Actually, changing the encoding to utf8 will most probably *not* help
(as utf8 is very limited in the range of supported characters).

 Hm?

The encoding setting utf8 (i.e. utf8.def of the inputenc package)
supports only a small subset of unicode characters (mainly latin).
It works e.g. well with German umlauts and other Latin extensions.

However, these are also well supported by LyX internal conversion rules
as defined in the unicodesymbols definition file.

utf8x (the interface to the ucs package) might be a solution for some
characters not known by LyX (e.g. for some accented Greek characters used
in polytonic Greek).

For the English abstract everything is fine: I go to the beginnig of

 Abstract is inserted automatically.

Now I inserted a page break and again changed to Abstract. Now
however, I need the German word Zusammenfassung as the heading. The
problem is, lyx does not insert a heading at all in this second
abstract. And if it did, I wouldn't know how to change it.

 Any suggestions?

LyX merges subsequent paragraphs in Abstract style into one 'abstract'
environment. Therefore you do not get a second heading.

Put an empty paragraph inbetween and set its style to --Separator--

Note that screwing with the contents of the footline may require that you

Sans Serif Font For Quote paragraphs

Sans Serif: Latin Modern Sans
Typewriter: Latin Modern Typewriter

 that
the editor doesn't mistake the placeholders for comments.

It might not all be needed, but the downside risk of failure makes the tiny

use of all those values. The logic of deducing them was a little more than
I had time to figure out, but I'm telling Troubleshooters.Com readers to

I just went through this again, this time on my laptop, and let it be known

I had to use the dreaded --nodeps flag, because it errored out on a libqtxml4

module was already installed.

So anyone using Mandriva 2007, be aware of this glitch. I'm not saying to
take --nodeps lightly, but if you run into a contradiction of libtxml4's

By the way, Mandriva 2008 compiles 1.5.3 and 1.5.4 quite nicely.

As I intend sharing files with a Windows user, is this a common

Now I inserted a page break and again changed to Abstract. Now
however, I need the German word Zusammenfassung as the heading. The

 Any suggestions?

LyX merges subsequent paragraphs in Abstract style into one 'abstract'

Put an empty paragraph inbetween and set its style to --Separator--

Method 2: Use an outer theme that includes foot lines (or a presentation

Note that screwing with the contents of the footline may require that you

Sans Serif Font For Quote paragraphs

2008-08-18 Thread Louis A. Turk
How can I change the fonts to sans serif (and change the font size) for
the Quote and Quotation Paragraphs?

At present in document/fonts I have the following settings:

Default Family: Roman
Roman : Latin Modern Roman
Sans Serif: Latin Modern Sans
Typewriter: Latin Modern Typewriter

But sans serif fonts are not used at all. If I change Default Family to
Sans Serif then only sans serif fonts are used. So I know the sans serif
fonts are available.

PS I'm using the Memoir class, if perhaps that makes a difference.

I had to use the dreaded --nodeps flag, because it errored out on a libqtxml4

module was already installed.

So anyone using Mandriva 2007, be aware of this glitch. I'm not saying to
take --nodeps lightly, but if you run into a contradiction of libtxml4's
installation or lack thereof, this might be what's needed.

By the way, Mandriva 2008 compiles 1.5.3 and 1.5.4 quite nicely.

First problem : the figure is not showed in the LyX window. Instead I obtain

As I intend sharing files with a Windows user, is this a common

The encoding setting "utf8" (i.e. utf8.def of the "inputenc" package)
supports only a small subset of unicode characters (mainly latin).
It works e.g. well with German umlauts and other Latin extensions.

However, these are also well supported by LyX internal conversion rules
as defined in the "unicodesymbols" definition file.

"utf8x" (the interface to the "ucs" package) might be a solution for some
characters not "known" by LyX (e.g. for some accented Greek characters used
in polytonic Greek).

LyX merges subsequent paragraphs in Abstract style into one 'abstract'
environment. Therefore you do not get a second heading.

Put an empty paragraph inbetween and set its style to --Separator--
(--Trenner--).

You can re-define the commands used by the change tracker in the Latex
preamble. (Look at an exported Latex file or use View Source (and tick
the "complete source" box) to find out the command name and definition.

That's been solved. The Evince pdf viewer/print in Ubuntu 8.04 default
in letter while my document in A4. I have clarified this in this thread.

Anyone using Evince should be careful with this, always double check the

Sans Serif Font For Quote paragraphs

2008-08-18 Thread Louis A. Turk
How can I change the fonts to sans serif (and change the font size) for
the Quote and Quotation Paragraphs?

At present in document/fonts I have the following settings:

Default Family: Roman
Roman : Latin Modern Roman
Sans Serif: Latin Modern Sans
Typewriter: Latin Modern Typewriter

But sans serif fonts are not used at all. If I change Default Family to
Sans Serif then only sans serif fonts are used. So I know the sans serif
fonts are available.

Lou

PS I'm using the Memoir class, if perhaps that makes a difference.

If you still need the special indentation, modify the definitions I posted as
follows:

\renewenvironment{quote}%
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
\item[]}%
   {\endlist}

\renewenvironment{quotation}%
   {\sffamily\small\list{}{\listparindent 1.5em%

\parsep\z@ [EMAIL PROTECTED]@}%
\item[]}%
   {\endlist}

Replace \small with whatever font size you want.

PS or PDF always contains all stuff inside. I saw an option to have special

Chapter Style

2008-08-18 Thread Louis A. Turk
I've just learned how to use the Demo2 chapter style of the Memoir
Class. However, I would like to make three changes:

1. Use a smaller font for the chapter number (like is shown in
memoir-chapterstyles.pdf).

2. Use less space between the chapter number and the rule underneath it
(like is shown in memoir-chapterstyles.pdf).

3. Center the chapter title (instead of having it flush right).

Can someone tell me how to make these changes?

Yes. I prefer \insertframenumber to \insertpagenumber so that when I
put multiple overlays on a frame (e.g., expose bullets one by one) the
"slide number" stays the same as each overlay emerges; but that's a
matter of taste.

Mac prefers to store text files in UTF-8, while Windows tends to use
either 16 bit unicode or ISO with codepages. Another issue are line
endings. So you often need to convert text files when moving from one
system to another.

Open the files with a text editor (such as TextWrangler) that can
"translate" them to Windows.

I just went through this again, this time on my laptop, and let it be known
far and wide that trying to install libqt4-devel-4.1.4-12mdv2007.0.i586.rpm,
I had to use the dreaded --nodeps flag, because it errored out on a libqtxml4
dependency, and yet when I tried to install libqtxml4 via RPM, it said the
module was already installed.

So anyone using Mandriva 2007, be aware of this glitch. I'm not saying to
take --nodeps lightly, but if you run into a contradiction of libtxml4's
installation or lack thereof, this might be what's needed.

By the way, Mandriva 2008 compiles 1.5.3 and 1.5.4 quite nicely.

in the LaTeX preamble or in ERT (before the chapter title) put:

\setcounter{chapter}{1}

this will start the following chapter at 2 if ERT and will start the
first chapter in the document at 2 if placed in preamble.

custom headers for unnumbered chapter*

I manually setup the headers. My right page has my chapter title:

But am unsure how to get my headers done for the unnumbered chapters. I
still have titles for these unnumbered chapters. Any suggestions or

I tried manually setting this fancyhead[RO] and also define \leftmark, but
that caused changes beyond.

Problems with figures

2008-08-18 Thread JC Bustamante

Hi all,

I started using Lyx1.5.3 on Ubuntu 8.04, and I have two problems when trying
to put centered figures into a document. What I do is the following: Insert
-> Floating object -> Figure (sorry if the translation is not right), and
the Insert -> Image, then browse and find my *.eps file.

First problem : the figure is not showed in the LyX window. Instead I obtain
a message "converting to a readable format", (or something like that) and
then "error in conversion". When I choose not to show the figure in the LyX
window I don't have this error. However, this is not that bad, since the
picture is o.k in the dvi, the ps and the pdf files. This problem does not
happens if I insert a .png file.

Second, and most important: The caption "Figura 1" should be at the bottom
of the figure, and not at its left (see attached file).

Thanks

Lyx cross platform compatability - is there a problem?

2008-08-18 Thread Graham Smith
I have asked in another question (sa far without a solution) about
problems with getting a Lyx file created on a Mac to compile on
Windows (it compiles fine on Linux).

As I intend sharing files with a Windows user, is this a common
problem, and is there any routine methods of avoiding it. Creating
files on Macs/Linux that then won't compile on Windows is a major
problem for me. Indeed, it will force me to stop using Lyx as our
main document processor, as compatibility is fundamental.

Many thanks,

Graham
