That won't create a logical section break, but you don't really need one

reflected in the headers. Diehards may tell me I'm wrong, but remember
I'm just an author armed with a little knowledge.
There may be other reasons for using a real section break though.
It seems to me that latex consider section breaks when breaking the
pages. A page break may happen inside some long paragraph or
between two paragraphs, it will _not_ happen between
a section header and the first paragraph in the section.
A simulated section header using bigger letters will suffer from this
though.
So consider wether it is okay to get the * * * at the top

No killers, but several small ones. Here are some not yet mentioned:

* Free resizing. Xforms won't let you resize lyx smaller than the
initial size.

* The widget used for selecting paragraph type
standard,bullet,section,chapter,...

and get a pulldown menu with everything in view. No scrollbar. Just
move the mouse to the type you want and release the button.
Selecting paragraph types is less work this way.

True. But since I didn't know about that I guess I never needed lyx window
smaller that the initial size.

But pressing Alt+P+key is even lesser work.

The main advantage (yes, advantage) with xforms is that it supports latin2

problem is the comma that separates the index entry from the page number has

Re: Writing a Novel with LyX?

BTW, if you're not caught up in formalities and want a cheat, I've figured
out a way to do the *** for section breaks. Just hit ENTER and insert ERT
(click on the TeX) button and put the
following command in it:
\makebox[\textwidth][c]{* * *}

Then make sure that paragraph is flush left and adjust the paragraph
spacing as needed. E.g., add a bigskip before --
Layout->Paragraph->Vertical Space->bigskip

That won't create a logical section break, but you don't really need one
for a novel becuase the section divided by a *** is not indexed and not
reflected in the headers.
A simulated section header using bigger letters will suffer from this
though.
So consider wether it is okay to get the " * * * " at the top
or bottom of a page.

No killers, but several small ones. Here are some not yet mentioned:

* Free resizing. Xforms won't let you resize lyx smaller than the
initial size.

* The widget used for selecting paragraph type
"standard,bullet,section,chapter,..."
is much faster. With xforms you click it, get a drop list with a
scrollbar
and navigate that. With qt3 you click it and keep the button pressed,
and get a pulldown menu with everything in view. No scrollbar. Just
move the mouse to the type you want and release the button.
Selecting paragraph types is less work this way.

True. But since I didn't know about that I guess I never needed lyx window
smaller that the initial size.

But pressing Alt+P+ is even lesser work.

The main advantage (yes, advantage) with xforms is that it supports latin2
characters out of the box, while with qt I have to chase some package
around. And I really want to work using computer, not to work on computer.

Thanks for the quick answer. Is there a manual for these type of small

Merging two ps files

2003-04-04 Thread Pascal Francq
Hi,
I have two ps files, one generated by LyX (the core of my thesis) and another
one generated by LaTeX (the title page). Since the title page has to respect
a convention and the laTeX template cannot be imported in lyX, I have to work
with these files. How can I merge the two files?
Thanks.

You probably created your own .layout files in the ~/.lyx directory.
Starting from LyX 1.3.0, these file need to contain
  Input stdlayouts.inc
  Input stdfloats.inc

Change the paragraph layout to the default (Justified).
Add in Latex mode '\centerline{' before the image, and
'}' after it.

I was able to get LyX to create a title page, approval page, etc. for my
thesis by modifying the thesis.layout textclass file.

I've modified a template for a University of Calgary thesis that allows you
to type in all the pertinent info and a title page is automatically
generated.
If you like I can send you the relevent files. They should be easy to
modify to your formatting requirements.

Cheers,
