Many thanks! In retrospect, it seems obvious, but I just didn't think of that. 
(newbie!!)
 
Is it in the help files? If you are in Math mode, it is much nicer to put 
commands in line than having to use the ERT box anyway.

will bring up a new pair of the latex-kind.

Because that's the correct way (TM).

This is a really bad advice pretty much in line with You don't really
want Section headings, you just want things in 18 pt bold font.
