Size of preview image

2008-07-27 Thread Daniel Lohmann

Hi,

Is there any way to change the size LyX uses internally when creating
the bitmaps for preview images? In many cases, the default size of the
preview image is to small. I know that I can specify a preview scaling
factor in the graphics settings, however, that causes the *bitmap* to
be scaled -- which then becomes rather unreadable.

Ideally, Lyx would create a new preview bitmap when the scale settings
are changed. A maybe simpler way might be to create the bitmaps
internally for a 200% scale factor and scale them down on screen.

1.6.x Beta 4 bug -- section heading.

2008-07-27 Thread killermike
Is anyone else finding it impossible to start a new section heading in
LyX 1.6 beta 4? When I type some text and then try to select section
from the drop down, nothing happens. The paragraph type is not altered
but the section GUI does reflect my selection from the menu. At the
moment, I am using the work-around of setting the environment to a
paragraph and then decreasing the nesting depth.

I was unable to find any mention of this in bugzilla. If others can
confirm this problem, I'll add it.

This problem exhibits itself in new and existing documents under Windows
XP SP2. The problem goes away if I go back to Beta 3. Unfortunately, LyX
complains that the converter cannot read the documents that have been
saved under Beta 4.

Adjacent Figures

2008-07-27 Thread Rich Shepard

  While I thought that by using two minipages I could place two figures
side-by-side, they're not displaying properly. Perhaps someone here can help
me debug the problem.

  Here's the scenario:

  I defined a custom page size (tabloid, in landscape orientation) by
specifying the geometry package in the preamble:

\usepackage[paperwidth=17in,paperheight=11in,landscape]{geometry}

  All I want on the page are two flowcharts drawn with PSTricks. I put each
flowchart in its own \begin{minipage} ... \end{minipage}, but I have not
defined a \pspicture environment within the minipages. If I put an \hfill
between the two minipages, there is no difference.

  When I view the output in gv each flowchart is on a separate page.
Changing the gv page size to tabloid (and landscape) doesn't do any good.

  A clue stick will be much appreciated.

Lyx 1.5.2 errors on file that used to work

2008-07-27 Thread Tina Lamers
Hello,

I have several documents that ran fine on LyX 1.5.2 on Windows XP in
May. I got busy on something else for a few months and am now trying
to edit the same documents. I had problems after making changes so
reverted to the old versions and am still getting the following errors
when trying to use view/pdflatex or view/pstopdf:

LaTeX Error: Two \documentclass or \documentstyle commands.
Package doc Error: Character table corrupted.
Undefined control sequence.

The document is a 'report' type and I can't find any place in the
document that mentions document type again.
The corrupted characters seem to have something to do with a right
bracket } and tilde ~, but neither of those are in the document text.
I get the same errors regardless of which file I run and even when I
create a new document with only a chapter title. Does anyone have any
ideas on how to find the sources of the errors? Also, any insight on
why these files worked fine before but now will not create output?
Would I be better off trying to update LyX to see if that helps? If
so, what's the best way to upgrade to 1.5.5?

Thanks,
Tina Lamers

Difficulty with LyX-Code and Copystyle

2008-07-27 Thread Steve Litt
Hi all,

 Recession Relief Package
 http://www.recession-relief.US

Hi all,

I found a fix I can use locally, and a fix that could be made with the LyX
distribution. Let me start with the latter...

LyX-Code is defined in lyxdir/layouts/lyxmacros.inc thusly:

Style LyX-Code
MarginStatic
LatexType Environment
LatexName lyxcode
NextNoIndent  1
LeftMarginMMM
RightMargin   MMM
TopSep0.5
BottomSep 0.5
Align Left
AlignPossible Block, Left, Right, Center
LabelType No_Label
FreeSpacing   1
Preamble
\newenvironment{lyxcode}
{\begin{list}{}{
\setlength{\rightmargin}{\leftmargin}
\setlength{\listparindent}{0pt}% needed for AMS
classes
\raggedright
\setlength{\itemsep}{0pt}
\setlength{\parsep}{0pt}
\normalfont\ttfamily}%
 \item[]}
{\end{list}}
EndPreamble
Font
  Family  Typewriter
EndFont
End

Notice that the LaTeX environment, lyxcode, is defined within the LyX
environment definition, so if LyX-Code is mentioned twice, \lyxcode is
defined twice, which is an error.

To fix the problem, the developers could remove everything from Preamble to
EndPreamble in the LyX-Code definition, and put it after the Format 4 and
before any LyX style definitions. While you're at it, you might as well pull
the LaTeX definitions out of LyX environments Address and Right_Address,
because those will have the same problems with CopyStyle. Obviously, there
need be only a single Preamble/EndPreamble pair globally in this file.

It's nice and modular to put the LaTeX definition inside the LyX definition,
but doing so greatly reduces the value of CopyStyle, so I'd recommend against
it.

I didn't want to mess with the distribution, so I did the following locally,
within my layout file...

#
Preamble
\newenvironment{litt_lyxcode}
{\begin{list}{}{
\setlength{\rightmargin}{\leftmargin}
\setlength{\listparindent}{0pt}% needed for AMS classes
\raggedright
\setlength{\itemsep}{0pt}
\setlength{\parsep}{0pt}
\normalfont\ttfamily}%
 \item[]}
{\end{list}}

 OTHER LATEX STUFF GOES HERE
EndPreamble

Style litt_LyX-Code
MarginStatic
LatexType Environment
LatexName litt_lyxcode
NextNoIndent  1
LeftMarginMMM
RightMargin   MMM
TopSep0.5
BottomSep 0.5
Align Left
AlignPossible Block, Left, Right, Center
LabelType No_Label
FreeSpacing   1
Preamble
EndPreamble
Font
  Family  Typewriter
EndFont
End

Style  Code
CopyStyle litt_LyX-Code
End

Style  Codeinbox
CopyStyle litt_LyX-Code
End

Style  Codetext
CopyStyle litt_LyX-Code
End
#

In other words, I copied and pasted \lyxcode to \litt_lyxcode within my layout
file, and copied and pasted LyX-Code (minus the Preamble/EndPreamble section)
to litt_LyX-Code within my layout file, and then did CopyStyle on
litt_LyX-Code. It worked perfectly!

Thanks

FYI, you can also type 'math-macro ora 1' in the mini-buffer, then put
the cursor in the first of the two boxes in the created inset and type
'\#1' (omitting the quotes both times). The second box is irrelevant.
Does the same thing as what Richard suggested.

However, I'd be tempted to take a different route. Pick a key
combination you don't have much use for and bind it to 'math-insert
\overrightarrow'. Then whack that key combo while you're in a math
inset and type whatever your vectorizing under the arrow.

Yes, I can reproduce it with Safari. When you follow a link from the

http:/farm/pub/skins/lyx/lyx.css

The correct URI should be
http://www.lyx.org/farm/pub/skins/lyx/lyx.css

(so the base URI isn't added)
That's what causes the missing formating. Firefox is better at
guessing what you meant here, but it really is an error that appears
on all the other pages except for the lyx home page.

If you can list all the allowable characters including carriage return and/or
linefeed, then you (or a friend like me) could write a C program to read each
character, test it for inclusion in that set, and report on any characters
(character ascii/unicode value and position in the file) that aren't in the
set.

I know nothing about unicode, so I'd need to be brought up to speed on that

characters.

My MS Word to LyX conversion is more or less finished

2008-07-27 Thread Steve Litt
Hi all,

A couple days ago it took the entire day to change all the tables from markers
to real tables. It was a tough job.

Today I put in the 10 images into the book. What made it hard was that the old
images were object embbedded Micrografx Windows Draw images. MGX Windows Draw
was a wonderful program, probably better than Inkscape, but it's an orphan
running only on Windows, and my only Windows machine is a Pentium II300 with
128 MB of RAM.

Therefore, I had to reconstruct many of the images (they were diagrams) using
the dia program, running a conversion program to convert the dia to .png,
using Inkscape as the conversion mechanism.

One distressing effect was that the LyX book ballooned out to 370 pages from
the 309 in MS Word, even though I set the LyX margins about the same as the
(wide and tall) MS Word margins. In both books the font was 12point -- I
insist on all my books being 12point so that people with poor vision can read
them. I think the problem is LyX puts more space after headings than I like.
If that's a significant part of the problem, I can narrow that out in the
layout file.

Anyway, the mainmatter of the LyX book is essentially the same as the
mainmatter of the MS Word book, so as soon as I do a few final checks, I'll
begin making my 2008 revision of the book.

Thanks for all of your help.

It means the fonts LyX uses for math displays in the GUI aren't properly
installed under Windows. Check that a .\Resources\fonts directory
exists under your LyX program directory, and that it contains nine
TrueType font files (.ttf) and the BaKoMa4LyX font license. If not,
snag them here (ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/contrib/BaKoMa4LyX-1.1.zip)
and unpack them. Now crank up the Windows font applet (from the Control
Panel). If it shows any or all of those fonts installed, delete them in
the font applet. Then reinstall them from the LyX fonts directory.
Restart LyX and cross your fingers.

Is anyone else finding it impossible to start a new section heading in
LyX 1.6 beta 4? When I type some text and then try to select section
from the drop down, nothing happens. The paragraph type is not altered

moment, I am using the work-around of setting the environment to a
paragraph and then decreasing the nesting depth.

\usepackage[paperwidth=17in,paperheight=11in,landscape]{geometry}

Thanks,
Tina Lamers

 Steve Litt
 Recession Relief Package
 http://www.recession-relief.US

Hi all,

I found a fix I can use locally, and a fix that could be made with the LyX
distribution. Let me start with the latter...

LyX-Code is defined in lyxdir/layouts/lyxmacros.inc thusly:

Style LyX-Code
MarginStatic
LatexType Environment
LatexName lyxcode
NextNoIndent  1
LeftMarginMMM
RightMargin   MMM
TopSep0.5
BottomSep 0.5
Align Left
AlignPossible Block, Left, Right, Center
LabelType No_Label
FreeSpacing   1
Preamble
\newenvironment{lyxcode}
{\begin{list}{}{
\setlength{\rightmargin}{\leftmargin}
\setlength{\listparindent}{0pt}% needed for AMS
classes
\raggedright
\setlength{\itemsep}{0pt}
\setlength{\parsep}{0pt}
\normalfont\ttfamily}%
 \item[]}
{\end{list}}
EndPreamble

#
Preamble
\newenvironment{litt_lyxcode}
{\begin{list}{}{
\setlength{\rightmargin}{\leftmargin}
\setlength{\listparindent}{0pt}% needed for AMS classes
\raggedright
\setlength{\itemsep}{0pt}
\setlength{\parsep}{0pt}
\normalfont\ttfamily}%
 \item[]}
{\end{list}}

 OTHER LATEX STUFF GOES HERE
EndPreamble

Style litt_LyX-Code
MarginStatic
LatexType Environment
LatexName litt_lyxcode
NextNoIndent  1
LeftMarginMMM
RightMargin   MMM
TopSep0.5
BottomSep 0.5
Align Left
AlignPossible Block, Left, Right, Center
LabelType No_Label
FreeSpacing   1
Preamble
EndPreamble
Font
  Family  Typewriter
EndFont
End

Style  Code
CopyStyle litt_LyX-Code
End

Style  Codeinbox
CopyStyle litt_LyX-Code
End

Style  Codetext
CopyStyle litt_LyX-Code
End
#

In other words, I copied and pasted \lyxcode to \litt_lyxcode within my layout
file, and copied and pasted LyX-Code (minus the Preamble/EndPreamble section)
to litt_LyX-Code within my layout file, and then did CopyStyle on
litt_LyX-Code. It worked perfectly!

Thanks

Well, you can shorten \overrightarrow by defining a quick math-macro, e.g.:
\newcommand{\ora}[1]{\overrightarrow{#1}}
Remember that you can actually type that into LyX, then highlight it,
and hit Ctrl-M to declare the macro. And then, if you like, you can
define a shortcut for this: math-insert \ora is the function you would
want.

When you follow a link from the
homepage, the next page has a link to a non-existent stylesheet,

http:/farm/pub/skins/lyx/lyx.css

The correct URI should be
http://www.lyx.org/farm/pub/skins/lyx/lyx.css

(so the base URI isn't added)
That's what causes the missing formating. Firefox is better at
guessing what you meant here, but it really is an error that appears
on all the other pages except for the lyx home page.

If you can list all the allowable characters including carriage return and/or

character, test it for inclusion in that set, and report on any characters

I know nothing about unicode, so I'd need to be brought up to speed on that

Is anyone else finding it impossible to start a new section heading in
LyX 1.6 beta 4? When I type some text and then try to select "section"
from the drop down, nothing happens.

Thanks,
Tina Lamers

I have restored my laptop, reinstalled both miktex and lyx and none of this has
made any difference.

What happens?

I press the View PDF (pdflatex) button (I have tried them all, even from the
drop down menu), and some brief processng takes place... then nothing!

I recall from the past that while the pdf was being produced a number of sub
processes would spawn from the Lyx process (I think, maybe miktex?)... but
now... nothing. Just some proceesing with the lyx.exe... then nothing.

Can anyone suggest something else I should try?

I look forward to any useful suggestions.

Thank you in advance,
Marwan Boustany

Peace,

Is there a way to put math (using ctrl-m in windows) into a footnote?

When I tried, the document would not allow conversion into pdf or any
other format. Only when removed would it work.

This shouldn't be a problem. I do it all the time. There must be some
other issue. See if you can get the attached file to work. If not, we
can start there. If so, there must be another issue in your file.

Damn. Sorry about that. I searched bugzilla without finding anything.

Postscript or DVI"

Was sent yesterday... and it was somehow delayed. This posting is from
today where i have found what stopped my document being converted to pdf
etc..

My apologies for the inconvenience.

It would be really nice to have a HTML version of the Guides -- as a
directory of reasonable sized pages with all the nice hyperlinks and a
big index ...

Why not "The Guide"?

Ok the images are not available for download... Well I see the text and
footnote... That was the what I see attachment.

The first error says:

The layout file requested by this document, paper. layout, is not usable.
This is probably because a LaTeX class or style File required by it is not
available, See the Customization documentation For more information, LyX
will not be able to produce output.

The second error says:

No inlormation or exporting the Format PDF (pdIlatex).

Thank you for your time...

Actually, changing the encoding to utf8 will most probably *not* help
(as utf8 is very limited in the range of supported characters).

You could try changing to utf8x. This might help - maybe just by a more
specific error message.
