This is a great idea but till such time it is implemented you could try
creating your own client-side filters. Most email clients like outlook express,

*try defining some LaTeX command that looks like a footnote, but acts like a

\newcounter{footmarg}

Then, if you don't want footnotes at all:

\let\footnote=\margfoot

This will not always work, I expect, but it ought to get you started.*

I'm sorry, but I didn't understand. Your propose is to insert the footnotes
with that Latex command, but, where do I write the content of the footnote?
Maybe is easier to change the place of footnotes in the template, but I dont

About the Fancyhdr package it can change the position of the page numbers.

sufficient to contain the entire algorithm... Is it possible to make LyX go to

Question about command sequences

2009-08-14 Thread Venable
Dear Lyx-list,

I am trying to use Command Sequences to come up with a simple way to
create frames in Beamer without resorting to the use of \lyxframe{} or
repeated copying-and-pasting. My goal is to use a minimal number of
keystrokes to create plain LaTeX \begin{frame}, \frametitle{} and
\end{frame} commands, so as to be able to collaborate with non-LyX
users.

I have tried using Command Sequences and have run into a couple of
problems. My approach was to create two commands:

C-[ would insert the latex code to begin the frame and create a
placeholder for the frame title:
\begin{frame} \frametitle{}

C-] would insert the latex code to end the frame:
\end{frame}

(The choice of [ and ] was arbitrary.)

I created the following Command Sequences in the
Tools-Preferences-Editing dialog box:

command-sequence ert-insert; self-insert \begin{frame}; inset-toggle;
ert-insert; self-insert \frametitle{}; inset-toggle;
This is assigned keyboard shortcut Crtl-[

and

command-sequence ert-insert; self-insert \end{frame}; inset-toggle;
This is assigned keyboard shortcut Ctrl-]

The second (end frame) works as expected. However, the first reverses
the order of the ERT boxes somehow, i.e. the resulting content is
\frametitle{} first followed by \begin{frame}.

Why is the order in which the commands appear reversed in this way?
This seems a little odd, although a simple workaround is to redefine
the sequence as

command-sequence ert-insert; self-insert \begin{frame}; inset-toggle;
ert-insert; self-insert \frametitle{}; inset-toggle;
(Again, assigned to Ctrl-[ )

That works pretty well, but there is one small complication. I was
expecting the resulting LaTex code to be simply
\begin{frame} \frametitle{}

However, initially something else is inserted (at least, visible in
the preview window):
\inputencoding{latin1}\begin{frame}\inputencoding{latin9}\foreignlanguage{english}{\frametitle{}}

Once I save the file, close and reopen, the content of the preview
window is as expected (i.e. all that extraneous stuff is gone), so
perhaps this is not a big deal. However, it leads me to think I am
doing something wrong and in any event it would be nice to have the
code right from the start.

Can anyone point out what I am doing wrong or should be doing differently?

There are a few refinements I would like to attempt eventually (adding
the begin and end frame code with just one command, having the cursor
appear in the frametitle field, having the resulting material in the
LyX document mimic more closely what you get when you import from
LaTex, etc.) and I would welcome any suggestions along these lines,
but I would like to get this basic, sufficient code right first.

Many thanks.

If you are keeping the old LaTeX version around as well, you might want
to check out Ubuntu's update-alternatives command (check the man page or
google it). I've only used it for Java, but it should be possible to
use it to make the new TeXLive install the default choice. Then run
latex --version just to confirm the newer LaTeX is being chosen, after
which try reconfiguring and restarting LyX.

If the new version is already the default choice, you may just need the
last step (reconfigure/restart LyX).

Running on a command line
   $ tex --version
you get the old version, then possibly the new TeX Live binary directory
isn't in your path.

Assuming a default custom installation (no .deb packages) of texlive 2008,
the directory of the binaries must be added to the search path.
In Ubuntu the default should be

PATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-linux:$PATH; export PATH
MANPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/doc/man:$MANPATH; export MANPATH
INFOPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/doc/info:$INFOPATH; export INFOPATH

these lines or the relevant ones in your system are added in your
.bashrc (or .profile) file in your HOME directory.

Then reconfigure LyX and try again.

I hope this is a help

This is a great idea but till such time it is implemented you could try

\newcounter{footmarg}

Inserting algorithms and codes in documents

Hi! I'm writing my thesis and now I would need to put some algorithms and codes
to my LyX document. I created a float Algorithm and I placed in it a program
listing. I see it is even possible to select many useful options, I think it is
really great and very very comfortable. There one thing I'm not able to fix...
it seems the algorithm doesn't go to the new page... One single page is not
sufficient to contain the entire algorithm... Is it possible to make LyX go to
the new page with the same algorithm?
Thanks!

\begin{frame} \frametitle{}

C-] would insert the latex code to end the frame:
\end{frame}

(The choice of [ and ] was arbitrary.)

I created the following Command Sequences in the
Tools-Preferences-Editing dialog box:

command-sequence ert-insert; self-insert \begin{frame}; inset-toggle;
ert-insert; self-insert \frametitle{}; inset-toggle;
This is assigned keyboard shortcut Crtl-[

and

command-sequence ert-insert; self-insert \end{frame}; inset-toggle;
This is assigned keyboard shortcut Ctrl-]

The second (end frame) works as expected. However, the first reverses
the order of the ERT boxes somehow, i.e. the resulting content is
\frametitle{} first followed by \begin{frame}.

Why is the order in which the commands appear reversed in this way?
This seems a little odd, although a simple workaround is to redefine
the sequence as

command-sequence ert-insert; self-insert \begin{frame}; inset-toggle;
ert-insert; self-insert \frametitle{}; inset-toggle;
(Again, assigned to Ctrl-[ )

That works pretty well, but there is one small complication. I was
expecting the resulting LaTex code to be simply
\begin{frame} \frametitle{}

However, initially something else is inserted (at least, visible in
the preview window):
\inputencoding{latin1}\begin{frame}\inputencoding{latin9}\foreignlanguage{english}{\frametitle{}}

   $ tex --version
you get the old version, then possibly the new TeX Live binary directory
isn't in your path.

Assuming a default custom installation (no .deb packages) of texlive 2008,
the directory of the binaries must be added to the search path.
In Ubuntu the default should be

PATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-linux:$PATH; export PATH
MANPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/doc/man:$MANPATH; export MANPATH
INFOPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/doc/info:$INFOPATH; export INFOPATH

these lines or the relevant ones in your system are added in your
.bashrc (or .profile) file in your HOME directory.

Then reconfigure LyX and try again.

I hope this is a help

I for one would NOT find that convenient Elo...

I read my mail (and usenetgroups) with a threaded reader that uses
the headers to group all the messages in thread order. Since I also
use filters to sort them into folders I have no need for the info
embedded in the identifier you suggest. And because it would be on the
left hand side of the subject header it would reduce the functionality
of the threaded index view of my mail client.

On the other hand if they went with appending it to the righthand end

without looking into the code, creating tikz->png convertor wont help?

The only way I know to manage this problem works with an odd number

Any hints to solve this problem? (I bet that it's simple, but I don't

I suggest that you read the user manual. Specifically, the "Embedded

Re: About the position of footnotes and page numbers

2009-08-14 Thread Antonio Díaz
 Hi all:

*try defining some LaTeX command that looks like a footnote, but acts like a
margin note. Very roughly:

\newcounter{footmarg}
\newcommand{\margfoot}[1]{\**refstepcounter{footmarg}\**marginpar{\arabic{footmarg}.
#1}}

Maybe is easier to change the place of footnotes in the template, but I dont
know how can I do that.

About the Fancyhdr package it can change the position of the page numbers.

Inserting algorithms and codes in documents

2009-08-14 Thread Luca Carlon
Thanks!

\begin{frame} \frametitle{}

C-] would insert the latex code to end the frame:
\end{frame}

(The choice of [ and ] was arbitrary.)

I created the following Command Sequences in the
Tools-Preferences-Editing dialog box:

command-sequence ert-insert; self-insert \begin{frame}; inset-toggle;
ert-insert; self-insert \frametitle{}; inset-toggle;
This is assigned keyboard shortcut Crtl-[

and

command-sequence ert-insert; self-insert \end{frame}; inset-toggle;
This is assigned keyboard shortcut Ctrl-]

The second (end frame) works as expected. However, the first reverses
the order of the ERT boxes somehow, i.e. the resulting content is
\frametitle{} first followed by \begin{frame}.

Why is the order in which the commands appear reversed in this way?
This seems a little odd, although a simple workaround is to redefine
the sequence as

command-sequence ert-insert; self-insert \begin{frame}; inset-toggle;
ert-insert; self-insert \frametitle{}; inset-toggle;
(Again, assigned to Ctrl-[ )

That works pretty well, but there is one small complication. I was
expecting the resulting LaTex code to be simply
\begin{frame} \frametitle{}

However, initially something else is inserted (at least, visible in
the preview window):
\inputencoding{latin1}\begin{frame}\inputencoding{latin9}\foreignlanguage{english}{\frametitle{}}

Undo

Hello there,
I am new to Lyx and have a question about the undo command (cmd-z on a mac).
When I press cmd-z in Lyx, all actions executed since opening the file are
being undone, not just the last action. How can I undo only the last action?

Thanks so much,

Changing Latex installation used in Lyx

2009-08-14 Thread Antonio Rieser
Hi,

I'm using Lyx 1.6.3, built from source, on Ubuntu 8.04. I recently
installed a new version of latex (texlive) in a different place from
where the old one was, but I can't figure out how to get Lyx to
recognize it. All of the packages it lists in Preferences->TeX
Configuration are from the old installation, and it won't compile when
I use packages from the new configuration.

Thanks in advance for your help.

   $> tex --version
you get the old version, then possibly the new TeX Live binary directory
isn't in your path.

Assuming a default custom installation (no .deb packages) of texlive 2008,
the directory of the binaries must be added to the search path.
In Ubuntu the default should be

PATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-linux:$PATH; export PATH
MANPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/doc/man:$MANPATH; export MANPATH
INFOPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/doc/info:$INFOPATH; export INFOPATH

these lines or the relevant ones in your system are added in your
.bashrc (or .profile) file in your HOME directory.

Then reconfigure LyX and try again.

I hope this is a help

There is a preference setting ->Look ->User Interface ->Maximum
last files. However, due to bug http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/5980 this
was ignored and there were always 9 last files. But, this is already
fixed for 1.6.4. Now you can go up to 20. Is that enough ?

I for one would NOT find that convenient Elo...

I read my mail (and usenetgroups) with a threaded reader that uses
the headers to group all the messages in thread order. Since I also
use filters to sort them into folders I have no need for the info
embedded in the identifier you suggest. And because it would be on the
left hand side of the subject header it would reduce the functionality
of the threaded index view of my mail client.

=> To illustrate what I mean, I've included a snippage of what an 80
=> column threaded index view of my lyx folder looks like (see below)
=> -> Note: that view includes an example of a modified subject that was

=> -> reading...

On the other hand if they went with appending it to the righthand end
of the subject, so that this topic would show up as:
"Suggestion [Lyx-Users]" rather than as "[Lyx-Users] Suggestion",
then it wouldn't bother me at all... But you might miss it if the
subject was too long... Guess there is no way to keep us both happy.
