This is an awesome addition to the LyX library and this alone makes the move to

Cool, really!

I am in a process of convincing my team mates to use LyX for
documentation. The guys all use windows. I'm not really a windows
man, thus the question: What RCS do you recommend? I have downloaded
the zip file from the gnu site and copied all the bins to C:\windows,
but LyX didn't see the binaries. Next, I have added this dir to the

FYI: I used lyx-144-2-bundle.exe to install LyX, worked like a charm :-)

Not much of a log to mail. After reaching the line Debugging 'debug', the
next line just reads Checking wether LyX is running in place... no, followed
by that the application requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way.

This is followed by the usual report this problem to MS popup, which just

problem with tex4ht

2007-02-21 Thread Ares

Hello everyone,

I wrote a nice user manual for my application in LyX and I wanted to
translate it to html to inlcude it direclty in the user interface (I
know pdf with hyperref can do wonderful things but I want to play with
html now).

After some trouble (always the same problem of compatibility of
hyperref package) I manage to have a good html by:
1. exporting foo.lyx to foo.tex (plain)
2. latex foo
3. bibtex foo
3. latex foo
4. latex foo
3. htlatex foo html

except that figures look very bad (not all) as I suspect they are
converted from png to eps to jpg and resized as well somewhere. but
this is not my concern now.

I try to do:

htlatex foo html,2,frames

as suggested in the tex4ht doc
(file:///C:/Programmi/MiKTeX%202.5/doc/tex4ht/tex4ht/mn.html) to
break up the output into separate web pages, in accordance to the two
top sectioning levels of the document and to place the content and
table of contents in separate frames.

what I get is a single file, in one single frame.

The funny thing is that I managed to achive the desired result some
time ago on the same machine. by the way I'm on WinXP, LyX 1.4.3,
freshly updated MiKTeX 2.5

I attach a rar file with a simple example (lyx, tex files etc)

Any suggestion? thanks in advance for your supprort.

Diego

Replace \newcounter{exemplo} with something like

It will now be reset whenever chapter is incremented,
you probably want that. (Or if you don't - drop the [chapter] part)

\ref will use \theexemplo to print the number, so
redefine it something like
\renewcommand{\theexemplo}{\thechapter [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Now your references will print 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and so on for
exemplos in chapter 2.

Document-specific layout extensions

2007-02-21 Thread Daniel Lohmann

Hi,

I am looking for way to extend or customize the LyX layout (such as the
available styles) for a particular document only. While I know how to tweak
layouts in the global or user-specific Resources/layouts/ folder, I would
like to avoid this, as the document is shared with a couple of other users
and I don't want them to have to modify their personal configuration. The
document (which otherwise uses just standard classes and a standard layout)
should be editable out of the box.

From what I have found so far, this does not seem to be possible with 1.4.x.

LyX already offers means for document-specific extensions to the LaTeX
preamble. It would be just consequent to provide something similar for
document-specific extensions to the layout as well.

One possibility might be to look up .layout and .inc files in the documents
path first, something like a document-specific LyxUser directory.
Everything not found there is then looked up in the ordinary LyxUser
directory and finally in the global LyxDir.

Any plans in this direction for 1.5?
Or am I missing something?

You are not the first one who requests this. It makes a lot of sense, and
there is even a bugzilla entry IIRC. The only reason why this is not
implemented yet is that nobody volunteered so far.

I would suggest to create a layout file that you ship together with your
document. It should have a new name, so that users can simply copy it into
their resource directory and reconfigure LyX. If you change the file and
ship an update then the reconfigure step is not even necessary, it is
enough to overwrite the old file with the new version.

Any plans in this direction for 1.5?

No. 1.5 is in feature freeze mode to get the remaining bugs ironed out.

LyX 1.4.4, current Windows versions

2007-02-21 Thread Tom Schlangen
Hi LyX List,

after another afternoon of fruitless experimenting with both official and
alternate installers to fight several bugs I reported here, I just decided to
downgrade all W2K and XP machines to the official 1.4.3-5 setup (but leaving
all newer-than-installer-version MikTex and ImageMagick packets as is).

As per current state of knowledge, the downgrade was successful on all W2k and
XP machines, leaving a productive environment that installed and works just as
expected.

I will keep a single machine with a backup'd and absolutely clean XP image
(XPpro, German version, MS registered, only network card plus MS networking
client plus TCP/IP protocol drivers plus about 70 official MS service packs as
were available per today) installed for further trials of upcoming v1.44
Windows version installers. I will report on the outcome, as time permits.

Wow! This file should be present on your system by default. You are the first one since 1.5 years

But anyway, I'll include this in the next release.

So, both installers seem to have problems related to either a msvcr80.dll or
msvcr71.dll, on the same machine.

What msvcr80.dll problem do you have with LyXWinInstaller? I ship a correct
version of this file.

Second problem:

The installer did *not* install the new ImageMagick, although it correctly
stated (at the beginning of the installation process) that this package will be
installed. Maybe this is a follow-up error to the first one, but I don´t know.

That means that you don't have a folder in LyX's installation folder named

In this particular example we had 2^Q. Both the 2 and the Q may be

may be created manually by creating the math, then change the 2 and the Q
to textrm individually. This is the userfriendly way, but maybe it

stupid layout. The same look should be available with mathrm . . .

In LyX 1.4.4, 2^Q in an mbox now no longer breaks the LaTeX run,
however if we type Cntl-M Cntl-M \phi we get:
 1) Something that looks exactly like $\phi$ on the screen.
 2) Something ($\mbox{\phi}$) that produces obscure LaTeX errors as
discussed previously in this thread.

My suggestion is that we make it obvious that we are no longer in
plain math mode. In a mbox, typing \ should result in
textbackslash on screen and \ in the dvi/ps/pdf.

As it stands the user has 3+ ways of entering a \ in an mbox, the
\ key, the Cntl-L key and the GUI TeX button. If the user really
wants to enter a TeX command in an mbox, the user can still press
Cntl-L or TeX to get a TeX \.

Likewise copying a \phi symbol into a mbox should result in \phi
as ASCII text in the PDF, just as if we had pasted the \phi symbol
completely outside any math-mode environment.

For consistency, I would also suggest that we replace '^'s with
\textasciicircum{} in mboxes, just like we do in all other non-math
environments.

LyX crashes. Windows, 1.4.3 (was: RCS on Windows)

2007-02-21 Thread André Bonhôte

Hi

It's really a pity that LyX/Win doesn't work as good as LyX/Mac ...
got a crash today, reproducable:

1 - Create a new document
2 - Activate Change Tracking
3 - Write some lines
4 - Accept all changes
5 - Write some more lines
6 - Repeat steps 4 5
7 - Boom.

See the screenshots here: http://flickr.com/photos/rclkrtrzckr/sets/
72157594549712498/

(FlickR is dead slow at the moment, please be patient.)

Actually, I stepped back to 1.4.3 from 1.4.4 because the latest
version crashed when I wanted to go to Document - Settings - LaTeX
Preamble in one of my existing documents. I didn't track this
further, just installed 1.4.3 :-/

I am not happy at all with this. I'm in the middle of a LyX Promo
Tour right now, I have to convince my bosses and team mates. But I
can't with these crashes. I have promised RCS, because it works on my
Mac, but it doesn't on Win. That's not really good.

Which one is the most stable version of LyX? Would it make sense to
go for 1.3.x?

Cheers

Not much of a log to mail. After reaching the line Debugging 'debug', the

problem with tex4ht

Any suggestion? thanks in advance for your supprort.

redefine it something like

From what I can see, the answer is no. It is a family of printers, not just

one printer. Sometimes HP uses the lower end product of a family, strips it
down (even further) and sells it as a regional designed product for latin
america or africa or any other poor country. Maybe that's the case for your
C3100. Try the C3110 drivers.

Re: Document-specific layout extensions

2007-02-21 Thread Georg Baum
Am Mittwoch, 21. Februar 2007 18:02 schrieb Daniel Lohmann:
 Hi,

I am looking for way to extend or customize the LyX layout (such as the
available styles) for a particular document only. While I know how to
tweak
layouts in the global or user-specific Resources/layouts/ folder, I would
like to avoid this, as the document is shared with a couple of other
users
and I don't want them to have to modify their personal configuration. The
document (which otherwise uses just standard classes and a standard
layout)
should be editable out of the box.

From what I have found so far, this does not seem to be possible with
1.4.x.

That is true.

LyX already offers means for document-specific extensions to the LaTeX
preamble. It would be just consequent to provide something similar for
document-specific extensions to the layout as well.

One possibility might be to look up .layout and .inc files in the
documents
path first, something like a document-specific LyxUser directory.
Everything not found there is then looked up in the ordinary LyxUser
directory and finally in the global LyxDir.

I think there is a bug in LyX itself that causes the startup crashes.

may be created manually by creating the math, then change the 2 and the Q
to textrm individually. This is the userfriendly way, but maybe it

Hi

It's really a pity that LyX/Win doesn't work as good as LyX/Mac ...

1 - Create a new document
2 - Activate Change Tracking
3 - Write some lines
4 - Accept all changes
5 - Write some more lines
6 - Repeat steps 4 5
7 - Boom.

I'm in the middle of a LyX Promo

can't with these crashes. I have promised RCS, because it works on my

Which one is the most stable version of LyX? Would it make sense to
go for 1.3.x?

Thanks Richard. You are right, and now my layout works almost well.

The remanent problem is that when making a cross reference of an "exemplo" it
apears only a number, corresponding to the exemplo counter. Ex:

But I would like that the number of the chapter were also writen. Ex:

Something lacks, but what?

Not much of a log to mail. After reaching the line "Debugging 'debug'", the
next line just reads "Checking wether LyX is running in place... no", followed
by that the application requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way.

This is followed by the usual "report this problem to MS" popup, which just

problem with tex4ht

Hello everyone,

I wrote a nice user manual for my application in LyX and I wanted to
translate it to html to inlcude it direclty in the user interface (I
know pdf with hyperref can do wonderful things but I want to play with
html now).

After some trouble (always the same problem of compatibility of
hyperref package) I manage to have a good html by:
1. exporting foo.lyx to foo.tex (plain)
2. latex foo
3. bibtex foo
3. latex foo
4. latex foo
3. htlatex foo "html"

except that figures look very bad (not all) as I suspect they are
converted from png to eps to jpg and resized as well somewhere. but
this is not my concern now.

I try to do:

htlatex foo "html,2,frames"

as suggested in the tex4ht doc
(file:///C:/Programmi/MiKTeX%202.5/doc/tex4ht/tex4ht/mn.html) to
"break up the output into separate web pages, in accordance to the two
top sectioning levels of the document" and to "place the content and
table of contents in separate frames".

what I get is a single file, in one single frame.

The funny thing is that I managed to achive the desired result some
time ago on the same machine. by the way I'm on WinXP, LyX 1.4.3,
freshly updated MiKTeX 2.5

I attach a rar file with a simple example (lyx, tex files etc)

Any suggestion? thanks in advance for your supprort.

cross-references. Otherwise, the target remains whatever it was,
probably section, which is why you're seeing the "1".

Thanks Richard. You are right, and now my layout works almost well.

The remanent problem is that when making a cross reference of an "exemplo" it
apears only a number, corresponding to the exemplo counter. Ex:

. . . As we seen in exemple 3

But I would like that the number of the chapter were also writen. Ex:

. . . As we seen in exemple 2.3
(3rd example of the second chapter).

Something lacks, but what?

Replace \newcounter{exemplo} with something like
\newcounter{exemplo}[chapter]
It will now be reset whenever "chapter" is incremented,
you probably want that. (Or if you don't - drop the [chapter] part)

\ref will use \theexemplo to print the number, so
redefine it something like
\renewcommand{\theexemplo}{\thechapter [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Now your references will print 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and so on for
"exemplos" in chapter 2.

That looks strange. I don't know enough TeX to see what is going on here.
Maybe you ask on comp.text.tex?

If the figures are incorporated into the source with \includegraphics
instructions the conversions shouldn't occur and it would be a bug for
me to consider. Otherwise, some tex4ht configurations will be
needed.

Can you provide just the latex and log files in non-rar format (e.g.,
zipped or, better off, pointers to where the file can be downloaded
from the web).

Please, try the following:

\usepackage{hyperref}
\catcode`\#=11
\def\hashmark{#}
\catcode`\#=6
\def\@@hyperref#1#2#3{%
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]@one\\{#1}%

LyX/Mac 1.4.4 - old version

2007-02-21 Thread Peter Ljunglöf

Hi,

Yesterday (Feb 20) I downloaded the PPC version of LyX/Mac 1.4.4,
i.e. the file 'LyX-1.4.4-Mac-PPC-3.dmg'. Unfortunately, the LyX
application is still version 1.4.3. Not that I care that much, 1.4.3
is good too, but I thought someone would like to know...

caption style

2007-02-21 Thread John Hughes

I've been trying to alter the caption style by adding either:

\usepackage[small,bf]{caption}

or:

\usepackage{caption}
\renewcommand{\captionfont}{\small}
\renewcommand{\captionlabelfont}{\bfseries}

to the preamble, but it doesn't seem to work. I either get "undefined
control sequence" errors or simply no change in the document output.

Please help.

Thanks a lot Enrico, the \catcode trick did it :-)

Now the href links are created as they should. Even with the right-looking
link targets, navigation to the particualr page does still not work,
though. I think I will have to dive even deeper into the PDF format and

ask some PDF-related newsgroups about that.

Thanks again.

The
document (which otherwise uses just standard classes and a standard layout)
should be editable "out of the box".

Or am I missing something?

mathdesign

2007-02-21 Thread John Hughes

I was trying to change the typeface to Garamond using:

\usepackage[garamond]{mathdesign}

which seems to process ok, but when I try to open the resulting PDF it gives
an error message "The font 'GaramondNo8-Reg' contains a bad /BBox" and the
parts that are supposed to be bold or italic are medium and upright - this
includes letters in mathematical equations.

Is this package supposed to work in LyX and if so, what have I done wrong?

Thanks

John
