Re: [lyx-users] Where to find the 'broadway' stuff.

 I assume it needs LaTeX support that it isn't finding on my system.
 However, neither a CTAN search nor a Web search turns up anything
 relevant.

 Any hints as to what I'm missing and where to find it?

Like you are told in Help/Latex Configuration the class file "must be
installed from the tex/ subdirectory of LyX source distribution". The
exact location should be lyx-1.0.2/lib/tex/broadway.cls.

It's the same problem we had with screenshots: user manuals, system
manuals, etc, mostly over 100 pages (yes, we kicked Word and do them now
with LyX/LaTeX and some self-written tools). The resulting PS files were
so big that we almost canceled the whole thing. I haven't found any tool
which creates LZW compressed PS/EPS files, but found a way to make them ~
5 x smaller using the netpbm programs to create rle encoded eps files (so
one 170 pages PS manual gets from e.g. ~ 120MB to 52MB, it still is the
upper pain limit) (btw. I use PNG instead of GIF: smaller/better/license
free):

coloured eps:

  giftopnm in.gif | pnmtops -scale 1 -dpi 600 -noturn -rle  out.eps

greyscale eps:

  giftopnm in.gif | ppmtopgm | pnmtops -noturn -rle  out.eps

You cold authomate these steps with a shell script. The 'scale' and 'dpi'
parameters aren't really necessary, but give me the best result. The
greyscale eps files are the smallest.

rle encoded eps files can also be created with xv, but xv is shareware and
pnmtops compresses better. The printing of rle encoded eps graphics is
also a bit slower, because the decompression routine, written in PS, is
inside the eps file.

Hope it helps.

PS
From PS files we create with ps2pdf (uses ghostscript) PDF files, which
then again are ~ 4-5 x bigger than PS. I still haven't found a solution
for this yet (using one own PS font seems to make this so extreme), but
maybe someone among you readers of this knows it...

Small glitch in View dvi?

If I create a simple document (say, with one line: "This is the first

If I then add more text (say, "This is the next sentence.") and select View

exact location should be lyx-1.0.2/lib/tex/broadway.cls.

List of entries from BibTeX files

1999-05-05 Thread Remy Kolessar

Hi!

I just compiled v. 1.0.2 as smoothly as usual :o)) , but I couldn't
figure out how to get the new feature for BibTeX files to work: how can
I get the entry list?

I tried with one of my .bib files as usual but couldn't see any entry
when I tried to insert a citation. What did I miss?

Thanks,

I use PNG instead of GIF: smaller/better/license
free):

coloured eps:

  giftopnm in.gif | pnmtops -scale 1 -dpi 600 -noturn -rle > out.eps

greyscale eps:

  giftopnm in.gif | ppmtopgm | pnmtops -noturn -rle > out.eps

You cold authomate these steps with a shell script. The 'scale' and 'dpi'
parameters aren't really necessary, but give me the best result. The
greyscale eps files are the smallest.

rle encoded eps files can also be created with xv, but xv is shareware and
pnmtops compresses better. The printing of rle encoded eps graphics is
also a bit slower, because the decompression routine, written in PS, is
inside the eps file.

Hope it helps.
Victor

PS
>From PS files we create with ps2pdf (uses ghostscript) PDF files, which
then again are ~ 4-5 x bigger than PS. I still haven't found a solution
for this yet (using one own PS font seems to make this so extreme), but
maybe someone among you readers of this knows it...

Have you tried to mark the text in the margin-box and change the
justification via Layout/Paragraphformat (the second option in the
Layout-Menu) to left-justified? Unfortunately you have to do it for all
your
margin-boxes. But it works.

Small glitch in View dvi?

1999-05-05 Thread David Aronstein

I installed lyx 1.0.2 this morning and I wonder if there is a small
glitch in the View dvi command?

If I create a simple document (say, with one line: "This is the first
sentence.") and select View dvi, then the document looks fine.

If I then add more text (say, "This is the next sentence.") and select View
dvi, the new text does not appear. It seems that the .dvi file is not being
updated?

I am running on an Intel machine, with RedHat 5.2.
Before today, I had used lyx 1.0.1 and did not notice this problem.

Any ideas what might be happening?

Table/Figure numbering

1999-05-05 Thread Leonid Belostotski

Hello,

It was probably discussed somewhere but I was not able to find it.

For my thesis, each figure/table has to be numbered in the following
fashion: Y-X, where Y is the chapter number and X is the figure number in
the chapter. I need to be able to cross-reference to the table/figure and
the list of figures/tables has to follow the same format.
Is there a way of doing it?

Thank you

  I was writing a message to report the same problem!
I am running on a sparc using solaris 2.6.
When I click update dvi I see the message, Running Latex and a second
later it says Done, but

no Latex run 1 and Latex run 2 messages like in 1.0.1.
When I look at the dvi file, no changes appear.
I reinstalled 1.0.1 and the problem was gone.

My text is "justified" on both sides by default.
(i.e., the text is spaced so that each full line
takes the same amount of space, like the text I
am writing right now ).

In the margin I get the same behavior, but
that is not what I want ...
(what I want the margin to be left
justified, like this paragraph..., with
no extra space between words/characters)

Try running ``lyx -dbg'' with a bit pattern number.

The bits are:

INFO   = (1),// 1
INIT   = (1 << 1),   // 2
KEY= (1 << 2),   // 4
TOOLBAR= (1 << 3),   // 8
LEX_PARSER = (1 << 4),   // 16
LYXRC  = (1 << 5),   // 32
KBMAP  = (1 << 6),   // 64
LATEX  = (1 << 7),   // 128
MATHED = (1 << 8),   // 256
FONT   = (1 << 9),   // 512
TCLASS = (1 << 10),  // 1024
LYXVC  = (1 << 11),  // 2048
ROFF   = (1 << 12),  // 4096
LYXSERVER  = (1 << 13),  // 8192

Executing ``lyx -dbg 65535'' is probably too much.

  I run lyx -dbg 128 for latex debugging. The first time I run view dvi,

latex runs fine. Then I
make some change, click update dvi and this is what debugging tells me,

makeLaTeXFile...
  Validating buffer...
Paragraph: 2971688
LyX needs the following commands when LaTeXing:
* Packages:
* Macros:
\providecommand{\LyX}{L\kern-.1667em\lower.25em\hbox{Y}\kern-.125emX\@}

* Textclass stuff:
* done.
  Buffer validation done.

I tried it, and at first didn't think it was working, but then I realized
you don't see anything at all until you click the down arrow in the dialog
box. (The first entry isn't offered as a candidate, so the dialog box is
empty when it comes up.)

Also, I don't know what you mean by "tried ... as usual", but just in
case: make sure you've got your .bib listed as the "database" in the
BibTeX references area at the end of your document, and have your
BIBINPUTS & BSTINPUTS defined as needed.

Sorry if I'm not telling you anything you didn't already know...

p.s. -- If any developers are reading, it would be nice to have it display
a longer list when you do click the arrow. I only see 4 in the scrolling
area, and there must be thousands to choose from in my .bib file.

1999-05-05 Thread Rod Pinna

Hello all,

Just another data point...I'm running tetex on debian slink i486, and have
just compiled lyx 1.0.2. On a reasonably complex latex document (3 passes
through lates, 1 pass through bibtes, and some hand latex code), I *have
not* observed the bug. Using view dvi, changing the document and the using
both update or view dvi again shows the changes.

Changes have include adding and deleting text, and adding and deleting a
bibtex reference. The latter was done using \citep{blah}, with natbib.

Also, I'm viewing the document using Xdvi.

Rod Pinna
