The carat key on your keyboard is defined as accent key.
So ^+a produces â
and ^+d produces ^d as the d can't be accented with a carat.

I don't understand the problem. To get y² type y+^+2. There is only a
problem when the first character in the superscript can be accented with
a carat (on my keyboard this are the characters a, e, g, h, i, j, o, u,
s, w, and y). Then you have to type y+^+SPACE+a instead of y+^+a.

user-defined section and subsection's numbering

2005-06-09 Thread SN M

I need to change the numbering of section/subsection
heading in my document created using latex.
Specifically, I need to create the heading with the
numbering as a user-defined combination of Uppercase
lowercase letter and/or arabic numerals.

For example, I would like to specficially define what
goes into the numbering part of each
section's and subsection's heading,as:

NY New York [section's heading]

  NY-1 Queens [subsection's heading]
  NY-2 Manhattan

NJ New Jersey [section's heading]

  NJ-1 [subsection's heading]
  NJ-2
The numbering is defined as 'NY' for the fist
section's heading and 'NJ' for the second sectino's
heading.

The section heading are necessary to be alphabetical
order.

What do I need to do in order to define the numbering
part of each section's heading separately?

The carat key on your keyboard is defined as accent key.
So ^+a produces â
and ^+d produces ^d as the d can't be accented with a carat.

I don't understand the problem. To get y² type y+^+2. There is only a
problem when the first character in the superscript can be accented with
a carat (on my keyboard this are the characters a, e, g, h, i, j, o, u,
s, w, and y). Then you have to type y+^+SPACE+a instead of y+^+a.

user-defined section and subsection's numbering

2005-06-09 Thread SN M

I need to change the numbering of section/subsection
heading in my document created using latex.
Specifically, I need to create the heading with the
numbering as a user-defined combination of Uppercase
lowercase letter and/or arabic numerals.

For example, I would like to specficially define what
goes into the numbering part of each
section's and subsection's heading,as:

NY New York [section's heading]

  NY-1 Queens [subsection's heading]
  NY-2 Manhattan

NJ New Jersey [section's heading]

  NJ-1 [subsection's heading]
  NJ-2
The numbering is defined as 'NY' for the fist
section's heading and 'NJ' for the second sectino's
heading.

The section heading are necessary to be alphabetical
order.

What do I need to do in order to define the numbering
part of each section's heading separately?

So the of the dead key doesn.t appear immediately but

Not only. They were also used by Christian to generate the lists of
lfuns in the LyX Wiki.

This list was in turn the base for the file 'lfuns.txt' in my pyLyX
package (http://wiki.lyx.org/Tools/PyClient).  'lfuns.txt' file provides
the base for the wrapping of lfuns into python functions and the
`lyx-bindings` command line tool providing emacs-style help (apropos,
bindings, showkey, whereis) on key-bindings and lfuns.

> They should indeed be replaced by something more useful.

We only need to find out what "something more useful" is. LyX still
comes with the file Reference.lyx, but

NOTE: this document is, alas, very out of date. It is wrong in many
places, and omits lots of information about newer versions of LyX.

(I suppose this is why it does no longer turn up in the Help menu.)

IMHO, Reference.lyx should be revived and reorganised. Also, it should
be auto-generated from a template (similar to the LaTeX Configuration), so
that menu, toolbar, and keyboard bindings were determined from the
actually chosen configuration files. (pyLyX contains a recursive parser
for *.bind files, something similar could be written for *.ui and *.menu.

However, detailed ideas for reviving Reference.lyx might be more
suitable in the lyx-doc list (where I sent a cc of this mail).

German keyboards

2005-06-09 Thread Jose Capco
Dear List,

Ok, this is not a lyx problem.. but probably someone
is kind enough to help me. I am using a German
keyboard with windows, unfortunately I believe
microsoft has some problems regarding German keyboard
drivers. I need to type the carat "^" twice in order
to get it.. and once I type it a double carat will
appear "^^" and so I have then to press backspace.. so
basically I am doing 3 key punches to make a single
key punch. I dont find this practical especially when
I want to type a lot of math with superscripts in LyX
.. Does someone experience this, if so does he/she
knows a solution to this (like a certain driver or
software that allows compatibility with the German
keyboard layout). Thanks in advance

Sincerely,
Jose Capco

Lyx Meta key for windows

2005-06-09 Thread Omair-Inam Abdul-Matin
I'm using the XEmacs key binding for windows. I can get the Alt key to
work as a meta key for letters that do not correspond to a menu shortcut
key. However, if I press Alt + F, for example, that corresponds to the
File menu, so instead of getting the Meta + F effect, I open the File
Menu. How can I get a fully functional Meta key on windows...?

Lyx meta Key on Windows (lyx 1.3.5)

2005-06-09 Thread Omair-Inam Abdul-Matin

Hi,

I'm using the XEmacs key binding. I can access some of the meta key
options using the Alt key as the meta key but I am unable to get full
meta key functionality on windows. Specifically when I press a meta key
that is also a menu shortcut, the menu opens. E.g. if I press Alt + F
the file menu opens. Is there a solution to this problem on windows?

Hello,

I am not sure that there is a solution to this problem, besides
removing menu shortcuts for things like File.

That's not true.

The carat key on your keyboard is defined as accent key.
So ^+a produces â
and ^+d produces ^d as the "d" can't be accented with a carat.

Specifically, I need to create the heading with the
numbering as a user-defined combination of Uppercase &
lowercase letter and/or arabic numerals.

For example, I would like to specficially define what
goes into the numbering part of each
section's and subsection's heading",as:

NY New York [section's heading]

  NY-1 Queens [subsection's heading]
  NY-2 Manhattan

NJ New Jersey [section's heading]

  NJ-1 [subsection's heading]
  NJ-2
The numbering is defined as 'NY' for the fist
section's heading and 'NJ' for the second sectino's
heading.

The section heading are necessary to be alphabetical
order.

What do I need to do in order to define the numbering
part of each section's heading separately?

Equation numbering

2005-06-09 Thread Geoffrey Lloyd
Not strictly a lyx question but i hope the experinece on here can help me.

In Lyx/Latex how can I control the formatting of the equations numbers. At
present I have

 (1.1) (1.2) etc...

what I need is

  [1.1] [1.2] etc...

Is there a simple way to do this?

spell checker problems :-(

2005-06-09 Thread Srinivas Nedunuri
I installed the spellchecker as per the instructions in
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/WindowsSetup but get the following error message
when I try Edit|SpellCheck...

The spell-checker has failed. []b*[]file "c:/aspell/data/iso8859-1.dat can
not be opened for reading

followed by a core dump. (nice!)

I checked and there is indeed no such file in the install folder. Anyone
know what I can do at this point?

thanks!

Re: Arrows in math mode

please see my posting "text over a symbol" and Uwe Stohr's reply. Basically
you can get what you want with a \xleftarrow or \xrightarrow command.

Hi

I am trying to reproduce the following and wondered whether it was possible
in Lyx mathmode

some text here
x-->y

Where the arrow has a solid line and the text is written over the arrow
rather than on a separate line although this wouldn't matter as long as the
arrow was long enough for the text to be over it.

Anyone got any ideas?

dear Jose,

The explanation is simple and there is no bug at all:

This key is a so called dead key. These are used to
produce combined
letters like â or Ü (you have an Ü on a german
keyboard but you can also
produce it with a dead key sequence).
So the of the dead key doesn.t appear immediately but
only after
pressing the letter with which to combine it. Try
pressing the space key
after the caret and you will see that it will appear
on its own. So you
will need 2 keypresses.

I have also this same problem. And as the error box comes before Lyx

I will however try your other suggestions tomorrow.

I don't really know if this is the problem, but be sure you have the

check that in Edit->Preferences->File formats, for PDF the viewer is

Be sure also that you have "\bin\" and

Hope it helps

David Boutillier wrote:

I am having difficulty getting LyXWin working properly.

1) I have followed the detailed notes for installing LyXWin on XP
from the

LyX/WindowsSetup page of the LyX wiki-wiki.

2) I have opened LyX from a command window with the command lyx -dbg
3. In

the command prompt window. Among the things produced on the screen are:
Path of binary: C:/LaTeX/LyX/lyx/bin/

Checking whether LyX is run in place. no

System directory search path: C:/LaTeX/LyX/lyx/Resources/lyx/;
C:/LaTeX/LyX/lyx/share/lyx/;usr/local/share/lyx

System directory: 'C:/LaTeX/LyX/lyx/share/lyx/'

User Lyx directory: 'C:/Documents and Settings/db/.lyx/' .

3) When I reconfigure I get a lot of stuff in the command window.
Some of it

is as follows:

C:\LaTeX\LyX\lyx\share\lyx\..\..\bin;
C:\LaTeX\LyX\lyx\bin;c:\latex\imagemagick-6.2.3-q16;C:\LaTeX\texmf\miktex\bi

n;C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\Sustem32\Wbem

Usage: C:\LaTeX\LyX\lyx\bin\sed.exe [OPTION] .
.

configure: error: cannot find chkconfig.ltx script.

What does this error mean? How can I fix it? Also, I have the folders
c:\latex\gs, and c:\latex\ghostgm that are not mentioned in the
search path.
I tried changing my PATH to include every folder with an .exe file
that has

anything to do with LyX, but that hasn't seemed to make any difference.

4) I have upgraded to a more recent version of sed. When I enter sed
-version into the command window, I get:

GNU sed version 4.1.4

5) I deleted the .lyx folder from c:\documents and settings\name>, and
that got things mostly working, but when I try to export of view a
.lyx file
as a .pdf, I get a dialogue box that says "Cannot view file. No
information
for viewing PDF (dvipdfm)". I have Acrobat reader 7.0 installed in a
nearby
folder whose name does not contain any spaces. Also, when I export a
.lyx
file as a .ps file, ghostview does not open, and I cannot control
where the

.ps file goes. Is this to be expected?

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

It would be interesting to see if you have problems with LyX/Win 1.3.6pre,
