Preserving math format with copy/paste between lyx windows
Hello -- I'm running lyx 1.4.3 on Windoze. It's a simple matter to copy paste between two Lyx windows, but when I copy a section of text that includes math mode formulas then the mathematics appears as regular text (using the paste external selection option, or ctrl-V). Am I doing something wrong or is it simply not possible to copy/paste between Lyx windows and preserve math-mode portions? Thanks, Alex __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Re: LyX 1.4.3-4 DVI Error on Windows XP
Hi! I have experience the same problem, although in another context. I do not manage to reproduce it always, but somehow it works like this: 1) Open a DVI preview 2) Change a figure in the document and run update DVI 3) Before the update is finished, I go to the YAP application (and maybe back again to Lyx and back to Yap...) Then, sometimes I get an error message in YAP: Permission denied: C:\temp\Lyx\lyx_tmpdir3684a03764\lyx_tmpbuf2\myfile.dvi And sometimes I get the reported error in Lyx: Converting from dvi2 to dvi Calling python -tt C:/tools/latex/LyX1.4.3/Resources/scripts/clean_dvi.py myfile.dvi tmpfile.out Error: Cannot convert file Maybe a problem with the new version of YAP shipped with Miktek 2.5? In general my experience is that everything goes slower when previewing DVI? Is it just my case? dvi and dvips pbs with lyx1.4.3 on mac ppc
I have two peculiar problems with exporting a document, which may be related: 1. when exporting to (or viewing) ps2pdf I get An error occurred whislt running dvips -t a4 -o 'name.ps' 'na (where the input filename is incomplete, but I don't think that's the problem) and to pdf output is produced. I note that upon checking in /tmp/lyx_tmpdir.../lyx_tmpbuf.../ I find no dvi file there. 2. when exporting to dvi, I get in my working dir a temporary eps file corresponding to a figure in the document, but no dvi file. Shouldn't that file go into the lyx tmp dir? the same file is produced in the lyxx tmpdir when exporting to pdflatex On the other hand, exporting (and viewing) to pdflatex works ok and it would be nice if there were a kbd shortcut for it. Re: export to .eps
Paul, Thank you so much for your valuable advice. In fact this seems to be the only way to handle many equations at the same time. One of my colleagues gave me this idea which also works fine: 1) Export from LyX to dvi (say eq0.dvi) 2)in the command prompt write: dvips -E -o eq0.eps eq0.dvi you get the eps file with the correct bounding box. Re: LyX with JabRef
I do not exactly know what is your problem. Maybe the answers from Paul and Richard solved your problem. However, from your explanation I feel you have a problem with the citation's interface. Is that? Note that there are two windows in that interface: LyX: Citation and LyX: Add citation; The first one shows the citations you have selected to insert. This window might be totally empty if you have not selected anything. To select a reference you have to click on the Add button. Then the second window appears. This window should show the list of references available in your .bib file. Nicolás Richard Heck wrote: Paul A. Rubin wrote: Michael Chen wrote: Hi, I once succeeded on using the recommended method: insert JabRef bib file, and then insert Citation, and then I see a very conveninent list of citations to choose from. However it only works for a while, and I am not able to see the list of citations any more. Any hints? I can't swear it applies here, but problems with .bib files frequently seem to track back to a broken/illegally formatted reference within the .bib file. I use JabRef, and AFAIK a .bib file built in JabRef acts just like a .bib file built by a text editor. So the first thing I would look into would be the possibility of a bad reference. You might try copying the .bib file and then deleting half the entries. If it still doesn't work, pare down the half you kept; if it does work, switch to the other half. Iterate ad nauseum. Another option is to compile the LaTeX manually. If there's an error in the .bib file, it'll be reported by BibTeX, and that can help you track it down. Yet another option is to open the .bib file in a decent LaTeX editor, one that provides enough syntax highlighting to help you find matching brackets. Richard

Probably has me confused with a spammer. I found the temp directory where the .pdf file is stored and I see .pdf's for each of the images in my document. However, they are empty boxes too. The strange thing is the eps charts are being rendered in LyX correctly, just not in any of the pdf outputs. Is this a MiKTex/pdflatex issue? I'll try to pdf my charts separately in the meantime. Hard to say. The in-the-GUI display is AFAIK done by LyX (directly or through a Python script) calling ImageMagick to convert the graphic from EPS to PPM. Using View-PDF (pdflatex), LyX copies the .eps file to the temp directory and calls (I think through a Python script, but it probably does not matter) the ImageMagick convert function to convert from EPS to PDF. ImageMagick in turn will use a delegate function from Ghostscript. So I'm wondering if maybe ImageMagick is not set up to call the delegate correctly (or if there is a problem with Ghostscript). Assuming for the moment that ImageMagick is on your command path, what happens if you open a DOS shell where the figure lives and run convert figure_equity_vol_smile.eps figure_equity_vol_smile.pdf there? Do you get a correct PDF of the figure, or does IM spit up an error? /Paul

When exporting (as opposed to viewing), LyX generates the exported product in the work directory, including any necessary auxiliary files. If you are including an EPS image in a DVI file, the DVI file does not contain a copy of the image, just a reference to an external EPS file. So LyX puts both the EPS and DVI files in the work directory. In contrast, when you export to PDF, a copy of the image is embedded directly in the PDF, so only the PDF file (not the EPS file) needs to go in the work directory -- but a temporary copy of the EPS file is needed in the temp directory so that it can be embedded in the PDF output. On the other hand, exporting (and viewing) to pdflatex works ok and it would be nice if there were a kbd shortcut for it. Locate the bind file you use in the Resources/bind folder under the LyX installation directory, and copy it to the bind folder under your home directory. (If you are not sure which binding you are using, check Tools-Preferences...-Look and feel-User interface-Bind file.) Open it with a text editor, and at the bottom insert something like the following: \bind S-C-F buffer-view pdf2 This would bind control-shift-F to View-PDF (pdflatex) on a Windows machine. I'm not sure, but I think Control on a Windows PC corresponds to the Command key (?) on a Mac. Anyway, pick a key combination not already in use. Also, it would be a good idea to check Tools-Preferences...-File formats to verify that PDF (pdflatex) is designated pdf2 on your machine. (That is the default, but it could hypothetically have been changed.) Hope that helps, Paul

Re: On Text Wrap Float
Nicolás wrote: Hi! When I use insert a figure using Text Wrap Float, the text only surrounds correctly the graphic element, but not the caption (i.e. the text overlaps with the caption). How can I avoid this? Thanks I assume it was one of the ends of the caption that extended into the text beside it. Using a shorter caption, or wider room for the wrap float is obvious. But I guess you don't want that. Have you tried inserting manual linebreaks (ctrl+enter) in the caption? Or inserting a minipage in your text wrap float, and put everything, including the caption, inside that minipage? The text wrap thing is something I consider only half-finished in latex - it don't work very well. Sometimes it just disappear too. Helge Hafting
How to remove "Date" in the title page, book format
Hi, I use lyx 1.3.6 on suse 10.1 and I have a 200 page document in book format When I compile the document there is the "title page" with the "Title", "Author", "Date", etc, but I want to remove "Date". Does somebody how to do this in LyX ? Thanks. Horacio.
Re: How to remove "Date" in the title page, book format
... well that's easy, simply add \date{} to the preamble in the document settings. Re: LyX with JabRef
I do not exactly know what is your problem. Maybe the answers from Paul and Richard solved your problem. However, from your explanation I feel you have a problem with the citation's interface. Is that? Note that there are two windows in that interface: "LyX: Citation" and "LyX: Add citation"; The first one shows the citations you have selected to insert. This window might be totally empty if you have not selected anything. To select a reference you have to click on the "Add" button. Richard

Forcing LyX master document to reformat output?
Dear all, how can one force LyX to reformat the LaTeX (pdfLatex) output of a master document which contains only a few include statements? I am used to working with a top documents that simply lists, as includes, the various filenames of the single sections or chapters. All the editing os done in the included files. When I select the View Pdf option in the master document, however, LyX not always updates the pdf output to reflect the editing changes. Is there any way top force a recompile of included files? I see this as well (this is a bug). > Is there any way top force a recompile of > included files? I'm forcing it by doing some arbitrary change in the master document (usually adding or deleting a character in a comment or note inset). Jürgen
Re: .eps image not displaying in pdf document
kmailuk wrote: I saw your message in the digest. (I am only a digest subscriber. Maybe I should subscribe to the live mailing list. But please cc me if you reply to this email.) Ok. Couldn't do that until you e-mailed me directly. I read to the list through the GMANE archive, which mangles sender addresses, and recently it's been refusing to forward direct replies from me. Using View->PDF (pdflatex), LyX copies the .eps file to the temp directory and calls (I think through a Python script, but it probably does not matter) the ImageMagick convert function to convert from EPS to PDF. ImageMagick in turn will use a "delegate" function from Ghostscript. So I'm wondering if maybe ImageMagick is not set up to call the delegate correctly (or if there is a problem with Ghostscript). Assuming for the moment that ImageMagick is on your command path, what happens if you open a DOS shell where the figure lives and run >convert figure_equity_vol_smile.eps figure_equity_vol_smile.pdf there? Do you get a correct PDF of the figure, or does IM spit up an error? /Paul
Re: dvi and dvips pbs with lyx1.4.3 on mac ppc
Andrea Moneti wrote: I have two peculiar problems with exporting a document, which may be related: 1. when exporting to (or viewing) ps2pdf I get "An error occurred whislt running dvips -t a4 -o 'name.ps' 'na (where the input filename is incomplete, but I don't think that's the problem) and to pdf output is produced. I note that upon checking in /tmp/lyx_tmpdir.../lyx_tmpbuf.../ I find no dvi file there. Lack of a DVI file is certainly problem. Does the LaTeX log indicate any problems generating the DVI? (Probably not if the same document works with pdflatex, but I've learned not to jump to conclusions.) Can you view the document with View->DVI or export it to DVI successfully? 2. when exporting to dvi, I get in my working dir a temporary eps file corresponding to a figure in the document, but no dvi file. Shouldn't that file go into the lyx tmp dir? the same file is produced in the lyxx tmpdir when exporting to pdflatex I'm not positive, but I think this is normal behavior. I happen to agree; I use View->PDF (pdflatex) more often than I use View->DVI, since much of my work is in beamer presentations. In any event, you can create one yourself. Locate the bind file you use in the Resources/bind folder under the LyX installation directory, and copy it to the bind folder under your home directory. (If you are not sure which binding you are using, check Tools->Preferences...->Look and feel->User interface->Bind file.) Open it with a text editor, and at the bottom insert something like the following: \bind "S-C-F" "buffer-view pdf2" This would bind control-shift-F to View->PDF (pdflatex) on a Windows machine. I'm not sure, but I think Control on a Windows PC corresponds to the Command key (?) on a Mac. Anyway, pick a key combination not already in use. Also, it would be a good idea to check Tools->Preferences...->File formats to verify that PDF (pdflatex) is designated pdf2 on your machine. (That is the default, but it could hypothetically have been changed.) Hope that helps, Paul
