Oops, I just realized that I sent the LyX list the generic description. I
didn't mean to insult anyone's intelligence by telling what TeX, LaTeX and
LyX are, nor by the sentence "If you need to write documents, and want those
documents to be typeset uniformly and well, you should attend this
presentation." This happened because I sent the boilerplate announcement to
the LyX list.

LaTeX and LyX at tomorrow night's GoLUG meeting

2007-08-01 Thread Steve Litt
Hi all,

If any of you are in Central Florida, this might interest you...

I'm giving a presentation on TeX, LaTeX and LyX at tomorrow night's GoLUG
meeting. It's 7pm, 8/2/2007 at the Knowledge Shop at 1000 North Orlando
Avenue (17-92) Suite C in Corporate Square in Winter Park. In other words,
17/92 and Lee Road. Here's a map:

http://golug.a3b3.com/#location_knowledge_shop

TeX is a low level, Turing complete programming language, developed by Donald
Knuth for the purpose of typesetting, including typesetting of mathmatical
equations, tables and images. It's pretty easy to learn, and you'll get a
good start toward learning it at the presentation.

LaTeX is essentially a framework or macro set for TeX. It's most often dealt
with by finding pre-made packages to accomplish what you want. Examples will
be given at the presentation.

LyX is a graphical front end to LaTeX. Creation and modification of paragraph
and character styles in LyX requires LaTeX knowledge, which in turn requires
TeX knowledge. You'll see LyX in action, and you'll see some of my books
created with LyX.

If you need to write documents, and want those documents to be typeset
uniformly and well, you should attend this presentation.

Thanks

slightly outside the allocated area on all four sides. I tried using
both the letter and the letter (lettersize) option in Miktex
2.6 paper
format and also Us letter as paper size in Lyx option and reconfigure
Lyx every time when i have changed the options but the problem is
still
there.

When i used word for the same work and print the paper in a file and
generate the pdf using Gostview I don't have this problem.

Can someone please let me know where i am going wrong with Lyx or

Please look at TeX messages log, if you have overhaul hbox messages

Hi,

I tried to have a look at the log file i haven't work with Latex much so
i am not sure actually what's going on ( I am trying to learn latex as
i go along). As far as i see there is no massage about overhaul hbox
massage there is only one place where the warning is

Underfull \hbox (badness 1) in paragraph at lines 117--134

Which as i know should mean that Latex has to put extra space between
the words. the only other incidance of hbox is the command
\scratchbox=\box29 in th elog file. I have attached the log file just in
case if it makes more sense.

As for hyphenation i am not explicitly defining it but it is done
automatically. So word are getting split with "-" between the two parts.

I tried to use the hyphenat package by putting \usepackage{hyphenate}
just to see if it does stop hyphenation but for some reason that
doesn't do anything. I will check that again but as far as i thing in th
paper hyphenation should be enable otherwise there could be the change
that words might go out of the margin. I hope that this is right.

Thanks for the reply. Any other suggestion i am really stuck with this

OT: choosing typographic style for command-line Unix book?

2007-08-01 Thread Jeremy C. Reed

Off-topic:

Any suggestions on choosing a typographic style for command-line Unix
book?

For command line examples and console output, I use lyxcode with bold for
the text to be entered/typed by the user.

Within paragraphs, we use slanted text for mentions of Unix tools and path
(file or directory) names. We also use slanted text to refer to options in
menus too.

But sometimes within paragraghs we commands that could be run. I am
wondering if we should continue to use slanted text. My preference is to
use bold text for that.

Here is an example two paragraphs (notice that the "man 1 kill" command
which could be run is in bold):

Now let's see what type of work we can do from the Webmin interface.
Expand \textsl{System} and click on \textsl{Software Packages}, then the
\textsl{Package Tree} button. You should receive the graphical equivalent
of the \textsl{pkg\_info -a} command. Now click on one of your packages
to read its description and the date it was installed. Those who've been
around FreeBSD for a while may not be impressed, as this is the
equivalent of \textsl{pkg\_info -Dx}. Try clicking on the \textsl{List
Files} button. Ever install a port and wondered where it put everything
and what all it created on your FreeBSD system? Wonder no more, as you
now have a hyperlinked list of all the files that were installed with
that port, as well as their locations, size, and ownership.

Next try \textsl{Running Processes}. This is just a graphical output of
the \textsl{ps} command, but I love its layout. All running processes can
be sorted by PID, user, memory, and CPU. If you sort by PID, you'll
receive a tree-like structure, with every child process slightly to the
right of its parent process. Each process has a hyperlink to further
details about that process. If you need to send a signal to a process,
you can choose the type of signal from a drop-down menu. (Do a
\textbf{man 1 kill} to learn more about signals -- and never
\textsl{kill} a process if you don't know what that process does).

Also notice above I have the pkg_info commands in slanted text. Maybe they
should be in a bold. I am just want to be consistent and to be easy for
reading. I guess my goal should be that it is helpful to the reader
without the reader being distracted. Any opinions would be appreciated.

  Jeremy C. Reed

p.s. I have read probably over a hundred Unix or related books and it
seems each have their own style.

Any way to set these preferences globally on a site ?

After installing 1.5.0 on Solaris, I get fonts in the LyX window as simple serif
fonts, which are ugly.

I can easily turn these in my usual screen fonts using Tools->Preferences.

But the menu fonts are also ugly. How can I change them ?

Re: Improving images for printing?

2007-08-01 Thread John Pye
Hi Jeremy

I suspect that your problem will be coming from the fact that
screenshots are ~75-90 dpi, but that you are then printing them on a
page at something like 300 dpi. Normally this means that the images are
scaled up so that they have the right number of pixels on the page. This
means adding new pixels, which are added by interpolation, meaning that
your nice crisp screenshot images are ending up blurred.

The solution to this as far as I can tell is to resize the images up to
something close to 300 dpi using some tool *outside* LyX. In GIMP this
can be done using the Image->Scaling then selecting Interpolation->'None
(Fastest)' after entering a new pixel size.

I figure this will probably fix your problem -- please reply to the list
if you still have problems.

Possibly there is a better/automatic way to do this using Latex or LyX
configuration options. Someone else may be able to advise on that.
Normally, with photos and the like, this blurry kind of resizing is
probably more likely to be what you want.

Cheers
JP

Table paste bug?

2007-08-01 Thread Maria Gouskova
Dear LyX users,

I suspect that this is yet another table cut-and-paste bug in 1.5x.
This is LyX 1.5.0 on Mac OS X, MacTeX.

Cut something formatted and in instant preview from a table cell. When
the formatted text is pasted into another table cell, the formatting
is removed, and the text appears outside math mode. For example, cut a
math-mode-formatted \sigma and paste it into another table cell, and
it will appear as regular black text \sigma, no longer in math mode.
This does not happen in 1.4.4.

Also, cutting and pasting multiple cells no longer works as it did in
1.4.4--the selected text flatlines into a single cell.

Can anyone confirm?

Maria

Improving images for printing?

2007-08-01 Thread Jeremy C. Reed
I have a black and white book with about 30 images. Many are screenshots
of X11 clients or X displays. I had Lulu print-on-demand print a copy so I
could see the images and many were blurry.

I read at the Lulu website
(http://www.lulu.com/help/index.php?fSymbol=make_sure_pdf_prints_right)
the following:

- Do not downsample your images unless they are fully rasterized. If they
are fully rasterized and the DPI is greater than 300, downsample to 300
DPI.

- Image compression should be set to ZIP if you want lossless (no
artifacts/distortion-free) images. To reduce filesize, use JPEG -> High.

- If you are printing a color book that has black & white images in it,
the black & white images should have the colorspace set to grayscale.

- Leave the images' colorspace in their original profiles. Do not convert
CMYK to RGB or vice versa.

- Do not use CCITT or LZW compression. LZW compression creates multi-strip
images, which may show white lines when printed.

- Use ZIP encoding for grayscale images.

- The gamma of a grayscale image should be between 2.2 and 2.4.

- DPI should be between 300 and 600 DPI.

Any hints on doing any of this with pdflatex?

Most of my screenshots need to be remade, so any suggestions on doing it
correctly?

I think I saw some wiki pages about this, but a google search didn't help
me find them.

Also I hve a few charts I need to redraw. Would it be best to generate in
a tool that can export in PDF? And then import that in my book?
(In a previous book, I used EPS files that I created and exported with
inkscape.)

You are using a png graphic. Ordinary latex cannot deal with that format (only
pdflatex can). If you use LyX's graphic insertion method, LyX converts the
graphic to eps automatically before running latex.

Isn't the graphic imported natively? If it is imported as ERT, you need to add

What errors do you get? The ERT version works fine for me here (given that the

mapped incorrectly to fonts in normal mode or something.

Here's how it looks:

and how it should look:

Not really a major problem but is it a bug? Has anyone else seen this?

Karol.

Problems importing figure

2007-08-01 Thread Hans Kunkell

Hi!

I am importing a TeX-file into LyX 1.5.0 but have some problems with the
 graphics. The code is

\begin{floatingfigure}{0.5\columnwidth}%
\includegraphics{picture.png}
\caption{some text...}
\end{floatingfigure}%

which is the same as LyX produces when creating a text float (after
export and viewing the source code). When I import the code written
above the text becomes ERT and the image is shown. Creating a DVI causes
errors. Inserting the figure manually through LyX works great though.
Any idea how to get it work?

Hans Kunkell

I think you should add \input{qcircuit} in the document preamble, which is a
text box in setting window available in 'Document/Settings...' menu. But I
am speculating now and If am wrong plese someone correct me.
