No, it does nothing.
It should really be removed...and reimplemented as
LyX require LaTeX 2e (not the older LaTeX 2.09) and version 1995/12/01
is better, although earleir versions may work.

This may be my problem. My "/usr/local/bin/latex" file points to "virtex".
virtex has a write date of "May 14 1993". Doing a strings on that
a version number I get:
In general the upgrade from 5.2 to 6.0 was the smoothest I've experienced since
I started with RedHat 3.0.3 (Picasso). However, the TeX upgrade sucks. First,
none of the files got installed, and I had to do rpm -Uhv --force for most of
the tetex packages. And now it seems that hyphenation is
