manually gives headaches.

Oops, It seems I got an additional dot in the figures. I can't use titlesec package simply because I don't know how to compile and add packages to Lyx. I have looked to some links about adding packages but for some reasons It was not working for me. I don't want to mess-up with my thesis
