You print the document and paste the photo in.

IEEE take your camera ready copy and a passport photo and do the placement
by hand. You aren't meant to be able to insert a picture there within

Spacing and fontsize in floats

2001-06-29 Thread Detlev Humann

Hi!
I´ve got many floats in my document like
this:

caption
figure/table
"my explanation"

I`d like to change the space between figure/table
and "my explanation".
Is there a way to do it automatically for all
floats or do I have to change it manually in every float?

Can I have a special fontsize for "my explanation"?
In scientific texts it is usual to have a smaller fontsize (or italic) for
explanations or references under tables/figures.
Is there a way to change the fontsize of "my
explanation" for all floats or do I have to change it in each float by
myself?

Thanks in advance
Detlev

One important thing to take into account is that in order to obtain full

Well that's because the new tabular code in 1.1.6 is not really finished.
You can work with it but it has some drawbacks (memory consumtion is one
of them!) and the above mess probably another one. We don't yet get all
updates right, but you'll see if you set the width afterwards, exit reenter

Do you know why? Because.. I cut it so much that I also commented out this

Now I try it and it works OK. Please include the epsfig package (just like

return to previous buffer ?

2001-06-29 Thread Ronald Florence

Is there a way to configure LyX so the switching of buffers is like
[x]emacs? An example:

In LyX, if I start a session by editing file A, then switch to file
B, then to file C, then `kill' the file C buffer, I end up in file
  A. To go back to file B I have to reload it from the Documents menu.

The handling in [x]emacs seems much more logical and useful: if I
kill buffer C, it would put me back in the file B buffer, where I
was before I started editing file C.

My question is based on experience with LyX1.1.5fix2 and earlier
versions. (We use too many tables to switch to 1.1.6 yet.) Thanks,

Entering \mathbf{c} in math mode is displayed as written (without backslash).

It is nice that lyx is able to display in bold font, but is that the expected
 behavior?

Don't know. It propably depends on what you expect...

making \columnbreak in multicol work

2001-06-29 Thread Christopher M. Jones

I just switched to a new Linux distro (Debian 2.2r3 from Mandrake
6.something). Somehow, the \columnbreak command that worked before now works
no longer (i.e., documents that were written under the old distro don't work
under the new distro). I have returned to the documentation for multicols,
but find no mention of the command, nor do I recall where I originally found
it. Is this command part of another package on which multicols optionally (?)
depends? What could be the reason for the break, and what is the fix? Or how
should I go about investigating?

Scary LyX moment!

2001-06-29 Thread Glenn Hutchings

I had LyX go down on me earlier today (no innuendo intended
:-) -- I'd been converting a doc to LyX format all morning
when it suddenly bombed. No problem, you say, there's an
emergency save file created. True enough, but when I looked
harder I found that both my original file and the emergency
save file were zero bytes big. :-( to say the least.

Luckily (*very* luckily) I'd recently peeked in the file with
emacs to see how something was stored -- most of my changes
were still sitting in a buffer (but got hastily saved to
disk!).

Admittedly I'm living on the bleeding edge a bit -- lyx
1.1.6fix2, xforms 0.89. But maybe something like the emacs
autosave gimmick (saving a copy of the file at intervals to a
completely different filename, which gets removed when a user
save takes place) wouldn't go amiss in LyX.

Detlev

I've had the same problem with the screen fonts some days ago when upgrading

It was solved by going in EditPreferencesscreen fonts and then toggle use

Thanks,
I had the toggling activated already, but some experimentation with the
scaling to 100 and 100 did the job. Now I can see the formulas and
write.
Have still to twist the screen in order to get a nice look.

After some test I think that Juergen's one fits better my necessities.

One important thing to take into account is that in order to obtain full

text. So first set the with of the columns and then write the text. If ones
writes first and then sets the width it become a mess.

Well that's because the new tabular code in 1.1.6 is not really finished.
You can work with it but it has some drawbacks (memory consumtion is one
of them!) and the above mess probably another one. We don't yet get all
updates right, but you'll see if you set the width afterwards, exit reenter

Why don't we try this I'll send you a working latex file try to make it
work in your environment. Let's go from there. If it works, it means that
there is someting wrong with the usage. otherwise it is an environment
problem (may be tex database is not updated with the place of the new

Also, I am new in lyx. I haven't tried this one in lyx.. (actually I

Best is to save it as HTML. I haven't used KLyX for ages, so don't know if
it has the Export HTML function. If not, download tth and use it from the

Alternatively, if you have Abiword, you can try exporting it as LaTeX,

return to previous buffer ?

My question is based on experience with LyX1.1.5fix2 and earlier
versions. (We use too many tables to switch to 1.1.6 yet.) Thanks,

making \columnbreak in multicol work

2001-06-29 Thread Christopher M. Jones

I just switched to a new Linux distro (Debian 2.2r3 from Mandrake
6.something). Somehow, the \columnbreak command that worked before now works
no longer (i.e., documents that were written under the old distro don't work
under the new distro). I have returned to the documentation for multicols,
but find no mention of the command, nor do I recall where I originally found
it. Is this command part of another package on which multicols optionally (?)
depends? What could be the reason for the break, and what is the fix? Or how
should I go about investigating?

Re: Strange table numbering

2001-06-29 Thread Glenn Hutchings

Hi there!

I found out the circumstances when table floats get numbered
1, 3, 5, 7, ... or 2, 4, 6, 8, ... I put longtables inside
the floats, since doing that seemed to get the tables
centred. (Having used LyX more now, I know that's not the
way to do it -- you just set the paragraph layout to
centred.)

Is the longtable float numbering a bug? Is is sensible to
put a longtable (designed for making tables span multiple
pages) inside a float? Then again, how else can a longtable
get a caption?

Glenn

But maybe something like the emacs
autosave gimmick (saving a copy of the file at intervals to a
completely different filename, which gets removed when a user
save takes place) wouldn't go amiss in LyX.

a float can only be one page, otherwise it makes no sense
for latex for the formatting process.
longtables with captions are possible. have a look at

IEEE take your camera ready copy and a passport photo and do the placement

explanation" for all floats or do I have to change it in each float by
myself?

Thanks in advance

I've had the same problem with the screen fonts some days ago when upgrading
to mandrake 8.0.
It was solved by going in Edit>Preferences>screen fonts and then toggle "use
scalable fonts". I had no problem with math symbols.

Thanks,
I had the toggling activated already, but some experimentation with the
scaling to 100 and 100 did the job. Now I can see the formulas and
write.
Have still to twist the screen in order to get a nice look.

Dear Juergen and Herbert, thanks for your suggestions.
After some test I think that Juergen's one fits better my necessities.

One important thing to take into account is that in order to obtain full
paragraph support, it is necessary to set the column width before to write any

We don't yet get all
updates right, but you'll see if you set the width afterwards, exit reenter
the file the mess should be gone ;)

No, it's not caption, it's like standard style, only smaller.

Why don't we try this I'll send you a working latex file try to make it
work in your environment. Let's go from there. If it works, it means that
there is someting wrong with the usage. otherwise it is an environment
problem (may be tex database is not updated with the place of the new
IEEEtran.cls file- use texhash-)

Also, I am new in lyx. I haven't tried this one in lyx.. (actually I
didn't even know there was a IEEE layout).. So try to obtain dvi file
using "latex filename" from the command line.

I am going to send the latex file to you individually.

Best is to save it as HTML. I haven't used KLyX for ages, so don't know if
it has the "Export HTML" function. If not, download tth and use it from the
command line.

Alternatively, if you have Abiword, you can try exporting it as LaTeX,
opening it in Abiword and saving it as a Word document. This works in
theory, but the only time I tried it on my box, it choked.

The reason: "epsfig" Re: ieee class document and images

2001-06-29 Thread A. Gunes Koru

I was just working on the latex file that i was gonna send to you..
(cutting unnecessary parts, bla, bla).. Then I got a message exactly like
yours

! Undefined control sequence.
\biography ...noindent \setbox 0\hbox {\resizebox

{25mm}{32mm}{\includegraph...

Do you know why? Because.. I cut it so much that I also commented out this
line

\usepackage{epsfig}

Now I try it and it works OK. Please include the epsfig package (just like
in the example I sent to you).. I guess we discovered the reason by a
small mistake.. (I am glad i tried to make it short before sending it to
you) :)

return to previous buffer ?

Very interesting, but when I tried it with a gif file convert said me that

making \columnbreak in multicol work

Glenn

But maybe something like the emacs
autosave gimmick (saving a copy of the file at intervals to a
completely different filename, which gets removed when a user
save takes place) wouldn't go amiss in LyX.

a float can only be one page, otherwise it makes no sense
for latex for the formatting process.
longtables with captions are possible. have a look at
