scaling EPS how?

2001-11-06 Thread gofreddo

Hi Folks,
I am using a nice tool at the moment to
create some nice .eps images ... actually
it is MagicDrawUML ... and the images are
for software documentation. Also I am using
LyX as always for my thesis. The problem I
have is that the .eps files are too big for
the LyX pages and I need to somehow scale
them into the pages properly. (I have heard
of epsfig ... but don't know much about it.)
Can anyone make any suggestions regarding
this problem? Is there are scaling tool (I
heard of one called POSTER but have not been
able to get a hold of it), or other solution?
Thanks for help.

To include avi files you can use the following command in the preamble:

\newcommand{\video}[5]{\vspace{#3}\hspace{#2}{\pdfannot width #4 height
#5 depth 0cm { /Subtype /Movie /C [1 0 0] /Border [0 0 3] /Movie

\video{g.avi}{4cm}{12cm}{12cm}{12cm}

control
the location of one corner, and 4th and 5th the width and height of the

You can control the color of the frame and thickness by modifying
/Border.

Hope it helps

PS If you are using linix the avi file won't display properly, as far as

  Hi Torben,

I think you want to use it for a Powerpoint-like presentation?
AFAIK, PDF does not support embedded animations. However, you can use
the hyperlink feature. I'm using pdfscreen (which does actually include
hyperef), and just put an entry there:
\href{path-to-movie.mpg}
By clicking that link a remote call to netscape is done (or whatever you
configure in your pdf reader). So you just have to make sure that there
is an appropriate MIME definition, and the browser knows what to do with
it.

In my case (Linux), this is something like:

in $HOME/.mime.types:
type=video/mpeg  \
desc=MPEG Video  \
exts=mpeg,mpg,mpe,mpv,vbs,mpegv

and in netscape-preferences-Navigator-Applications
en entry for MPEG Video:
mpeg_play -dither color -quiet -loop -quality on -controls off %s

Then just make sure you have an (de-iconified) netscape running in
another virtual desktop, and the animated presentation can start :-)

BTW, this way you can embed almost everything into a presentation...
I'm using it on a regular basis for computer-aided presentations (using
PPower4, which you also should have a look at if you want to do nice pdf
presentations: http://www-sp.iti.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/software/ppower4/)

Unfortunately you cannot scale relative to the size of the original figure

scaling EPS how?

2001-11-06 Thread gofreddo

Hi Folks,
I am using a nice tool at the moment to
create some nice .eps images ... actually
it is MagicDrawUML ... and the images are
for software documentation. Also I am using
LyX as always for my thesis. The problem I
have is that the .eps files are too big for
the LyX pages and I need to somehow scale
them into the pages properly. (I have heard
of epsfig ... but don't know much about it.)
Can anyone make any suggestions regarding
this problem? Is there are scaling tool (I
heard of one called POSTER but have not been
able to get a hold of it), or other solution?
Thanks for help.
Regards
Fred

Can't you just double-click an image in LyX and tell
LyX how to scale it? There are many options for scaling.

To include avi files you can use the following command in the preamble:

\newcommand{\video}[5]{\vspace{#3}\hspace{#2}{\pdfannot width #4 height
#5 depth 0cm { /Subtype /Movie /C [1 0 0] /Border [0 0 3] /Movie
<> }}}

and then, by means of ERT

\video{g.avi}{4cm}{12cm}{12cm}{12cm}

where the first argument is the name of the file, and the 2nd and 3rd
control
the location of one corner, and 4th and 5th the width and height of the
box
You can control the color of the frame and thickness by modifying
/Border.

Hope it helps

PS If you are using linix the avi file won't display properly, as far as
I know, but the pdf can be created in linux and can be displayed
correctly in windoze

PS For the other formats, i.e. mpeg and mov I do not know if the trick
will work, I have never tried

You should emulate your heros, but don't carry it too far. Especially
if they are dead.

I suppose the mailing list archive know the answer. IIRC the "canonical
workaround" is enabling or disabling scaled screen font in the preferences
dialog.

  Hi Torben,

I think you want to use it for a Powerpoint-like presentation?
AFAIK, PDF does not support embedded animations. However, you can use
the hyperlink feature. I'm using pdfscreen (which does actually include
hyperef), and just put an entry there:
\href{path-to-movie.mpg}
By clicking that link a remote call to netscape is done (or whatever you
configure in your pdf reader). So you just have to make sure that there
is an appropriate MIME definition, and the browser knows what to do with
it.

In my case (Linux), this is something like:

in $HOME/.mime.types:
type=video/mpeg  \
desc="MPEG Video"  \
exts="mpeg,mpg,mpe,mpv,vbs,mpegv"

and in netscape->preferences->Navigator->Applications
en entry for "MPEG Video":
mpeg_play -dither color -quiet -loop -quality on -controls off %s

Then just make sure you have an (de-iconified) netscape running in
another virtual desktop, and the animated presentation can start :-)

BTW, this way you can "embed" almost everything into a presentation...
I'm using it on a regular basis for computer-aided presentations (using
PPower4, which you also should have a look at if you want to do nice pdf
presentations: http://www-sp.iti.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/software/ppower4/)

Cheers,

You can scale an eps figure in Lyx as described above.

Unfortunately you cannot scale relative to the size of the original figure
but must scale relative to page size. Thus you must use your judgement
if relative dimensions are to be maintained.

pay attention, that you don't have the latest pre-version
of listing package. the commandnames changed. otherwise look in
the doc.

cross reference

2001-11-06 Thread E GCP

Hi!
Is there a way in LyX to have a cross reference to a name, so that when I
convert the document to pdf using hyperref, that name is hyperlinked?

Thanks,
Enrique
