inputenc is part of every LateX system. The problem is that BibTeX cannot
handle UTF characters. The error you get often appears for example when a
reference has a long - between page numbers. When you haven't used

Thanks, Uwe.

I am attaching the offending reference, which I entered by using JabRef (that

What is the difference between a long - between page numbers vs --?

It would be helpful if somebody could also check whether this reference works

JabRef, it is automatically completed (e.g. the name, the journal). It looks
to me as JabRef has some internal way of remembering this reference. I got

theorem numbering - independently please!

2009-05-04 Thread antitech

Hi,

I am a real antitech guy so I can’t do complicated things.. I’d want my
theorems numbered independently, that is, instead of [theorem 1, proposition
2, theorem 3], I’d prefer [theorem 1, proposition 1, theorem 2].

I am using 1.6 Lyx. I tried Document\Settings but I didn’t find anything
like this there (only numbering by section and chapter).

It’s such an obvious problem, I wish it had an obvious answer! Please, do
tell me it does..

Thanks, The Real Antitech

2009-05-04 Thread Rich Shepard

On Mon, 4 May 2009, tedc wrote:

Could the problem lie in the typefaces themselves?

  Yes.

Each typeface is defined by the available fonts. The font represents a
weight (normal, bold), a shape (upright, slanted, Italic, small caps), and a
point size (10, 12, 14). Not all typefaces are available in every weight,
shape, and size.

If we think of the monospaced typewriter face, and we're old enough to
remember writing with typewriters (manual or electric), it makes sense that
a typeface representing the old typewritten output would have only medium
weight because typewriters could not do bold (or Italic for which
underlining was substituted). And, because all characters occupy the same
horizontal space (the width of the type arm in the typewriter) we were
taught to put two spaces after a period to make it easier to distinguish
sentences. With proportional-spaced fonts that's no longer necessary (or
desirable as you discover when you try it in LyX).

Text overlapping table float wrap

2009-05-04 Thread Jim Rockford
Hello. I have a problem with table wraps that seems to have occurred for
other people as well. On occasion, somewhat unpredictably, the document
text will not respect the presence of a table float (wrap mode) and will
overlap the table. My understanding from reading this forum and others is
that this is primarily a problem with latex, not necessarily Lyx. There
were some posts on the Lyx forum, prior to the release of the 1.6x family,
suggesting that this problem might be fixed. As of version 1.6.2 I am still
having the problem.

I'm just wondering if this is of no surprise to the Lyx community. Should I
expect to have these problems with table and figure wraps still, as of
version 1.6.2?

Thanks,
Jim

One possibility: use the AMS Alignat environment with *four* columns and
leave the third column empty. So, using | to denote column breaks:

a | S | | b
c | T | | d

theorem numbering - independently please!

Thanks, The Real Antitech

variety of them, as well as detailed documention on how to write your own

Memoir has its problems. It's incompatible with the tocloft package. It
includes some, but not all of the tocloft package. See this:

Re: Typewriter, Bold is indistinguishable from plain Typewriter

Thanks,
Jim

Question about eqnarray environment (multiple = or symbols)

What I want is a neatly formatted set of relations like

One possibility: use the AMS Alignat environment with *four* columns and
leave the third column empty. So, using | to denote column breaks:

a | S | | b
c | T | | d

Getting aip.bst to work with Lyx

Now, when I click on Bibtex Generated Bibliography, aip is listed in the

has question marks ? at the citations in the text and no bibliography
appears. If I change the style to, say, 'plain', the citations are present
as os the bibliography list.

I am attaching aip.bst and my Lyx source file.

Thanks, Uwe.

I am attaching the offending reference, which I entered by using JabRef (that
is bibtex).
What is the difference between a long "-" between page numbers vs "--"?

It would be helpful if somebody could also check whether this reference works
in lyx by inserting it via JabRef. I noticed if I try to re-write it in
JabRef, it is automatically completed (e.g. the name, the journal). It looks
to me as JabRef has some internal way of remembering this reference. I got
the reference from the medline internet databank.

Would it help to use biblatex in this kind of errors?

theorem numbering - independently please!

Thanks, The Real Antitech

the dash probably causes problems. Either write 119--126 or just 119-126

Memoir has its problems. It's incompatible with the tocloft package. It
includes some, but not all of the tocloft package. See this:

http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg44255.html

Personally, I don't use Memoir anymore, but I SURE DO LOVE the Memoir
documentation. The first half is about how you should typeset and why, and is
a must for any self-publisher.

Are you sure the manual mentions \includeonly (as opposed to \include)?

The wiki can be fixed by everyone, click the Edit button/link.

For the manual, you can write to the documentation list or file a bug report

Re: Typewriter, Bold is indistinguishable from plain Typewriter

Thanks,
Jim

In think you need zlib devel, or something like that.

Yes. It turns out bug 5360 made this point, just not very
prominently. I added a clarification there.

I choose zlib1g and zlib1g-dev and zlibc
and was asked to accept apt-build
however I did not, since I am completely unexperienced

fortunately ./configure worked.
Will see how make and install behaves. Its running

thanks for all the help (its a very kind and patient list, I must say!)

If you open Document>LaTeX log, you will find lines telling you that the
font was not found in bold and substituted with normal weight...

The LaTeX Font Catalogue http://www.tug.dk/FontCatalogue/ lists examples
of monospaced fonts under

Click on the available fonts to see samples of supported features for

What LyX version?

Are you sure it is a problem in the formula, not the surrounding text?

You can try to find the "offending" character looking at View>Source
(check the whole document box): you should find the problematic char
highlighted.

Do you have a configured *.ui file?

What happens if you temporarily rename the ~/.lyx dir to ~/.lyx.bak, say
(assuming a Unix-like OS).

I sure do: the classical UI. It's selected in Edit->Preferences->Look &

Done this in the past to try to isolate problems; it just screws up

Wrap floats are in general not easy to handle, but this is a LateX issue. In LyX 1.6.x the wrap
float support was however be improved. For the possible tricks with wrap floats, have a look at the
EmbeddedObjects manual that you find in LyX's Help menu.
