Name of section and subsection in heading line?
Hello everybody, I am working on the layout of my diploma thesis at the moment and would like to display the title of every section (e.g. first page) and subsection (second page and then alternating) in the heading line of the document. The problem is not your installation of exam.cls. The Document Classes listed are layouts that have been created for the various latex classes for representation of the classes styles in the LyX Gui. Adding a document class to Mac LyX?
Hullo, I'm trying to add a document class to my mac LyX 1.5.3 install. However, I'm a bit puzzled as to how to make it show up. The package is "exam.cls". I have it in my LyX app folder and in the / sw/... folder as well. Yet, "exam" does not show up when I check in the Settings->Document Class pop-up menu. /sw/share/texmf-dist/tex/latex/exam/exam.cls /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/exam/exam.cls I've run "sudo texhash" and "Reconfigure" in LyX to no joy... TIA for any ideas you are able to provide, Y.

How to programmattically mark all "ssh" with a charstyle?
Hi all, I have a character style called "charcode", and would like to have every occurrance of the lower case word "ssh" have charstyle "charcode" applied to it. Is there a search and replace type way to do that from within LyX, or will I need to use Vim on the native LyX file? There are many, many occurrences of "ssh", and there are also many other specific strings that need to be universally marked with the charcode character style, so doing it manually is a poor alternative. I just saw, that aspell is from 2003, though the latest version from the aspell site is dated december 2006. Even though Word is wrt spell checking and grammar checking superior to LyX, it's absolutely no option. formatting text within a bibtex citation
I use Lyx 1.5.2 on XP with bibtex to write academic papers. I sometimes want to cite a reference as an example of a point I am making using the Latin expression *e.g*.. What I am going for is something like the following. Many researchers have said "blah blah blah" (*e.g.* Smith, 2005). When I insert a citation into Lyx, using Insert>Citation I have the option of putting in "Text Before" to appear before the citation. This is great...but I want that text to be in italics. Any thoughts on how to make that happen? Do I have to modify the bibtex .sty file? If so I have no idea how to do this. Seems like a small thing...but I have an adviser who is a stickler for that formatting convention in particular! Thanks for any pointers, Andrew

Thanks Paul,
I used your {} technique in my commandbold character style, which is often
applied inside my custom modified LyX-Code environment, and it worked
perfectly.
That being said, I'd *still* like to know how to save the current font, and
how to implement a stack, just for the sake of knowing.

PNG background
Hello, I've been using LyX for a few months and it wins with Word hands down. I don't even write letters in Word anymore! Just wanted to say a quick and BIG thank you to all of you who make it possible and support others in their editorial life. One little thing I haven't been able to figure out is making PNGs with transparency look nice, i.e. specifying white as the background colour instead of the default black. Is that something I can set in LyX or a setting in ImageMagick? PITA alert: If you copy the template .lyx file someplace and edit the
copy, you need to do one of the following:
a. delete the image and bibliography stuff; or
b. copy the image file and the two .bib files to the same location as
the copy you are editing; or
c. replace the references to them with absolute paths (pointing to
their location, presumably in the MiKTeX directory you made for the
style stuff).

It will be difficult to do what you want without offending the
conference's Style Police. You can try the following: in the preamble,
change
My Name Is Too Long
to
\parbox{2.5in}{My Name Is Too Long}
(fiddle with the 2.5in to get an appropriate width). This will throw
that author's entry out of whack with the others, though, unless you put
everyone in parboxes with an equal number of lines.
Also note that the tilde (~) used in names in the template is an
unbreakable space. If you don't want someone's name getting hyphenated,
you probably want to change the tildes to ordinary spaces, so that LaTeX
can break the line there.
You might also be able to shrink the font for the names, but I'm pretty
certain that would call down the wrath of the Style Police upon you.
Thirdly can I ask if there is anyway to keep figures and tables (especially
tables) from going over the column margins?
Split them into more tables with fewer columns each?
If you have individual columns that are particularly wide, assign them a
fixed width. That will allow LaTeX to wrap lines in those columns.
The only other approaches I know are to shrink the font in the table or
to put the table in a resizeable float (there was a tip about the latter
on the list a few months back). Again, that might or might not fly with
the Style Police.
Fourthly I am having major headaches forcing lyx to position diagrams and
tables and equations at the tops of pages. Yes I know there is a command in
the float properties but sometimes it is just plainly ignored. Is there a
rule that float position is governed by?
Beats me. I don't think I've ever had the position-at-top option fail me.

AFAIK it will also run with later versions but not with older ones. OO is available for Mac OSX Intel in English (US), French, German and Portuguese (Brazil).

Installing Norwegian spellchecker with LyX
I am not sure if this is reported before, but there seems to be a problem with the installer for the two Norwegian spellcheckers (Bokmål, Nynorsk) for Windows. The installer fails when trying to install. (Failing the CRC check presumably) Has anyone else experienced this problem? I even tried to run the installer with /NCRC command line parametre, but it fails with this as well. Regards, Jon

Going to Enchant is in the TODO list since before 1.5.0. I guess it won't happen before 1.6.0 unfortunately, at least not by me. Aspell is helpfull by showing compounds as alternatives e.g. "Konfiguration+Einstellungen" which will help you to decide whether the components are spelled right. AFAIK, no. There is a German grammar check available for OpenOffice, which you *might* be able to use for an end-check. Hi there everyone, I just installed aspell German to use it with LyX. In general the spell checking works quite well, but some things doesn't work as smoothly as with Microsoft Word 2003: for example compound words. In German you cannot compound arbitrary words to new words. For example "Rechenmaschine" is a valid compound word whilst "Rechnemaschine" is not, though "Rechne" and "Maschine" are German words. Some times you have got to insert a connecting "s" between two words to create a compound word: "Konfiguration" and "Einstellung" are German words, but the compound word is "Konfigurationseinstellung" (note the "s"). In the latter example, aspell thinks that the correct compound is wrong while it doesn't find a mistake in "Konfigurationeinstellung" (without an "s"). So, for German this compound setting seems to be pretty useless. But as we Germans tend to use a lot of compound words, it's still somehow a very important feature. Microsoft Word copes with our language rules very well. Another thing that I am missing compared to Word is a grammar checker. Writing long texts I often change sentences quite some times and sometimes the result doesn't make any sense as I see something different than I write. Thus, I would appreciate a grammer checker. Is aspell capable of checking (German) grammar? I hope some of you cannot only understand my problems but will also be able to provide a working solution. Best regards Dominik
