document-setting-Page layout
and
tools-Preferences-Output-Latex
Can we have some clarifications?

are larger than pagesize in a proper way?
e.g. I have created a mindmap and exported it as .PNG - the image file
is rather big and when I insert
the image into my lyx document, it exceeds the paper size (A4) and lyx

but can't figure out how? Everything in Lyx seems to set the size globally.
