1.1.6-pre3 and wv
Nice to see Word import in 1.1.6-pre3 - I never use Word myself, but people insist on sending me files in .doc format. However, I'm having trouble getting it to work. Re: 1.1.6pre3 now?
Chris, The way to do this is to recompile the new lyx under a different name. Get the sources (lyx-1.1.6pre3.tar.gz), untar them. There are two configure switches that help you. One is --with-lyxname, which sets the name for various directories and files (but not the main executable) to something other than 'lyx'. The other is --prefix, which sets the location where everything is installed. You can thus install things in a temporary place, not /usr/local or /usr. What I would do is not install the files to /usr/local, but rather do something like: configure --with-lyxname=lyx-1.1.6pre3 --prefix=~/tmp/lyx-1.1.6pre3 +any other switches you like to add. The --with-lyxname option is useful because then the default ~/.lyx directory name is actually ~/.lyx-1.1.6pre3 (assuming the example above) and thus your lyxrc will not be overwritten. You then run the program from ~/tmp/lyx-1.1.6pre3/bin/lyx (set an alias for that). Note that you can test the program without 'installing' it. Configure --with-lyxname (again to preserve ~/.lyx), and compile with just 'make' (and not 'make install' if you've been using that). Then you can run the exectuable from [wherever the sources are]/src/lyx A final word of caution - if you plan on using tabulars, the file format is being changed right now, so lyx-1.1.6 may not read tabulars written by lyx-1.1.6pre*. I think all versions can import old-style (1.1) tables. HTH, Lior. On Tue, 9 Jan 2001, Chris Schulbert wrote: Hi! As it seems, many people use 1.1.6pre3 yet. Re: RedHat 7.0, lyx rpm, new user
Hello, Wai-Sun's instructions work fine, and I built lyx 1.1.6pre3 with xforms 0.89 following his instructions. Thanks! But I found out yesterday quite by accident that the problem is elsewhere. To wit: It turns out that the problem of no Greek letters on lyx is limited to the case where I run lyx on a KDE 1.1.2 desktop. I found this out quite by accident when I used ssh X forwarding to show a lyx-using friend the problem, and MY version of lyx displayed just fine on HIS desktop (SuSE 7.0, I think KDE 2.x). If I use VNC to start a twm desktop on my machine and then view it, once again the lyx display is fine if started on the twm desktop. So the problem is KDE, not lyx. It seems like this must be some kind of FAQ with a well-documented solution, but I'm not finding it. The only message lyx produces on startup is "Warning: Setting language `default' to `english'." -- Stephen Walton, Professor of Physics and Astronomy, California State University, Northridge [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Sun, 7 Jan 2001, Wai-Sun Chia wrote: To help in solving the RH7 mysteries/nightmares, below is the combination that I have success with: Distro: RH7 Kernel: 2.4.0-test9 (with ReiserFS patch) Gcc: gcc-2.96-69 (from Rawhide) Glibc:glibc-2.2-9 (from Rawhide) Xforms: RPM homemade (instructions as per previous posting, and yes the forms_sngl.ps.gz is from the RH 0.88 RPM) Lyx: lyx-1.1.6pre3 Stephen Walton wrote: I just installed lyx-1.1.5fix2-1.i386.rpm and xforms-0.88-15.i386.rpm on my RedHat 7.0 system; the former from the LyX FTP site and the latter from the RedHat 7.0 Powertools CD. 1.1.6-pre3 and wv
Nice to see Word import in 1.1.6-pre3 - I never use Word myself, but people insist on sending me files in .doc format. However, I'm having trouble getting it to work. With wv versions 0.5.26 and 0.5.44, lyx won't detect wv (i.e. after reconfiguring there is still no "Import - Word" option). With version 0.6.2, Import-Word gives me all the LaTeX commands' but the text is just digital garbage. Is there another version of wv I should be using, or is there something else I should have installed? Thanks, Robin

Re: looking for pseudocode class
Thanks Herbert I have started using the "algorithm" package and I like it. > http://www.educat.hu-berlin.de/~voss/lyx/algorithm/algorithm.html A few questions: 1- How to remove the automatic numbering of algorithms (floats) ? (and either leave it blank with just the word Algorithm preceding the caption, or with a parameter to specify explicitly the number or label I want ) 2- How to have comments after "endfor" printed ? 3- Is there a way to have margin notes work within the algorithm float? 4- Is there a way to have vertical lines, on the LHS, displayed to link the beginning and end of a loop (e.g., for endfor ) ? thanks Frederic
HTH, Lior. On Tue, 9 Jan 2001, Chris Schulbert wrote: > Hi!
The only message lyx produces on startup is "Warning: Setting language `default' to `english'." -- Stephen Walton, Professor of Physics and Astronomy, California State University, Northridge [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Sun, 7 Jan 2001, Wai-Sun Chia wrote: > To help in solving the RH7 mysteries/nightmares, below is the > combination that I have success with: > > Distro: RH7 > Kernel: 2.4.0-test9 (with ReiserFS patch) > Gcc: gcc-2.96-69 (from Rawhide) > Glibc:glibc-2.2-9 (from Rawhide) > Xforms: RPM homemade (instructions as per previous posting, and yes > the forms_sngl.ps.gz is from the RH 0.88 RPM) > Lyx: lyx-1.1.6pre3 > > > > Stephen Walton wrote: > > > > I just installed lyx-1.1.5fix2-1.i386.rpm and xforms-0.88-15.i386.rpm on > > my RedHat 7.0 system; the former from the LyX FTP site and the latter > > from the RedHat 7.0 Powertools CD. I think the .lyxpipe is a great idea, and make extensive use of the custom export command. What I would really appreciate are more customizable interfaces, which let me happily pipe my stuff! I'd like to have about five custom export commands, greyed out if not set up... Get things less specific and more interchangeable... As for the fax, the former solution wasn't ideal; I had problems to automize reading and converting the fax addressbook for a system-wide efax. But that didn't really matter. Of course my users can still print to '-Pfax -J 1234567' (efax is able to print to lpr), but it's less convenient for them. Just an example. As for faxes printed to lpr, well, why should I use another GUI than LyX when sending; and most Picture viewers can display the fax-specific tiff format, so I don't need a Fax program for displaying them either. I'd "really need" an addressbook in/for LyX that lets me trigger a number of export functions of LyX, for faxes or various stuff. PS: Hope you don't mind the K.D.E. joke :) Andre
Table of Contents in Text output?
How do I get the table of contents generated with ascii text output? I was playing with the example_lyxified.lyx and I exported the output to text. I used the File|Export|Ascii Text.. option. When I edit the text output, I see THIS IS THE TITLE OF THE DOCUMENT by Fee LyX June 12, 1972 \tableofcontents{} 1 Basic Philosophy The basic philosophy of LyX is that you should worry about the content of what you're writing and not the form. As you can see, it generates \tableofcontents{} instead of an actual table of contents. How do I get it do generate an actual table of contents. I would like the output similar to this text linux doc. http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/Alpha-HOWTO brian -- Brian Lavender http://www.brie.com/brian/

What was the language of the document? wv supports only latin1 encoding (but it is possible to change this).
VNC and LyX
I find that LyX V1.1.5fix2 and earlier does not work over VNC. I've not done any homework to establish why. With the fundamental changes in approach to GUI etc, is this likely to change in the near future? Picture alignment
Hi, When I insert pictures into a file (say two pictures in one "wide figure float") the pictures seem to be nicely in their place in the LyX window but when I actually compile the file and view the dvi, the pictures are at top of the page rather than where I want them to be. Any suggesstions? Regards, Remzi

However, you can try to control the placement by putting '!h' (without the quotes) in the float placement box of the Layout->Document dialog. 'h' means: here; '!h' means: try really really hard to place this float here. Thanks. I managed to put a table in header of the page. That trick with \newcommanad was what I missed. I also installed succesfully "fancybox" package and made a page as you wrote: \pagestyle{\fbox}{} But I couldn't compile the documentation file fancybox.doc that came together with fancybox.sty. TeX gives me a lot of errors :( That's while I am asking here how to put a border on the page, including the header and textarea. Also, would (or could) this border and the table, that I'm puting in the header, merge where they touch. One other question, why the text in the tables arranges so close to th upper edge of the cells? I'm just inserting a table, writing text in it, and when I go to preview it looks like the letters hold upper edge of the cells on their heads:( These questions are inspired from the thesis that I'm writing now with LyX. With 50 pages, half of them with complex formulas, typed for 5 days, I couldn't imagine something more easier and powerfull than LyX. 10x to all that made it work.
