Can't you just add \mbox{ and }, marked as TeX, around you formula? I
agree it is not very elegant, but I do not see why it would not work.

LyX require LaTeX 2e (not the older LaTeX 2.09) and version 1995/12/01
is better, although earleir versions may work.

This may be my problem. My "/usr/local/bin/latex" file points to "virtex".
virtex has a write date of "May 14 1993". Doing a strings on that
a version number I get: "This is TeX, Version 3.141". I think I'll go
get the latest from sunfreeware and try again.

In general the upgrade from 5.2 to 6.0 was the smoothest I've experienced since
I started with RedHat 3.0.3 (Picasso). However, the TeX upgrade sucks. First,
none of the files got installed, and I had to do rpm -Uhv --force for most of
the tetex packages. And now it seems that hyphenation is totally screwed. I'm
getting words being hyphenated like this: W-hole, so-cial, C-PS. I need to go
into production very soon to produce 460 LaTeX documents but if the hyphenation
is going to behave so aberrantly I'm going to have to go back to 5.2. Is there
a way around this problem?
