Environment Depth question..

2005-09-04 Thread Pierre Marc Dumuid

Hi All,
I guess this has been asked many a time, but I find the way the
environment depth thing a bit strange.
I find it wierd that you have to click to "increase the environment
depth" for each paragraph in an environment. I.e.

for entering the following into lyx:

1. Non-words
 *  fooblog
 *  lyxlog
 *  laughter
2. test

I have to:
a) choose enumerate
b) Type "Non-words" and press enter
c) click the "Increase environment depth icon in the toolbar
d) Type "fooblog"
e) click the "Increase environment depth icon in the toolbar
f) Type "lyxlog"
g) click the "Increase environment depth icon in the toolbar
h) Type "laughter"
i) Type "test" and press enter

I really find steps (e) and (g) REALLY annoying. I'd rather it stayed
at that environment depth when I press return, and have a "decrease
envionment depth" option.
It becomes more and more annoying when there are a lot more that 3 items
within the "environment depth"

Regards,
Pierre

P.S. I'm not on the mailing list, so any comments, please reply to my
email..

Re: Windows spellchecker for LyX?

Ah, that would explain my problem. The Wiki was non-functional the night I
installed this, so I had no idea about some of these quirky installation
issues. Maybe this info should also be bundled with the installer?

Anyway, the need to install aspell to c:\ is unfortunate, because the way my
computer is set up, c:\ is not a drive to which I can install anything. I
keep everything on f:. Hopefully a future version will correct this.

Thanks for the info!

Check the 'Improved PDF viewing'

Note you don't get the pdf through 'export', choose 'view' and then pdflatex.

Certainly after you set the lyx configuration according the webpage
above. :) because lyx doesn't set it self.

Still it would be great, if it were possible to do that with any text.
Since the functionality is there already for the import... I try to put
a feature request...

If LyX interprets \textcolor{red}{} as you'd like, why not add a
pre-processor step to your conversion. Something like (untested):

$ sed 's/\\fp{}/\\textcolor{red}{}/g' input.tex > output.tex
$ diff -u input.tex output.tex

Unfortunatelly, LyX does not do that. I was very surprised since color
text gets exported to LaTeX as \textcolor{} but the import does not
work. It gets imported as two ERT boxes: one with \textcolor{red}{ and
the other with the closing brace }.

Thank you,

David

John,

  What happens when you press ctrl-d for the dvi output? Also, have you tried
ctrl-h which runs pdflatex and produces a .pdf file on disk?

It is, and it's identical to what I get when I (successfully) define and
use the example macro.

The macro definition does not go in math mode, so you were on the right
track the first time.

The only thing I can think of is that there's a problem earlier in your
document.

At any rate, here's one way to define the macro.

1. In the mini-buffer, type 'math-macro macrowarg 1' (without the
quotes) and hit enter. The macro definition box should materialize.

2. In the left entry of the macro definition box, type '2+\sqrt' and,
inside the argument box for the square root, type '#1' (both again
without the quotes).

3. Try typing \macrowarg inside math mode, and enter something in the
argument box.

If it doesn't work, try posting a minimal document that fails.

Paul

Maybe, Srinivas, it is simpler to do the following:

1. write \newcommand{\macrowarg}[1] and select it;

2. crtl+m;

3. insert 2+\sqrt{#1 in the first empty box.

This should work fine.

You can do this for mathed but not for the rest of LyX. Eg, typing as
normal text "$a=b+c$" (without quotes), highlighting the block and
selecting Insert->Math->Display Formula will convert the code into a
mathed inset.

copying LaTeX text into a LyX document from clipboard

2005-09-04 Thread David Soukal

Hello,

I was wondering whether it is possible to paste a well-formated fragment
of LaTeX code from clipboard into an open document in such a way that
LyX interprets the LaTeX code being inserted? The standard "paste"
command will, of course, treat the content as a regular piece of text,
but I'd like to paste the text interpreted.

I realize it's possible to import the whole document and then copy the
fragments from the LyX, but it would come in handy to have the option to
paste only pieces of LaTeX code without having to do anything else.

Thanks for any hints.

David

ps. The reason why I'm asking this is that I'm importing a LaTeX
document from a co-author of our paper. He defined simple command \fp{}
which is a synonym for \textcolor{red}{}. The author did that for two
purposes: 1) to save some keystrokes :), and 2) to mark the portions of
text that were updated by him.

While LyX imports the document fine, it doesn't interpret the \fp{}
command but inserts the \fp{} blocks as ERT boxes which makes half of
the document uninterpreted and very hardly editable.

Actually, the reason that it isn't installed automatically is more prosaic:
I ran out of time and energy and we felt it was better to release LyX
1.3.6 some time together with a few notes which you could use to help
yourself rather than to release LyX 1.3.6 maybe oneday...

You can find the dictionary at http://aspell.net/win32/. In fact, you

OK, I was able to install aspell, and the English dictionary. I still
can't figure out how to get LyX to recognize the aspell and the English
dictionary. Under the spellchecker menu option, it only shows ispell as
the spellchecker (it's grayed out), and when I tried to "browse" for a
dictionary, it seemed to be looking for a different kind of file format
than what aspell uses.

I'm really looking forward to getting this working. It's exciting to
finally be able to use LyX on my Windows computer.

Thanks,

As Milos says you must install Aspell in C:\Aspell.

Put the dictionary and Aspell in C:\Aspell and install to C:\Aspell
It is good practice to install Windows programs with Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs. It is good practice to avoid installing
LyX and related programs in directories which have spaces such as
C:\Program Files even though it will often work. Put C:\Aspell in
the Path (read Windows help about how to add to the Path statement).

Maybe you will have to uninstall and reinstall Aspell and dictionary
depending on whether you put them in C:\Aspell to start with.

In Lyx, after the install of Aspell, use Edit -->Reconfigure and
that should enable spell-checking. Put the mouse cursor at
the beginning of the line to be checked. Don't worry about any
reference to Ispell, Aspell will be used when in C:\Aspell

http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyX136

**Things the installer doesn’t do**
The new installer will guide you through many of the steps needed to produce
a useful

LyX environment, but it doesn’t do everything. Some things it doesn’t do:
 a.. Check for the existence of viewers for your PostScript and PDF
documents and, if not present, offer to download them;

 b.. Install the Aspell spell checking library and dictionaries;
 c.. Install extra math fonts.
You’ll have to do those things yourself.

PostScript and PDF viewers
 a.. GSView is able to preview both PostScript and PDF documents.
 b.. Adobe’s Acroread is the canonical viewer for PDF documents.

After installing these tools, running Edit→Reconfigure should be enough for
LyX to find them. (You’ll have to restart LyX for the changes to take
effect.) It may be, however, that you’ll need to adjust the PATH prefix
entry in the Paths pane of the Edit→Preferences dialog. Check the Viewer
entry in the File formats pane of the same dialog to see if a viewer has
been found.

Spell checking
For spell checking to work in LyX you’ll need to install
Aspell-0-50-3-3-Setup.exe and dictionaries such as Aspell-en-0.50-2-3.exe
from the Windows Aspell web site.

These must be installed at C:\Aspell

AFAIK, it doesn't matter what the setting is in the Win version,
aspell is always used.

You installed aspell and the dictionary in C:\Aspell, as per the
