 Try compiling without adding anything to the preamble. To note simply
 states that these packages should be installed on your system. was is
 obviously installed, and it consists of the style files fixmath,
 gensymb, etc. as you have observed. One of these must be needed by the
 Math manual. But in fact you should not need to edit anything within
 that file in order to get it to compile. (if you do get compile errors,
 please report them of course!)

Thanks for fast reply!

As i said, I am new to the whole latex/lyx thing. Therefore I have some
problems when I follow the instructions here:

I can choose the layout songbook and then choose title, author, song,
verse, chorus But I cant seem do get the \Ch / \Chord to work, it
doesnt show up in the list when i type \C. And I get some errors when i try
to view in pdf, but the html view is fine.

It looks like you do not have a Greek font
(TeX font in LGR font encoding) matching the main document font.

 You might try inserting a different font spec;

These are two different Unicode characters
with different replacements:

maybe you used the (correct) one in previous attempts
(on my Debian system with german xkbmap, I get the micro sign by pressing
AltGr-M).

Many huge pictures - Memory problems?

Dear LyX-Community,

I'm finalising a textbook with about 120 figures, half of them screenshots.
The publisher told me to deliver the screenshots with better resolutions.
But now my book does not compile any more and LyX generates wired errors I
can't track:

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

[000-sdl-buch is the name of my master file]


My assumption is that there is a memory problem:

1. I can compile every part of the book as long as I'm not compiling the
whole book at once.
2. I can compile the whole book without problems in draft modus e.g. without
integrating the pictures
3. To compile just a part but to tell LyX it should include counter and
references results in the same error.

I have not idea how to proceed: If I compile the book in two independent
parts what about the int-text references, bibliography and other automatic
generated lists (table of contents, table of figures etc.)?

Could a new organisation of the files helpful? (At the moment I have one
master file with 53 subfiles.)

Another possibility I'm thinking of are the pictures itself. In my first
version the pictures had about 80 to 300 kB. After shooting the screenshots
again half of them have now 200 kB to 700 kB (still bad resolution but maybe
sufficient?) the other half is between 2 to 4 MB. All the pictures are in
PNGs. Perhaps it would help to size the biggest pictures a little bit down?
But here the problem is: To some of the websites I have no access anymore
and all the pictures have overlaid graphics in it (to highlight some part of
the screenshot).  

I'm at a loss and don't know how to proceed. Any hint would be *very*
appreciated...

Dear LyX-Community,

I'm finalising a textbook with about 120 figures, half of them screenshots.
The publisher told me to deliver the screenshots with better resolutions.
But now my book does not compile any more and LyX generates wired errors I
can't track:

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

[000-sdl-buch is the name of my master file]


My assumption is that there is a memory problem:

1. I can compile every part of the book as long as I'm not compiling the
whole book at once.
2. I can compile the whole book without problems in draft modus e.g. without
integrating the pictures
3. To compile just a part but to tell LyX it should include counter and
references results in the same error.

I have not idea how to proceed: If I compile the book in two independent
parts what about the int-text references, bibliography and other automatic
generated lists (table of contents, table of figures etc.)?

Could a new organisation of the files helpful? (At the moment I have one
master file with 53 subfiles.)

Another possibility I'm thinking of are the pictures itself. In my first
version the pictures had about 80 to 300 kB. After shooting the screenshots
again half of them have now 200 kB to 700 kB (still bad resolution but maybe
sufficient?) the other half is between 2 to 4 MB. All the pictures are in
PNGs. Perhaps it would help to size the biggest pictures a little bit down?
But here the problem is: To some of the websites I have no access anymore
and all the pictures have overlaid graphics in it (to highlight some part of
the screenshot).  

I'm at a loss and don't know how to proceed. Any hint would be *very*
appreciated...

Fwd: Songbook?

Thanks for fast reply!

As i said, I am new to the whole latex/lyx thing. Therefore I have some
problems when I follow the instructions here:

I can choose the layout "songbook" and then choose title, author, song,
verse, chorus But I cant seem do get the "\Ch / \Chord" to work, it
doesnt show up in the list when i type \C. And I get some errors when i try
to view in pdf, but the html view is fine.

"lgrenc.dfu" [2] and "textgreek.sty" [3] to the local  
"/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/base/" directory, ran "sudo  
texhash afterwords" and went ahead to run pure LaTeX code (through  
TeXmaker):

It looks like you do not have a Greek font
(TeX font in LGR font encoding) matching the main document font.

These are two different Unicode characters
with different replacements:

0x00b5 "\\textmu" "textcomp" "force" # µ MICRO SIGN
0x03bc "\\textgreek{m}"   "textgreek" "" # GREEK SMALL LETTER MU

maybe you used the (correct) one in previous attempts
(on my Debian system with german xkbmap, I get the micro sign by pressing
AltGr-M).

This depends on your "TeX encoding" setting. With the default value,
("language default") this should not matter (as then Greek small letter mu
is replaced). Only with Document>Settings>Language>encoding: Unicode (utf8)
you will see this special problem.

However, using a cursive math $\mu$ for the unit prefix Micro (as in µm)
is *wrong*. Use the MICRO SIGN character instead (in text and math).
Make sure the textcomp package is loaded, otherwise you may end up with a
kursive math mu even in this case, as the inputenc file for latin1 is buggy.

I have to admit, I'm a bit lost here. In the exported source, all the
environments are generated with:

\begin{lyxlist}{00.00.}

There don't seem to be any width specifiers hard-coded into the definition
above, so there's nothing to change for the default label width. How is
that set?

There's also the item labels themselves, which are basically:

\item [{Label goes here}]

...but I don't see what part of the lyxlist definition generates that.
Where do I look for that?

I'm not completely new to LaTeX and TeX, but it's been about 8 years since
I've had to delve into TeX internals to do this sort of stuff, so I would
appreciate some pointers on this.
