Yes, sure, it makes the document to look better on Acrobat, but if your
dvips has configured to use same resolution as printer, it should have
no effect on printing quality.

 - use pstopdf (from xpdf) instead of ps2pdf; read the man pages for both!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think xpdf comes with pstopdf; xpdf is
pdf reader, not ps. It comes only with pdftops, which makes better quality
ps files than pdf2ps (from ghostscript) but doesn't work on almost every
file like pdf2ps.

Well, it looks the same as in GV and LyX on my linuxbox,
 but that isn't to good.

Does it not look good with GV? How then? Check out that GV has
antialiasing turned on from menu.

How many colors/bits per pixel you are using? Check out in Linux by
command
xdpyinfo |grep depth
If it is only 256 colors (depth 8) or less, maybe you have run out
of colors and Gv can't allocate them for doing antialiasing. Try closing
other applications and using colorless "themes" with your window manager
and see out if GV displays then better quality.

And check out that it really is Gv, not Ghostview, from File/Copyright.
(it should be unless you're using ancient Linux distribution).

If it looks good with Gv but not with Acrobat Reader (but works anyway),
don't worry. Acrobat Reader is so simple program that it doesn't support
antialiasing except for some fonts, so your pdf might look bad with
Reader.

excactly what I mean, but this is quite close I hope). What
I managed to do was to change the "font-zoom" from 150 to
160 which makes it look really good. Maybe this has
 something to do whit it?

This has _absolutely_ no effect on produced postscript or pdf file, it
effects only how LyX displays the file on screen.

  Does it print it correctly?

No, what comes out is a very well typesett "text" where
each character is representeed by a filled square of black.

  - if not, it's acrobat reader problem

It looks like this one, but what do I do about it?

Does the Reader print other pdf files correctly? If yes, it's something
strange. Maybe reinstalling Reader or upgrading would help.
  download it from www.adobe.com.

You could also check that (if it's windows) the printer drivers are
configured correctly for the printer you are using, and that the printer
is in "normal" mode, whatever it is.

How do I format the TOC?

2000-11-29 Thread Nick Bogan

I've been using LyX long enough so that I can't excuse my ignorance due
to newbie status. I'm trying to format my (math) master's thesis, and
am running into problems.
- I don't know how to add dotted lines to the Table of Contents.
- I don't know how to modify page numbering (location and scheme).
What file(s) do I edit for these?

I've wasted quite a bit of time trying to use LaTeX directly to do this,
based on LaTeX files tailored for my university's format requirements by
someone else. I've exported my thesis as LaTeX and pasted the
appropriate sections into the appropriate chapter files. In the
resulting dvi, the Table of Contents and the page numbers are correct,
but all my notes, remarks, definitions, etc. are italicized, instead of
just the theorems.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to make either of these methods
work, please send your reply to my e-mail address. Thanks in advance
for the help!

Attached you will find the *.log-, *.lyx and LaTexConfig.lyx-files.
Sometimes it works, when I change the "float placement" to "top" or
"here".
But thats not very usefull and also it is not reproducible.

Do I have to add something to the LaTex-Preface or is it just a simple
mistake I made?
Do I have to check and fix the Tex-code by hand and if that's necessary,
is this very common and does such problems happen very often?

I'm using klyx 0.10.0 with the SuSE-Linux-Distribution 6.3.

Thanks in advance.

 Hi all,

 1) I downloaded the .tar.gz-file, .configured, maked and started it with src/lyx
 Then the following messages came:

LyX: Unknown LyX function `table-insert' [around line 131 of file
 ~/Software/lyx-1.1.6pre2/lib/bind/de_menus.bind]

That's because the lyxrc format has changed.

 Lyx started nevertheless.

 2) Then I opened an old document from 1.1.5

 The messages were

... (postscript messages) ...

Yet, the document was opened and displayed correctly

 3) I tried the PDF-Export:
The fonts on the screen with acrobat reader were ugly. Looked like bitmap fonts.
 Can that be changed?

YES!!

\usepackage{ae}

in the preamble gives you "almost European", an outline version of Computer Modern.
(I find it less aestetic than CM, but in acroread it looks better)

Alternatively, use any of the other font packages like palatino.sty,
times.sty, bookman.sty, newcent.sty, ... most of them are outline IIRC.

You could also check that (if it's windows) the printer drivers are
configured correctly for the printer you are using, and that the printer
is in "normal" mode, whatever it is.

menues.bind

i can start preferences, doing nothing, saving and restarting
lyx is the same: no shortcuts anyway.

This is wrong. It should be emacs.bind, cua.bind or whatever you prefer.
menus.bind is most definitely wrong. Maybe these files should be moved to ui/
rather than bind/ ?

ok. that's it. but the problem is, that lyx 1.1.6 starts with

Then try out the patch below. You'll find it illuminating.

Run "lyx -dbg 2" and ask why menus.bind, math.bind are read by lyxrc. Also
ask why the default cua.bind isn't set to the bind_file.

Latex errors concerning floats and pictures

2000-11-29 Thread A. D.

Hi

In advance I have to say, that I'm new to lyx and a latex dummy. I just
checked the possibilities of klyx and I was very impressed on the speed
and the layout.
After some writing I added floats and pictures. Everything was fine
until I added more floats and pictures: Suddenly a number of errors
occured like:

1. ! LaTeX Error: Too many unprocessed floats.
l.174 {
\centering \resizebox*{!}{4in}{\includegraphics{murks2.eps}} \par}
You've lost some text. Try typing return to proceed.
If that doesn't work, type X return to quit.

2. ! Undefined control sequence.
\@xfloat ...@fltovf \fi \global \setbox \@currbox
\color@vbox \normalcolor \...
l.174 {
\centering \resizebox*{!}{4in}{\includegraphics{murks2.eps}} \par}
The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

3. ! Missing number, treated as zero.
to be read again
\color@vbox
l.174 {
\centering \resizebox*{!}{4in}{\includegraphics{murks2.eps}} \par}
A number should have been here; I inserted `0'.
(If you can't figure out why I needed to see a number,
look up `weird error' in the index to The TeXbook.)

That's because the lyxrc format has changed.

 Lyx started nevertheless.

 2) Then I opened an old document from 1.1.5

 The messages were

... (postscript messages) ...

Yet, the document was opened and displayed correctly

 3) I tried the PDF-Export:
The fonts on the screen with acrobat reader were ugly. Looked like bitmap fonts.
 Can that be changed?

YES!!

\usepackage{ae}

in the preamble gives you "almost European", an outline version of Computer Modern.
(I find it less aestetic than CM, but in acroread it looks better)

Alternatively, use any of the other font packages like palatino.sty,
times.sty, bookman.sty, newcent.sty, ... most of them are outline IIRC.

 Bye,

Yes, sure, it makes the document to look better on Acrobat, but if your
dvips has configured to use same resolution as printer, it should have
no effect on printing quality.

> - use pstopdf (from xpdf) instead of ps2pdf; read the man pages for both!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think xpdf comes with pstopdf; xpdf is
pdf reader, not ps. It comes only with pdftops, which makes better quality
ps files than pdf2ps (from ghostscript) but doesn't work on almost every
file like pdf2ps.

Acrobat Reader is so simple program that it doesn't support
antialiasing except for some fonts, so your pdf might look bad with
Reader.

This has _absolutely_ no effect on produced postscript or pdf file, it
effects only how LyX displays the file on screen.

Does the Reader print other pdf files correctly? If yes, it's something
strange. Maybe reinstalling Reader or upgrading would help.

You could also check that (if it's windows) the printer drivers are
configured correctly for the printer you are using, and that the printer
is in "normal" mode, whatever it is.

You have multiple citations in one citation inset or very, very long keys???

Fixed in 1.1.6pre2. As with all pre distributions, back up your documents
first. Not that it should crash!

Conversion utils?

2000-11-29 Thread Nabil Hathout

Hello

The problem you noticed in latex2rtf comes from the fact that this
program only translates entire latex files (the file name must be
given in the command line). It cannot be invoqued in a pipe or with a
redirection of the latex file to the standard input.

Hi! I've got the same problem with the LANG=de_DE, etc. After updating from
SuSE6.2 to 7.0. The "old" system was german. After updating AND using my old
config. LyX talks in english to me and I am afraid NOBODY has an answer on
this.

I tried to configure all the language variable : LANGUAGE, LC_LANG ...
LC_ALL, nothing works, it talks english...

It's very surprising, because at home i have the same suse 6.2 installed
on a desktop computer, and lyx talks french... so i have check this
config to do the same on the laptop.

Hi,

I don´t have any problems using lyx with german language.
You may try to use the command
rpm -ql lyx | grep locale
to find if the messages are installed. There should be a line like
/usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/lyx.mo (for german)
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/lyx.mo (for french)

lyx 1.1.6pre2 shortcuts

2000-11-29 Thread Herbert Voss

when i start lyx without any existing ~/.lyx/preferences
i have the shortcuts displayed and i can use them with
the keyboard. if i change any of the options in the
preferences, close lyx and restart, the displayed shortcuts
are gone and i can't use the keybord-shortcuts, too.
deleting the preferences-file and restarting lyx
gives the old situation with the displayed shortcuts
and working keyboard-shortcuts.

This is wrong. It should be emacs.bind, cua.bind or whatever you prefer.
menus.bind is most definitely wrong. Maybe these files should be moved to ui/
rather than bind/ ?

ok. that's it. but the problem is, that lyx 1.1.6 starts with
this option (menue.bind) by default, if no preferences exists.

Hmm... change this to either cua.bind or emacs.bind.

Then try out the patch below. You'll find it illuminating.

Run "lyx -dbg 2" and ask why menus.bind, math.bind are read by lyxrc. Also
ask why the default cua.bind isn't set to the bind_file.

Latex errors concerning floats and pictures

2000-11-29 Thread A. D.

Hi

In advance I have to say, that I'm new to lyx and a latex dummy. I just
checked the possibilities of klyx and I was very impressed on the speed
and the layout.
After some writing I added floats and pictures. Everything was fine
until I added more floats and pictures: Suddenly a number of errors
occured like:

1. ! LaTeX Error: Too many unprocessed floats.
l.174 {
\centering \resizebox*{!}{4in}{\includegraphics{murks2.eps}} \par}
You've lost some text. Try typingto proceed.
If that doesn't work, type X to quit.

2. ! Undefined control sequence.
\@xfloat ...@fltovf \fi \global \setbox \@currbox
\color@vbox \normalcolor \...
l.174 {
\centering \resizebox*{!}{4in}{\includegraphics{murks2.eps}} \par}

\color@vbox
l.174 {
\centering \resizebox*{!}{4in}{\includegraphics{murks2.eps}} \par}
A number should have been here; I inserted `0'.
(If you can't figure out why I needed to see a number,
look up `weird error' in the index to The TeXbook.)

Andi

therefore use package tocloft (tocloft also needs by itself stdclsdv),
which should be part of your standard tex-installation.

usepackage{fancyhdr} and than for example

\fancyfoot[CE,CO]{\small $\sim$voss/Nassi-Demo.lyx\hfill\thepage}

with a left formatted text and rightformatted pagenumber.
CE: center,even pages
CO: center, odd pages

also have a look at

That's because the lyxrc format has changed.

YES!!

\usepackage{ae}

in the preamble gives you "almost European", an outline version of Computer Modern.
(I find it less aestetic than CM, but in acroread it looks better)

Alternatively, use any of the other font packages like palatino.sty,
times.sty, bookman.sty, newcent.sty, ... most of them are outline IIRC.
