I cannot understand from where that prefix /usr/lib/qt3 comes from.
If you have installed the official cygwin Qt packages, perhaps this is

So no it is not dynamic, I use this copy and paste every time
which is free of typos. But, I do have Qt3-C++/-bin/-devel all installed.
I am not sure anymore what is default and what I chose. Seems to me
that I also installed some developer tools like bison and flex. So I will
uninstall these three Qt3s and see what happens. Nope, didn't work.
There was no /usr/lib/qt3 before I recently created it to accomodate
the script error report. I found it here:

$ sh link_includes
link_includes: line 6: cd: /usr/lib/qt3/include: No such file or directory
link_includes: line 20: cd: private: No such file or directory

No, it's important to get correct hyphenation, translation of strings such as 
figure, table, chapter etc., and -- especially in the case of FRENCH 
AFAIR -- correct typography (i.e. a small space after quotation marks).

The latter is what is causing your problems BTW.

Hi!

You can do the following. Use Bibtex as usual and when your document is 
finished (i.e. all your references have been included) choose one of the 
two following options.
If you know the directory where LyX stores temporary working files, then 
click on View-DVI. After that go to the LyX's temp directory. You will 
see the generated .tex file plus other files, among then the generated 
.bbl file. Open that file, copy its content and paste it (as external 
selection) into an ERT box at the end of your LyX file. Remove the 
Bibtex Generated Bibliography box and that's it!
If you donæt know LyX's temp directory, just export as Latex, compile to 
get the .bbl file and do as explained before.

So that's the problem. I investigated a bit and found that qt3-devel
is the culprit. It installs the following two files:

/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.csh
/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.sh

this files are automatically sourced when tcsh or sh are started, and
guess what? They define QTDIR to /usr/lib/qt3.
You need not uninstalling those packages, simply move out of the way
those two files by renaming them as

/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.csh.no
/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.sh.no

Really it suffices that the extension be different from .csh or .sh.
Time to update the wiki page, I guess...

with a starting + . As you see in the patch, you should look around
line 95 in the file src/support/environment.C.

The margins are adjustable because they are meant to be. :-)
You can reduce them a little, but take care so it don't get ugly.
Also consider adjusting the top/bottom margins by the same
percentage as the side margins.

There is no single standard for the margins on A5 or any
other paper.  About 66 letters per line is considered
optimal.  More, and the reader gets trouble finding the next
line.  Less, and he has to move his eyes a lot, and you get
trouble with the line breaks.

A smaller font will also help, but may cause readability problems.

Should I put something specific in the preferences of lyx ?

I tried to reinstall aspell with the windows installer independently but it
didn”t work, even in c:\aspell

This can be done with a small custom .layout, such as
the one at the end of this message.  It is a custom document
type (mybook) that simply inherits everything from
scrbook (Koma-script book) and adds a smallcode
paragraph type that provides scriptsized code with no
extra left margin.

Put it in .lyx/layouts, use the reconfigure menu option, and
you may then use the mybook document class which supports
smallcode paragraphs.

If you want mybook based on something else than scrbook,
change the \DeclareLaTeXClass and Input scrbook.layout
in the beginning.

For a different fontsize, replace scriptsize with another size.

If you like the extra left/right margins LyX-Code provides,
change to LeftMargin MMM and RightMargin MMM.

Note that this file is for lyx-1.4, but doing the same
for lyx-1.3 is no harder.

Yes, it was fairly easy with your hint. I put the epstopdf and
convert scripts in their own directoy at the beginning of PATH.
Shouldn't I do something else to connect them to epstopdf.exe
in Miktex\texmf and C:\ImageMagick\convert.exe ? I don't
have Tetex installed and I think not Cygwin's ImageMagick.
It seems too easy!

out a working installation. I think it is miraculous that you
could figure out all those configure switches. Now when
somebody asks about Cygwin and LyX they can be pointed
to your Wiki page. I'm writing this as I wait for make to finish.

Thar she blows! I had to copy lyx(-qt).exe to c:\cygwin\bin
because it complained about missing cywin1.dll and cygz.dll

Problem with hyperref and long names

Possibly this is not a lyx question but a latex one, but anyway, any answer 
will be greatly appreciated. I am trying to use hyperref to navigate my pfd 
document, but when I write long title names, hyperref is not able to break the 
line, and it gets out of the page. Is there any option in hyperref to avoid 
this situation? Or is any other package that manages this appropriately?

I'm an experienced user of LyX under Windows --- dating back to Claus 
Henschel's first port. 
Yesterday I installed Wiki Wiki's port v. 1.3.7. I'm running Windows XP Polish 
version, 
which means I am using MS code page cp1250.

Soon after installation I found out that I am not able to input Polish 
characters from 
keyboard the way it is commonly done under all Windows system, i.e. by pressing 
and 
holding the right Alt key and then pressing the relevant standard key. Nothing 
happens when 
I do this. This functioned, however, in the previous port (ver. 1.3.5) by Ruurd 
Reitsma 
without any problems. (In the case of still earlier port by Claus Henschel I 
remember I 
had to produce my own special keyboard file.) This version seems to come with 
either ISO 
8859 -1 or cp 1252 hard-wired --- I haven't checked which is the case.

I am fully aware of the possibily of creating keyboard bindings file or using 
any of the 
existing ones, but want to avoid this for other reasons.

Does by any chance any of you know whether this is intended situation or is a 
bug?
Or perhaps I have missed some setting option?

The PDF-bookmarks are restricted to one line. You can only set

- a short title
- or an alternative title that should be displayed as PDF-bookmark

I attached an example LyX-file showing the possibilities.

LyX input character set is hardcoded to ISO 8859-1, version 1.5 of LyX 
will hopefully support unicode to enable to write in every language.


However, Thomasz Łuczak uses LyX for Windows to write polish texts. I 
hope he can help you. Please report your results on this list.

Where did it go?

I tried exporting my lyx file as a latex file using File | Export | Latex. 
It appears to be carrying out the export, at least according to the status 
buffer, but I am unable to locate the file! Its not in the same directory. I 
looked in the lyx/tmp directory, and while there appear to be old 
conversions sitting there, there is nothing recent. I know this used to 
work, I haven't used Lyx in a few months, so i may be fogetting something. 
Can anyone help?

(I tried reconfigure already)

I've set File Formats-Viewer-DVI to xdvi -editor 'lyxclient -g %f %l'

and

Converters-LaTex to DVI-latex --src-specials $$i


When I ctrl-click on something in xdvi I get

command 'lyxclient -g /private/tmp/lyx_tmp1494gcbk5g/file.tex 560'
 exited with error code 1
lyxclient: no answer from server

and lyx crashes with this message printed in the terminal

Assertion triggered in T* boost::shared_ptrT::operator-() const [with 
T = LyXDataSocket] by failing check px != 0 in file

Using the native LyX/Mac version (i.e., not X11), I don't get this at  
all. The cursor in LyX properly jumps to the appropriate row (though  
the screen doesn't move to that row, whether or not the Cursor  
follows scrollbar option is checked in Preferences  User Interface).

Using the native LyX/Mac version (i.e., not X11), I don't get this at  
all. The cursor in LyX properly jumps to the appropriate row (though  
the screen doesn't move to that row, whether or not the Cursor  follows 
scrollbar option is checked in Preferences  User Interface).

Why not use the Mac native version?


Because I often use may mac remotely thru an SSH tunnel - aqua apps 
can't do that (unless you use vnc or somesuch).

You should do nothing apart assuring that they are in the system PATH
which you can set through the Advanced tab in Control Panel-System
or use path_prefix (see below).

No, don't do that. Simply add C:\cygwin\bin to the PATH as explained 
above.
You could set path_prefix as in the native version through LyX 
preferences.

The path_prefix should be written in posix (cygwin) syntax and I suggest
that you put as the first elements the following ones:

/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin

and then fill in whatever you like using ':' as a separator.
In this way you can put the epstopdf and convert scripts in /usr/local/bin
which is searched first.

Once you filled in path_prefix in LyX as I suggested above, I think that
you could also remove C:\cygwin\bin from the system PATH, but I have not
checked it (Hmm... may be it doesn't work...)

The tmp directory generated by LyX is C:/Cygwin/tmp

and also the path to article.cls which is in ~/.../base
separated from each other with a :  also :C:/reader7/etc

I'm not sure what is broken because of being a Pre version.
For instance Import Latex is missing, it just has text imports.

Don't know about 1.3.5, but in 1.3.7 you just change Layout - Document 
- Language - Quote Style to double and select text from the 
drop-down Type list.  If that's not a feature in 1.3.5, perhaps you 
should consider upgrading (which I recommend in any case).

Enrico's batch file (as modified below) should fix it for you.  If not, 
as a workaround, if you export your document to LaTeX and then run 
pdflatex against it, you should get the right result; it's only 
View-PDF (pdflatex) that screws up (because the .tex file written to 
the temp directory has mangled file names that start with C:/ (or 
whatever your drive letter is), and they apparently get misinterpreted 
by something (babel?).


Since you're using pdflatex, I think you will need to modify Enrico's 
batch file as follows.  First, do not name it latex.bat; you could call 
it pdflatex.bat, but I recommend something like mypdflatex.bat. 
Second, edit the last line to read pdflatex.exe %1.  Finally, inside 
LyX, go to Edit-Preferences-Converters, highlight the LaTeX-PDF 
(pdflatex) entry, change the Converter: line to read mypdflatex $$i, 
click Modify and then Save.  Hopefully that will fix the problem.

HOME instead of USERPROFILE. Perhaps I should patch the sources such
that USERPROFILE is used as a fallback if HOME is not set.

Perhaps normal for Cygwin/Linux but you can see all these
files and their paths with Uwe or Angus native LyXwin. Or
with Mingw build of LyX1.4.0_pre3. It is how I used to check
that LyX communicated with Miktex:texmf

I used to have Xemacs for Cygwin installed. I set the HOME variable
to C:\Cygwin\.xemacs for it. I now have another version of Xemacs set
to HOME there also so if I change it I have to move init.el files etc.

Oops. No acrord32 is short for the acrord32.exe I just noticed this
after trying it and it failed. So I tried :/c/reader7/Reader/ which didn't
work. I just tried it without the trailing slash /, and it didn't work.

I start LyX with an icon linked to C:\cygwin\usr\local\bin\LyX-1.4.0.exe
and it gives me an error message Locale en_US could not be set
which has never mattered in the past. My language is set to English in LyX.
The Locale error follows after the LyX will not be able to produce output.

I've watched Reconfigure process. It says yes to finding pdflatex
and acrord32 and gsview32. I don't have any Viewers, no DVI or
Postscript. I added :/c/gs/gs8.51/bin:/c/ghostgum/gsview to Path
prefix and turned on Instant Preview. No previewers. Before when
I had this problem I ran sh configure from lyx/resources/lyx I'll
give that -dbg init a try 

Display problems, LyX-Qt on Mac

Hi,

I've happily been using LyX on Mac under X11 with the xforms
interface for years now, and once in a while I try out the Qt
interface to see if it has gotten any better. I just tried fink's lyx-
qt 1.4.0pre5 and can't figure out how to access the lyx command line
(no meta key), and many important xemacs and aqua keybindings
requiring the meta key also appear to be inaccessible. All this is no
problem at all in xforms, where the Apple key works fine as Meta (set
up in ~/.Xmodmap).

Then I tried LyX-Qt for Mac, which is available as binary in version
1.3.7. That's almost useable.
However, in both of these LyX versions, I have problems with the
screen display of certain math glyphs. It's worse in fink's X11
version, so I'm attaching a screen shot below.
But in LyX-Qt/Mac, I also get into trouble whenever I try to get a
\iint or \oiint displayed. Here, by displayed I mean the screen
display without instant preview (I like to have the math equations
stand out in their own blue color instead of blending in with the
text). These integral symbols seem to be mapped onto the wrong
positions of the wasysym font in the symbols configuration file. Note
that in X11 lyx-qt, the \iint and \oiint symbols are actually
displayed correctly (in black, not in blue, for some reason...)
whereas the \int, \sum, \prod symbols appear with a dropped baseline.
So right now I'm sticking with lyx-xforms under Apple's X11, because
everything there works smoothly for me... maybe someone here has the
solution to these issues - I sure would like to move up to the new
features, but not at the expense of a broken screen display.

I could not reproduce that (maybe you could post a minimal LyX file
showing the behaviour somewhere), but make sure you have enabled T1 as
fontencoding (I think it's in the preferences, but I don't have a LyX
here, if unsire export your file to latex and look for a line
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}).

which is free of typos. But, I do have Qt3-C++/-bin/-devel all installed.
I am not sure anymore what is default and what I chose. Seems to me
that I also installed some developer tools like bison and flex. So I will
uninstall these three Qt3s and see what happens. Nope, didn't work.
There was no /usr/lib/qt3 before I recently created it to accomodate
the script error report. I found it here:

No, it's important to get correct hyphenation, translation of strings such as 
figure, table, chapter etc., and -- especially in the case of FRENCH 
AFAIR -- correct typography (i.e. a small space after quotation marks).

The latter is what is causing your problems BTW.

Re: Locating bibliography inside a document

Hi!

You can do the following. Use Bibtex as usual and when your document is 
finished (i.e. all your references have been included) choose one of the 
two following options.
If you know the directory where LyX stores temporary working files, then 
click on View-DVI. After that go to the LyX's temp directory. You will 
see the generated .tex file plus other files, among then the generated 
.bbl file. Open that file, copy its content and paste it (as external 
selection) into an ERT box at the end of your LyX file. Remove the 
Bibtex Generated Bibliography box and that's it!
If you donæt know LyX's temp directory, just export as Latex, compile to 
get the .bbl file and do as explained before.

So that's the problem. I investigated a bit and found that qt3-devel
is the culprit. It installs the following two files:

/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.csh
/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.sh

this files are automatically sourced when tcsh or sh are started, and
guess what? They define QTDIR to /usr/lib/qt3.
You need not uninstalling those packages, simply move out of the way
those two files by renaming them as

/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.csh.no
/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.sh.no

Really it suffices that the extension be different from .csh or .sh.
Time to update the wiki page, I guess...

You have to run make confclean and configure again as you have
/usr/lib/qt3 hardcoded in the Makefiles...
Also, make sure that you do not have those files above in /etc/profile.d

The margins are adjustable because they are meant to be. :-)
You can reduce them a little, but take care so it don't get ugly.
Also consider adjusting the top/bottom margins by the same
percentage as the side margins.

There is no single standard for the margins on A5 or any
other paper.  About 66 letters per line is considered
optimal.  More, and the reader gets trouble finding the next
line.  Less, and he has to move his eyes a lot, and you get
trouble with the line breaks.

A smaller font will also help, but may cause readability problems.

Should I put something specific in the preferences of lyx ?

I tried to reinstall aspell with the windows installer independently but it
didn”t work, even in c:\aspell

This can be done with a small custom .layout, such as
the one at the end of this message.  It is a custom document
type (mybook) that simply inherits everything from
scrbook (Koma-script book) and adds a smallcode
paragraph type that provides scriptsized code with no
extra left margin.

Put it in .lyx/layouts, use the reconfigure menu option, and
you may then use the mybook document class which supports
smallcode paragraphs.

If you want mybook based on something else than scrbook,
change the \DeclareLaTeXClass and Input scrbook.layout
in the beginning.

For a different fontsize, replace scriptsize with another size.

If you like the extra left/right margins LyX-Code provides,
change to LeftMargin MMM and RightMargin MMM.

Note that this file is for lyx-1.4, but doing the same
for lyx-1.3 is no harder.

Yes, it was fairly easy with your hint. I put the epstopdf and
convert scripts in their own directoy at the beginning of PATH.
Shouldn't I do something else to connect them to epstopdf.exe
in Miktex\texmf and C:\ImageMagick\convert.exe ? I don't
have Tetex installed and I think not Cygwin's ImageMagick.
It seems too easy!

Problem with hyperref and long names

Possibly this is not a lyx question but a latex one, but anyway, any answer 
will be greatly appreciated. I am trying to use hyperref to navigate my pfd 
document, but when I write long title names, hyperref is not able to break the 
line, and it gets out of the page. Is there any option in hyperref to avoid 
this situation? Or is any other package that manages this appropriately?

I'm an experienced user of LyX under Windows --- dating back to Claus 
Henschel's first port. 
Yesterday I installed Wiki Wiki's port v. 1.3.7. I'm running Windows XP Polish 
version, 
which means I am using MS code page cp1250.

Soon after installation I found out that I am not able to input Polish 
characters from 
keyboard the way it is commonly done under all Windows system, i.e. by pressing 
and 
holding the right Alt key and then pressing the relevant standard key. Nothing 
happens when 
I do this. This functioned, however, in the previous port (ver. 1.3.5) by Ruurd 
Reitsma 
without any problems. (In the case of still earlier port by Claus Henschel I 
remember I 
had to produce my own special keyboard file.) This version seems to come with 
either ISO 
8859 -1 or cp 1252 hard-wired --- I haven't checked which is the case.

I am fully aware of the possibily of creating keyboard bindings file or using 
any of the 
existing ones, but want to avoid this for other reasons.

Does by any chance any of you know whether this is intended situation or is a 
bug?
Or perhaps I have missed some setting option?

The PDF-bookmarks are restricted to one line. You can only set

- a short title
- or an alternative title that should be displayed as PDF-bookmark

I attached an example LyX-file showing the possibilities.

LyX input character set is hardcoded to ISO 8859-1, version 1.5 of LyX 
will hopefully support unicode to enable to write in every language.

Where did it go?

I tried exporting my lyx file as a latex file using File | Export | Latex. 
It appears to be carrying out the export, at least according to the status 
buffer, but I am unable to locate the file! Its not in the same directory. I 
looked in the lyx/tmp directory, and while there appear to be old 
conversions sitting there, there is nothing recent. I know this used to 
work, I haven't used Lyx in a few months, so i may be fogetting something. 
Can anyone help?

I've set File Formats-Viewer-DVI to xdvi -editor 'lyxclient -g %f %l'

and

Converters-LaTex to DVI-latex --src-specials $$i


When I ctrl-click on something in xdvi I get

command 'lyxclient -g /private/tmp/lyx_tmp1494gcbk5g/file.tex 560'
 exited with error code 1
lyxclient: no answer from server

and lyx crashes with this message printed in the terminal

Assertion triggered in T* boost::shared_ptrT::operator-() const [with 
T = LyXDataSocket] by failing check px != 0 in file 
../boost/boost/shared_ptr.hpp:253

Because I often use may mac remotely thru an SSH tunnel - aqua apps 
can't do that (unless you use vnc or somesuch).

You should do nothing apart assuring that they are in the system PATH
which you can set through the Advanced tab in Control Panel-System
or use path_prefix (see below).

No, don't do that. Simply add C:\cygwin\bin to the PATH as explained 
above.
You could set path_prefix as in the native version through LyX 
preferences.

The path_prefix should be written in posix (cygwin) syntax and I suggest
that you put as the first elements the following ones:

/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin

and then fill in whatever you like using ':' as a separator.
In this way you can put the epstopdf and convert scripts in /usr/local/bin
which is searched first.

Once you filled in path_prefix in LyX as I suggested above, I think that
you could also remove C:\cygwin\bin from the system PATH, but I have not
checked it (Hmm... may be it doesn't work...)

The View function doesn't work. It complains about missing
TeX class article when I first load the .lyx document and
C:\texmf~ is in my PATH. The Tex Information produces a
window but it contains no information.

I used mount -f C: /c  (not mount -f C: /cygdrive/c ?) as advised.

Path prefix had no entries which I thought was a bit strange.
I've tried both of these in Path prefix
C:/reader7/Reader/acrord32
/c/reader7/Reader/acrord32

I've tried both of these absolute paths in File formats Viewer
C:/reader7/Reader/acrord32
/c/reader7/Reader/acrord32
originally it just said Viewer pdflatex, acrord32, but didn't work.

The Working directory automatically generated by LyX is
C:/Cygwin/.xemacs

The tmp directory generated by LyX is C:/Cygwin/tmp

I also tried putting C:/texmf/miktex/bin in Path prefix
and also the path to article.cls which is in ~/.../base
separated from each other with a :  also :C:/reader7/etc

I'm not sure what is broken because of being a Pre version.
For instance Import Latex is missing, it just has text imports.
The spellchecker starts checking the second misspelled word.

Anyway your instructions are proven to work. A new user
can search the archives and find clarifications in this thread.
I've remembered to modify, apply, save, and Reconfigure.

My favorite test file, sample.lyx, does convert eps and jpeg,

Don't know about 1.3.5, but in 1.3.7 you just change Layout - Document 
- Language - Quote Style to double and select text from the 
drop-down Type list.  If that's not a feature in 1.3.5, perhaps you 
should consider upgrading (which I recommend in any case).

Enrico's batch file (as modified below) should fix it for you.  If not, 
as a workaround, if you export your document to LaTeX and then run 
pdflatex against it, you should get the right result; it's only 
View-PDF (pdflatex) that screws up (because the .tex file written to 
the temp directory has mangled file names that start with C:/ (or 
whatever your drive letter is), and they apparently get misinterpreted 
by something (babel?).


Since you're using pdflatex, I think you will need to modify Enrico's 
batch file as follows.  First, do not name it latex.bat; you could call 
it pdflatex.bat, but I recommend something like mypdflatex.bat. 
Second, edit the last line to read pdflatex.exe %1.  Finally, inside 
LyX, go to Edit-Preferences-Converters, highlight the LaTeX-PDF 
(pdflatex) entry, change the Converter: line to read mypdflatex $$i, 
click Modify and then Save.  Hopefully that will fix the problem.

Uh? It seems that you have not set the HOME variable. LyX/Cygwin uses
HOME instead of USERPROFILE. Perhaps I should patch the sources such

Perhaps normal for Cygwin/Linux but you can see all these
files and their paths with Uwe or Angus native LyXwin. Or

Uh? It seems that you have not set the HOME variable. LyX/Cygwin uses
HOME instead of USERPROFILE. Perhaps I should patch the sources such
that USERPROFILE is used as a fallback if HOME is not set.
For the moment, you can fix this by adding the HOME var in the same

I used to have Xemacs for Cygwin installed. I set the HOME variable
to C:\Cygwin\.xemacs for it. I now have another version of Xemacs set
to HOME there also so if I change it I have to move init.el files etc.

Oops. No acrord32 is short for the acrord32.exe I just noticed this
after trying it and it failed. So I tried :/c/reader7/Reader/ which didn't
work. I just tried it without the trailing slash /, and it didn't work.

I start LyX with an icon linked to C:\cygwin\usr\local\bin\LyX-1.4.0.exe
and it gives me an error message Locale en_US could not be set
which has never mattered in the past. My language is set to English in LyX.
The Locale error follows after the LyX will not be able to produce output.

I've watched Reconfigure process. It says yes to finding pdflatex
and acrord32 and gsview32. I don't have any Viewers, no DVI or
Postscript. I added :/c/gs/gs8.51/bin:/c/ghostgum/gsview to Path
prefix and turned on Instant Preview. No previewers. Before when
I had this problem I ran sh configure from lyx/resources/lyx I'll
give that -dbg init a try 

Display problems, LyX-Qt on Mac

Hi,

I've happily been using LyX on Mac under X11 with the xforms
interface for years now, and once in a while I try out the Qt
interface to see if it has gotten any better. I just tried fink's lyx-
qt 1.4.0pre5 and can't figure out how to access the lyx command line
(no meta key), and many important xemacs and aqua keybindings
requiring the meta key also appear to be inaccessible. All this is no
problem at all in xforms, where the Apple key works fine as Meta (set
up in ~/.Xmodmap).

Then I tried LyX-Qt for Mac, which is available as binary in version
1.3.7. That's almost useable.
However, in both of these LyX versions, I have problems with the
screen display of certain math glyphs. It's worse in fink's X11
version, so I'm attaching a screen shot below.
But in LyX-Qt/Mac, I also get into trouble whenever I try to get a
\iint or \oiint displayed. Here, by displayed I mean the screen
display without instant preview (I like to have the math equations
stand out in their own blue color instead of blending in with the
text). These integral symbols seem to be mapped onto the wrong
positions of the wasysym font in the symbols configuration file. Note
that in X11 lyx-qt, the \iint and \oiint symbols are actually
displayed correctly (in black, not in blue, for some reason...)
whereas the \int, \sum, \prod symbols appear with a dropped baseline.
So right now I'm sticking with lyx-xforms under Apple's X11, because
everything there works smoothly for me... maybe someone here has the
solution to these issues - I sure would like to move up to the new
features, but not at the expense of a broken screen display.

So no it is not dynamic, I use this copy and paste every time
which is free of typos. But, I do have Qt3-C++/-bin/-devel all installed.
I am not sure anymore what is default and what I chose. Seems to me
that I also installed some developer tools like bison and flex. So I will
uninstall these three Qt3s and see what happens. Nope, didn't work.
There was no /usr/lib/qt3 before I recently created it to accomodate
the script error report. I found it here:

$ sh link_includes
link_includes: line 6: cd: /usr/lib/qt3/include: No such file or directory
link_includes: line 20: cd: private: No such file or directory

No, it's important to get correct hyphenation, translation of strings such as 
"figure", "table", "chapter" etc., and -- especially in the case of FRENCH 
AFAIR -- correct typography (i.e. a small space after quotation marks).

The latter is what is causing your problems BTW.

Hi!

You can do the following. Use Bibtex as usual and when your document is 
finished (i.e. all your references have been included) choose one of the 
two following options.
If you know the directory where LyX stores temporary working files, then 
click on View->DVI. After that go to the LyX's temp directory. You will 
see the generated .tex file plus other files, among then the generated 
.bbl file. Open that file, copy its content and paste it (as external 
selection) into an ERT box at the end of your LyX file. Remove the 
"Bibtex Generated Bibliography" box and that's it!
If you donæt know LyX's temp directory, just export as Latex, compile to 
get the .bbl file and do as explained before.

So that's the problem. I investigated a bit and found that qt3-devel
is the culprit. It installs the following two files:

/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.csh
/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.sh

this files are automatically sourced when tcsh or sh are started, and
guess what? They define QTDIR to /usr/lib/qt3.
You need not uninstalling those packages, simply move out of the way
those two files by renaming them as

/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.csh.no
/etc/profile.d/qt3-devel.sh.no

Really it suffices that the extension be different from .csh or .sh.
Time to update the wiki page, I guess...

I see that you use /cygdrive/c to access drive C:. If you issue the
following command (you need to do it only once as the results are
stored in a mount table):

mount -f C: /c

then you can write /c/path instead of /cygdrive/c/path to access the
windows C:\path. Also, you don't need to write
"/cygdrive/c/cygwin/usr/local/qt-cygwin/lib" but simply
"/usr/local/qt-cygwin/lib" because when a path starts with "/" it
refers to the cygwin root which is at /cygdrive/c/cygwin, in your case.

Yes, it is a so simple patch after all. Simply add the lines marked
with a starting + . As you see in the patch, you should look around
line 95 in the file src/support/environment.C.

The margins are adjustable because they are meant to be. :-)
You can reduce them a little, but take care so it don't get ugly.
Also consider adjusting the top/bottom margins by the same
percentage as the side margins.

There is no single standard for the margins on A5 or any
other paper.  About 66 letters per line is considered
optimal.  More, and the reader gets trouble finding the next
line.  Less, and he has to move his eyes a lot, and you get
trouble with the line breaks.

A smaller font will also help, but may cause readability problems.

This can be done with a small custom .layout, such as
the one at the end of this message.  It is a custom document
type (mybook) that simply inherits everything from
scrbook (Koma-script book) and adds a smallcode
paragraph type that provides scriptsized code with no
extra left margin.

Put it in .lyx/layouts, use the "reconfigure" menu option, and
you may then use the "mybook" document class which supports
"smallcode" paragraphs.

If you want "mybook" based on something else than scrbook,
change the "\DeclareLaTeXClass" and "Input scrbook.layout"
in the beginning.

For a different fontsize, replace "scriptsize" with another size.

If you like the extra left/right margins LyX-Code provides,
change to LeftMargin MMM and RightMargin MMM.

Note that this file is for lyx-1.4, but doing the same
for lyx-1.3 is no harder.

I see that you use /cygdrive/c to access drive C:. If you issue the
following command (you need to do it only once as the results are
stored in a mount table):

mount -f C: /c

then you can write /c/path instead of /cygdrive/c/path to access the
windows C:\path. Also, you don't need to write
"/cygdrive/c/cygwin/usr/local/qt-cygwin/lib" but simply
"/usr/local/qt-cygwin/lib" because when a path starts with "/" it
refers to the cygwin root which is at /cygdrive/c/cygwin, in your case.

convert scripts in their own directoy at the beginning of PATH.
Shouldn't I do something else to connect them to epstopdf.exe
in Miktex\texmf and C:\ImageMagick\convert.exe ? I don't
have Tetex installed and I think not Cygwin's ImageMagick.
It seems too easy!

Problem with hyperref and long names

Possibly this is not a lyx question but a latex one, but anyway, any answer 
will be greatly appreciated. I am trying to use hyperref to navigate my pfd 
document, but when I write long title names, hyperref is not able to break the 
line, and it gets out of the page. Is there any option in hyperref to avoid 
this situation? Or is any other package that manages this appropriately?

Yesterday I installed Wiki Wiki's port v. 1.3.7. I'm running Windows XP Polish 
version, 
which means I am using MS code page cp1250.

Soon after installation I found out that I am not able to input Polish 
characters from 
keyboard the way it is commonly done under all Windows system, i.e. by pressing 
and 
holding the right Alt key and then pressing the relevant standard key. Nothing 
happens when 
I do this. This functioned, however, in the previous port (ver. 1.3.5) by Ruurd 
Reitsma 
without any problems. (In the case of still earlier port by Claus Henschel I

had to produce my own special keyboard file.) This version seems to come with

I am fully aware of the possibily of creating keyboard bindings file or using

The PDF-bookmarks are restricted to one line. You can only set

- a short title
- or an alternative title that should be displayed as PDF-bookmark

LyX input character set is hardcoded to ISO 8859-1, version 1.5 of LyX

I tried exporting my lyx file as a latex file using File | Export | Latex. 
It appears to be carrying out the export, at least according to the status 
buffer, but I am unable to locate the file! Its not in the same directory. I 
looked in the lyx/tmp directory, and while there appear to be old 
conversions sitting there, there is nothing recent. I know this used to 
work, I haven't used Lyx in a few months, so i may be fogetting something. 
Can anyone help?

and lyx crashes with this message printed in the terminal

all. The cursor in LyX properly jumps to the appropriate row (though  
the screen doesn't move to that row, whether or not the "Cursor  
follows scrollbar" option is checked in Preferences > User Interface).

Because I often use may mac remotely thru an SSH tunnel - aqua apps 
can't do that (unless you use vnc or somesuch).

You should do nothing apart assuring that they are in the system PATH
which you can set through the "Advanced" tab in "Control Panel->System"
or use path_prefix (see below).

No, don't do that. Simply add C:\cygwin\bin to the PATH as explained 
above.
You could set path_prefix as in the native version through LyX 
preferences.

The path_prefix should be written in posix (cygwin) syntax and I suggest
that you put as the first elements the following ones:

/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin

and then fill in whatever you like using ':' as a separator.
In this way you can put the epstopdf and convert scripts in /usr/local/bin
which is searched first.

Once you filled in path_prefix in LyX as I suggested above, I think that
you could also remove C:\cygwin\bin from the system PATH, but I have not
checked it (Hmm... may be it doesn't work...)

The View function doesn't work. It complains about missing
TeX class "article" when I first load the .lyx document and
C:\texmf~ is in my PATH. The Tex Information produces a
window but it contains no information.

I used mount -f C: /c  (not mount -f C: /cygdrive/c ?) as advised.

Path prefix had no entries which I thought was a bit strange.
I've tried both of these in Path prefix
C:/reader7/Reader/acrord32
/c/reader7/Reader/acrord32

I've tried both of these absolute paths in File formats Viewer
C:/reader7/Reader/acrord32
/c/reader7/Reader/acrord32
originally it just said Viewer pdflatex, acrord32, but didn't work.

The Working directory automatically generated by LyX is
C:/Cygwin/.xemacs

The tmp directory generated by LyX is C:/Cygwin/tmp

I also tried putting C:/texmf/miktex/bin in Path prefix
and also the path to article.cls which is in ~/.../base
separated from each other with a :  also :C:/reader7/etc

I'm not sure what is broken because of being a Pre version.
For instance Import Latex is missing, it just has text imports.
The spellchecker starts checking the second misspelled word.

Anyway your instructions are proven to work. A new user
can search the archives and find clarifications in this thread.
I've remembered to modify, apply, save, and Reconfigure.

Don't know about 1.3.5, but in 1.3.7 you just change Layout -> Document 
-> Language -> Quote Style to double and select <> from the 
drop-down Type list.  If that's not a feature in 1.3.5, perhaps you 
should consider upgrading (which I recommend in any case).

Enrico's batch file (as modified below) should fix it for you.  If not, 
as a workaround, if you export your document to LaTeX and then run 
pdflatex against it, you should get the right result; it's only 
View->PDF (pdflatex) that screws up (because the .tex file written to 
the temp directory has "mangled" file names that start with "C:/" (or 
whatever your drive letter is), and they apparently get misinterpreted 
by something (babel?).


Since you're using pdflatex, I think you will need to modify Enrico's 
batch file as follows.  First, do not name it latex.bat; you could call 
it pdflatex.bat, but I recommend something like "mypdflatex.bat". 
Second, edit the last line to read "pdflatex.exe %1".  Finally, inside 
LyX, go to Edit->Preferences->Converters, highlight the LaTeX->PDF 
(pdflatex) entry, change the Converter: line to read mypdflatex $$i, 
click Modify and then Save.  Hopefully that will fix the problem.

Uh? It seems that you have not set the HOME variable. LyX/Cygwin uses
HOME instead of USERPROFILE. Perhaps I should patch the sources such
that USERPROFILE is used as a fallback if HOME is not set.
For the moment, you can fix this by adding the HOME var in the same
way you add the PATH var but in the user section. Set HOME to a folder
of your choice and then try launching LyX with the option "-dbg init"
to see what it thinks your home_dir is.

Perhaps normal for Cygwin/Linux but you can see all these
files and their paths with Uwe or Angus native LyXwin. Or
with Mingw build of LyX1.4.0_pre3. It is how I used to check
that LyX communicated with Miktex:texmf

Oops. No acrord32 is short for the acrord32.exe I just noticed this
after trying it and it failed. So I tried :/c/reader7/Reader/ which didn't
work. I just tried it without the trailing slash /, and it didn't work.

I start LyX with an icon linked to C:\cygwin\usr\local\bin\LyX-1.4.0.exe
and it gives me an error message "Locale en_US could not be set"
which has never mattered in the past. My language is set to English in LyX.
The Locale error follows after the "LyX will not be able to produce output."


After modifying path_prefix, save the preferences and *restart* LyX.

I've watched Reconfigure process. It says yes to finding pdflatex
and acrord32 and gsview32. I don't have any Viewers, no DVI or
Postscript. I added :/c/gs/gs8.51/bin:/c/ghostgum/gsview to Path
prefix and turned on Instant Preview. No previewers. Before when
I had this problem I ran sh configure from lyx/resources/lyx I'll
give that -dbg 

Display problems, LyX-Qt on Mac

Hi,

I've happily been using LyX on Mac under X11 with the xforms
interface for years now, and once in a while I try out the Qt
interface to see if it has gotten any better. I just tried fink's lyx-
qt 1.4.0pre5 and can't figure out how to access the lyx command line
(no meta key), and many important xemacs and aqua keybindings
requiring the meta key also appear to be inaccessible. All this is no
problem at all in xforms, where the Apple key works fine as Meta (set
up in ~/.Xmodmap).

Then I tried LyX-Qt for Mac, which is available as binary in version
1.3.7. That's almost useable.
However, in both of these LyX versions, I have problems with the
screen display of certain math glyphs. It's worse in fink's X11
version, so I'm attaching a screen shot below.
But in LyX-Qt/Mac, I also get into trouble whenever I try to get a
\iint or \oiint displayed. Here, by "displayed" I mean the screen
display without instant preview (I like to have the math equations
stand out in their own blue color instead of blending in with the
text). These integral symbols seem to be mapped onto the wrong
positions of the wasysym font in the symbols configuration file. Note
that in X11 lyx-qt, the \iint and \oiint symbols are actually
displayed correctly (in black, not in blue, for some reason...)
whereas the \int, \sum, \prod symbols appear with a dropped baseline.
So right now I'm sticking with lyx-xforms under Apple's X11, because
everything there works smoothly for me... maybe someone here has the
solution to these issues - I sure would like to move up to the new
features, but not at the expense of a broken screen display.

I could not reproduce that (maybe you could post a minimal LyX file
showing the behaviour somewhere), but make sure you have enabled T1 as
fontencoding (I think it's in the preferences, but I don't have a LyX
here, if unsire export your file to latex and look for a line
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}).
