Marcelo Acuña schrieb: If I choose Times Roman for roman font, what font I must to choose for sans serif font If I want to obtain an aesthetically coherent aspect? Times is a font designed for newspapers (New York Times). Its glyphs are therefore thinner with less space between them. When you want to write a book, I could therefore not recommend Times as font. To get aesthetically coherent aspect for all 3 font types, the best is to use the corresponding Latin Modern font. The same for Bookman font. It depends on your taste what is aesthetically coherent. Just play a bit with the available fonts. regards Uwe

Graphical bibtex-editors
Hello, I'm working with Lyx 1.6.5 on Win XP. I'll start to write a new book with lyx soon. Until now I used JabRef as bibtex-editor. In the lyx-wiki I found some other editors like Synapsen or BibTexMng, but there are no experiences on these editors in the wiki. Has someone experiences with an bibtex-editor, that is much better to use than JabRef? Or are there no major differences? -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen Matthias Schmidt mailto:gm_schm...@yahoo.de Diese Nachricht ist mit Norton Internet Security geprüft
RE: Graphical bibtex-editors
Hi Matthais, I've spent a really long time looking for a good BibTeX editor on Windows and, I'm sorry to say, I haven't really found one. In my opinion, the very best BibTeX editor is BibDesk (Mac OS X only) followed by Pybiolographer (Linux only). JabRef takes a rather distant third place, which is unfortunate, since it is the only truly cross-platform editor (I greatly dislike Java and it makes me biased). With that said, there are other alternatives on Windows. Two option spring to mind immediately and both work quite well with LyX. The first program is an open source Firefox add-on called Zotero (http://www.zotero.org/). Zotero works very much JabRef in that it allows you to manage a library of citations, but it has the additional advantage in that it lives in the browser. When you search sites such as PubMed, Amazon and others, it includes a helpful icon to download the citation information from the webpage. It is also possible to import import PubMed searches and collections of citations (for example, I recently was able to download Neil Gaiman's complete bibliography from Wikipedia for a small book project that I am working on). Though I was skeptical of how useful the whole research assistant in the browser would be, I've found it is actually very handy. So much so, that nearly all of my citation management now happens in Zotero (with heavy duty backup provided by Mendeley, described below). Zotero can be directly used with LyX through the LyX plugin (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/56806). I've been testing it for a few weeks now, and it seems to work pretty well. But I haven't done anything real with it yet. (My preferred solution is to generate a clean BibTeX file using Mendeley.) There are other advantages of Zotero as well. For starters, it allows you to use the same citation library with Microsoft Office/OpenOffice documents via a plug-in. This is something that is very important to me as most of my colleagues still continue to use Microsoft products. Additionally, it has an associated online service which can sync your reference library to multiple computers. While I've long done this with version control, the Zotero sync happens completely in the background and is more or less seamless. The second option is a program called Mendeley (http://www.mendeley.com/). Whereas the primary emphasis of Zotero is online research and citation management, you might think of Mendeley as a personal librarian for your reference collection. For this reason, it bills itself as iTunes for reference papers. I use Mendeley to keep my PDF library organized and synced across my two laptops, work desktop and home desktop computers. The entire collection is indexed and searchable. It also has a wickedly cool in-text search that is very handy. However, by far the best feature of Mendeley is its ability to create highly readable BibTeX code. You can select citations to export, or you can have it automatically generate a BibTeX file for you. Because the code is clean, I've had no trouble using it with either LaTeX or LyX. Another very handy features is that it can sync its database with the Zotero database. This means that you can use Zotero to acquire citations and then have that information incorporated automatically into your Mendeley database as well. It's pretty slick. (As an aside, I've heard that sometimes getting the Mendeley sync to work on Windows can be difficult. I personally haven't had any trouble.) Mendeley also includes a Microsoft Word/OpenOffice plugin that works more or less identically to that of Zotero. The biggest downside, of course, is that neither program is a true BibTeX editor. But I've been very happy with the BibTeX created by Mendeley and Lyz makes it very easy to use Zotero directly from LyX. Thus, I've found that this doesn't concern me nearly as much as I thought it might. Good luck as you try out different programs. And if you find something that is better than JabRef, please let me know. I would love to find a good BibTeX editor on the Windows platform. Cheers, Rob Oakes
Freeze followed by St9bad_alloc
I have been having problems with a report I'm working on currently. When I'm editing one of the files in the report, LyX freezes, and after several minutes it crashes with a cryptic error message St9bad_alloc. This occurs most frequently when I'm doing something with a figure float. The most recent occurrence appeared to originate when I cut a figure float from one child document and pasted it into another. The problem appears to originate most commonly when I change the paragraph settings from the default left alignment to center. It also happens much more commonly when I'm using US Letter page size than when using A4. On the current document it happened from the first time when I changed page size from A4 to Letter. I've found I can usually fix the problem once I identify which float is causing the error by simply opening the float and making a change in the settings. Apparently any change works. The report I'm working on is currently a master document with six child documents, using Report(komascript) class. I changed from a single document to make it easier to locate the float causing this problem. I'm using LyX 1.6.4 running on 64-bit Gentoo Linux with texlive-2008-r4. Has anyone else run across this problem? -- .. Les Denham

My documents start as follows \documentclass[draft,approved]{danrep} \title{This is a test report title that I will make quite long.} \repnum{10-00} \author{Philip Stubbs} \date{2010-01-12} \begin{document} \section{Introduction} Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Suspendisse justo nisi, sagittis pharetra sagittis id, I now would like to go the next step, and leave vim and use LyX as my editor. I started looking at the *.layout files to see what I need to do. What I cant seem to work out is how to place the \title etc before the \begin{document} Any suggestions would be welcome. I don't really want to start chopping about the class file at this stage. -- Philip Stubbs

-- .. Les Denham

Times is a font designed for newspapers (New York Times). Its glyphs are therefore thinner with less space between them. When you want to write a book, I could therefore not recommend Times as font. To get "aesthetically coherent aspect" for all 3 font types, the best is to use the corresponding Latin Modern font.

Though I was skeptical of how useful the whole "research assistant in the browser" would be, I've found it is actually very handy. For this reason, it bills itself as "iTunes for reference papers".
When I'm editing one of the files in the report, LyX freezes, and after several minutes it crashes with a cryptic error message "St9bad_alloc". -- .. Les Denham

This suggests to me an infinite loop somewhere that keeps consuming memory until there's none left, which is when you get a memory allocation error. I think this is really just std::bad_alloc in disguise. That doesn't really tell us what the problem is, though, unfortunately. If you could run under a debugger, we might get more info. rh

I have been developing my class file for some time. It is more recently that I decided to try and start using LyX. When I first started using LaTeX, the hacking made the boring job of writing reports more fun. Now I am more inclined to want to just do the report, so I need to streamline the process, but there is no way I could cope with going back to Word. :-) Anyhow, since I can't be bothered to wait for version 2.0, I spent a quick half hour redoing my class file. It looks like I am 95% there, so will be able to start work on my LyX layout soon. Thanks for the help. -- Philip Stubbs
