Lyx and it worked like a charm since TexLive2005 contains other necessary

Because this is no real solution. Everybody should benefit and not
everybody build its own solution. ChkTeX is on CTAN that everybody can
access it, it is not in MiKTeX either due to compilation problems or license
issues. Please inform Christian Schenk and he will add it.

[Mac 1.5.6] No information for converting xpm format files to png; Unable to add xpm to png converter

2008-10-31 Thread Nick Bell
Hi, I'm unable to generate a PDF from the EmbeddedObjects.lyx help file:
I get the error No information for converting xpm format files to png.
Define a converter in the preferences.

http://img.skitch.com/20081031-qa9ejyijjxmyxfekjtmjirmnwx.jpg

When I go to the preferences, there is no converter for XPM to PNG, and
the Add and Modify buttons are greyed out:

http://img.skitch.com/20081031-mjb9yfpit92s8xr96q7ipdc3kh.jpg

I am able to save e.g. Look and Feel preferences.

ImageMagick 6.4.1 is installed in /usr/local/bin which is in the PATH.

Any ideas? I'm using Leopard.

Hi Paul. I'm on Fedora 8, and it uses tetex-latex 3.0-44.9.fc8

Keith,

I'd suggest you upgrade to TexLive -- tetex is no longer maintained. You may
well find the packages you want are already included. See:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureTexLive

However, the basic installation for most CTAN packages is pretty simple:

1. Download the package -- usually the You can get this entire directory
bundled as .zip near the top of the page listing the contents.

2. Unzip the downloaded file.

3. Follow the installation instructions in the README file.

4. Run texhash

5. From within LyX, do: Tools-Reconfigure. Restart LyX.

See section 5.1 in the LyX Help file Customization.

The installation instructions typically are something like this (from the
calendar package):

INSTALLATION

The simplest way to install the tools in the package is to make a
subdirectory in the search path of your TeX, FTP all of the source files to
that directory, and run latex allcal.ins. You should then be able to run
the demonstration files.

I think the answer is that you should use longtable. See the Embedded
Objects manual for info.

Yes, longtable is the only sane way to have a table split over two (or
more) pages. One can make two tables instead, but the problem with that
is that it is hard to change the split when editing the document. A
longtable adjusts automatically.

Alternatively, if the table fits on a page but the page number gets
into it, put an ERT with \thispagestyle{empty} somewhere, so
the page will be unnumbered. But note that it won't look good in
a two-sided layout, as the table extends way below the bottom
margin of the facing page.

Sorted out now Les. Thanks again for your helpfull reply.

I added the texlive.repo to yum.

Also created a Smart PM channel from the yum repo.

Fedora spotted the texlive repo, and offered to update from
tetex-latex to texlive-latex.

Did that, and everything also appears to work fine now.

I also found the installation path for new latex packages,
which can be found in LyX, under Tools TeX Information.
Then checked the show paths box.

I installed a new package called 'pmboxdraw' by creating a
new directory and copying the required files into that.

Thanks again Les.

I put the following code into the preamble, but it doesn't work.

\pgfdeclareimage[interpolate=true,width=1.4cm,height=1.4cm]{mylogo}{logo}
\setbeamertemplate{sidebar left} {
\pgfuseimage{mylogo}

Are you using a Beamer style that (a) has a left sidebar and (b) puts
the logo there by default? If so, all you need is

\pgfdeclareimage[interpolate=true,width=1.4cm,height=1.4cm]{mylogo}{logo}
\logo{\pgfuseimage{mylogo}}

(assuming that 'logo.eps' is the name of the image file).

If you are using a style that has a left sidebar but does not normally
include a logo there, then you have to modify the appropriate
beamertemplate. If you're using a style that does not have a left
sidebar, I don't think declaring the template will add one; you have to
modify the style itself.

If this doesn't answer the question fully, let us know what style you
are using.

Re: missing $ inserted : what does that mean?

I sometimes have this problem due to what is likely a bug in LyX.

Try the following: segment your document into several documents and
see which one(s) fail. Continue removing until you find the offending
part(s). Then if you also look at the LaTeX source code you can
sometimes find the problem. Ususally for me it is an extra space
(LyX typically eliminates those, and if it doesn't for some reason,
things break).

That's a LaTeX error. Something is odd with the way you're putting in

LaTeX and then see where the error comes from there. You can also
click on the error message in list and see the line in the original

Skim, pdfsync and child documents in LyX. Possible?

2008-10-31 Thread Christopher Reeve
Hi, I just got Skim to pdfsync with LyX. It took me a while, and I think my
problems were that I had defined my lyxpipe in ~/.lyx/.lyxpipe. Now I set it
just as ~/.lyx. Another problem I had was that LyX could not find the
pdfsync.sty package so I downloaded it and stuck it in my working folder. If
anyone can tell me what I should have done please say!

My question now is, I am writing a long document with many chapters so I
stick all the chapters into child documents which I include in a parent
document. If I compile the whole document then Command-Shift clicking in
Skim it will only relolcate the courser in the parent document in LyX - that
is if I am reading a middle chapter it does not work. Does anyone know if
there is a way to fix this?

Your solution might be to proof read each chapter seperately. The only
problem with this is that I have many references to figures and equations in
different chapters and these would be shown as ??, so I have no way of
telling if the link is actually broken or not. Actually a most common
problem I have is forgetting to change the reference type - that is
sometimes I might refer to a figure number and other times to a page. I
don't really want to read the document again just to check for these errors.

Cheers,

Chris.

Mac OS 10.4, LyX 1.6rc4, Skim 1.1.13

ps, I might formally add this as a feature request: It would be very nice to
be able to search within child documents from within the parent document
with Find.

Also being able to search for occurences label names - both when they are
defined and or when they are refered to. This would make debugging much
easier when LyX refuses to compile.

Are you using a BibTeX database to add citations? The fact that this
occurs during or after the second pass rather than the first suggests
that something is being added belatedly (like the bibliography) that
produces the error.  You said you didn't do anything to the document;
might you (or someone else) have edited the BibTeX file?

Re: Problem with intext citations with custom BibTeX .bst file

Andrew Barr wrote:

Hi all,

I have been using the java program Bib-It to put together my own
custom BibTeX style file. It is working very well, but the problem I
am having is that I don't seem to be able to specify in-text citation
styles with Bib-It and I don't speak .bst.

Right now the in-text citations only list the first author and year.
I need it to list (FirstAuthor [ SecondAuthor], Year). For more than
two authors, (FirstAuthor \emph{et. al}, Year). I only want to use et
al. for in-text citations. In the full reference list I need to list
all authors.

My .bst file is available here
https://webspace.utexas.edu/wab536/www/custombst_nat.bst

Any help is much appreciated.

The following quick fix might or might not work. In LyX, go to Document
- Settings... - Bibliography, select Natbib, and pick Author-year as
the Natbib style. When inserting a citation, pick the desired format in
the drop-down list and check Full author list when there are exactly
two authors. By default, I think this will insert two-author cites as
A. Smith and B. Jones, 1987. If you really want an ampersand rather
than and, edit line 87 of the .bst file, replacing 'and' with '\'.
(The backslash is important.)

That said, when I tested this on a small document, it inexplicably
mangled some of the references. In one case, it cited Jones et al. for
a sole-authored article. In another, it cited Jones 2000 for an article
with three authors (no et al.). One (perfectly valid) BibTeX entry it
refused to insert at all. So my suggestion would be to use the
custom-bib LaTeX package to generate a new .bst file that does what you
want.

The right place for manually installed packages on the Mac is (assuming

~/Library/texmf/tex/latex/
You need to run texhash afterwards (from Terminal).

No idea, but a general question:
Compared to the additional hassle the each-chapter-in-a-file approach
creates, do you really gain that much?

I am working on a 200p document right now as well (also with plenty of
math, figures, etc.), and there is no problem whatsoever (1.5.6). And it
is simple/quick to get around in the document, even with the basic
outliner of 1.5.x.. It needs some time getting used to actually use the
outliner, but then it is fast.

The xpm files are the small icon images.

When I go to the preferences, there is no converter for XPM to PNG

It is not necessary to have a converter defined for this (I do not have
one either). If nothing is defined, then LyX falls back on using convert

then LyX complains about a missing converter. So it looks like LyX does

You could also try starting Lyx from terminal with (adjust the path):

And also see what output the following gives you (put on one line):
python

ImageMagick 6.4.1 is installed in /usr/local/bin which is in the PATH.

Is it also on the system's path? (I.e., on Terminal, type

Any ideas? I'm using Leopard.

No other than that your ImageMagick installtion is broken.

Hope some of the above helps tracing down the problem.

Fedora spotted the texlive repo, and offered to update from

Did that, and everything also appears to work fine now.

I also found the installation path for new latex packages,

Then checked the show paths box.

I installed a new package called 'pmboxdraw' by creating a

I put the following code into the preamble, but it doesn't work.

\pgfdeclareimage[interpolate=true,width=1.4cm,height=1.4cm]{mylogo}{logo}
\setbeamertemplate{sidebar left} {
\pgfuseimage{mylogo}

Are you using a Beamer style that (a) has a left sidebar and (b) puts
the logo there by default? If so, all you need is

\pgfdeclareimage[interpolate=true,width=1.4cm,height=1.4cm]{mylogo}{logo}
\logo{\pgfuseimage{mylogo}}

If this doesn't answer the question fully, let us know what style you
are using.

Something is odd with the way you're putting in

click on the error message in list and see the line in the original

Skim, pdfsync and child documents in LyX. Possible?

2008-10-31 Thread Christopher Reeve
Hi, I just got Skim to pdfsync with LyX. It took me a while, and I think my

pdfsync.sty package so I downloaded it and stuck it in my working folder. If
anyone can tell me what I should have done please say!

The fact that this
occurs during or after the second pass rather than the first suggests
that something is being added belatedly (like the bibliography) that
produces the error.  You said you didn't do anything to the document;
might you (or someone else) have edited the BibTeX file?

Re: Problem with intext citations with custom BibTeX .bst file

Andrew Barr wrote:

Hi all,

custom BibTeX style file.

When I go to the preferences, there is no converter for XPM to PNG

It is not necessary to have a converter defined for this (I do not have
one either). If nothing is defined, then LyX falls back on using convert
(which is ImageMagick), and which should work here. And if that fails,
then LyX complains about a missing converter. So it looks like LyX does
not find your convert-binary. Or your convert-version fails to process a
particular file. Do you have anything on Console?

You could also try starting Lyx from terminal with (adjust the path):
/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx -dbg graphics

And also see what output the following gives you (put on one line):
python
/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/scripts/convertDefault.py
/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/images/copy.xpm copy.png

ImageMagick 6.4.1 is installed in /usr/local/bin which is in the PATH.

Is it also on the system's path? (I.e., on Terminal, type
convert --version). Normally it should be...

Any ideas? I'm using Leopard.

No other than that your ImageMagick installtion is broken.

Hope some of the above helps tracing down the problem.

Good luck,
Konrad

1. Download the package -- usually the "You can get this entire directory
bundled as .zip" near the top of the page listing the contents.

2. Unzip the downloaded file.

3. Follow the installation instructions in the README file.

4. Run texhash

5. From within LyX, do: Tools->Reconfigure. Restart LyX.

See section 5.1 in the LyX Help file Customization.

The installation instructions typically are something like this (from the
calendar package):

INSTALLATION

The simplest way to install the tools in the package is to make a
subdirectory in the search path of your TeX, FTP all of the source files to
that directory, and run "latex allcal.ins". You should then be able to run
the demonstration files.

Please avoid sending me Word or PowerPoint attachments.

Thankyou for your very helpfull reply Les. I'm gonna
uninstall tetex-latex and start afresh with:

yum install texlive texlive-latex

I'll post again to the list and let you all know how it goes.

But note that it won't look good in
a two-sided layout, as the table extends way below the bottom
margin of the facing page.

tend to produce small patches eveytime I need to use chktex.

The next version is mostly ready for release, I just need to find a

I added the texlive.repo to yum.

Also created a Smart PM channel from the yum repo.

Fedora spotted the texlive repo, and offered to update from

Did that, and everything also appears to work fine now.

I also found the installation path for new latex packages,
which can be found in LyX, under Tools > TeX Information.
Then checked the show paths box.

I installed a new package called 'pmboxdraw' by creating a
new directory and copying the required files into that.

How to insert a logo into beamer's sidebar?

I put the following code into the preamble, but it doesn't work.

\pgfdeclareimage[interpolate=true,width=1.4cm,height=1.4cm]{mylogo}{logo}
\setbeamertemplate{sidebar left} {
\pgfuseimage{mylogo}

Are you using a Beamer style that (a) has a left sidebar and (b) puts
the logo there by default? If so, all you need is

\pgfdeclareimage[interpolate=true,width=1.4cm,height=1.4cm]{mylogo}{logo}
\logo{\pgfuseimage{mylogo}}

If this doesn't answer the question fully, let us know what style you
are using.

I sometimes have this problem due to what is likely a bug in LyX.

Try the following: segment your document into several documents and
see which one(s) fail. Continue removing until you find the offending
part(s). Then if you also look at the LaTeX source code you can
sometimes find the problem. Ususally for me it is an "extra" space
(LyX typically eliminates those, and if it doesn't for some reason,
things break).

The fact that this
occurs during or after the second pass rather than the first suggests
that something is being added belatedly (like the bibliography) that
produces the error.  You said you didn't do anything to the document;
might you (or someone else) have edited the BibTeX file?

Re: Problem with intext citations with custom BibTeX .bst file

Andrew Barr wrote:

Hi all,

custom BibTeX style file. It is working very well, but the problem I
am having is that I don't seem to be able to specify in-text citation
styles with Bib-It and I don't speak .bst.

Right now the in-text citations only list the first author and year.
I need it to list (FirstAuthor [& SecondAuthor], Year). For more than
two authors, (FirstAuthor \emph{et. al}, Year). I only want to use et
al. for in-text citations. In the full reference list I need to list
all authors.

My .bst file is available here
https://webspace.utexas.edu/wab536/www/custombst_nat.bst

Any help is much appreciated.

The following quick fix might or might not work. In LyX, go to Document
-> Settings... -> Bibliography, select Natbib, and pick Author-year as
the Natbib style. When inserting a citation, pick the desired format in
the drop-down list and check "Full author list" when there are exactly
two authors. By default, I think this will insert two-author cites as
"A. Smith and B. Jones, 1987". If you really want an ampersand rather
than "and", edit line 87 of the .bst file, replacing 'and' with '\&'.

So my suggestion would be to use the
custom-bib LaTeX package to generate a new .bst file that does what you
want.

there is a way to fix this?

No idea, but a general question:
Compared to the additional hassle the each-chapter-in-a-file approach
creates, do you really gain that much?

I am working on a >200p document right now as well (also with plenty of
math, figures, etc.), and there is no problem whatsoever (1.5.6). And it
is simple/quick to get around in the document, even with the basic
outliner of 1.5.x.. It needs some time getting used to actually use the
outliner, but then it is fast.

ps, I might formally add this as a feature request: It would be very nice to
be able to search within child documents from within the parent document
with Find.
Also being able to search for occurences label names - both when they are
defined and or when they are refered to. This would make debugging much
easier when LyX refuses to compile.

I believe it is generally known that the current Find/Replace is pretty
basic and that much could be improved (contributors welcome!). There is
some pretty hot stuff on its way though ...

Cheers,
/Konrad

Can you generate a pdf from the UserGuide, for example?

I get the error "No information for converting xpm format files to png.
Define a converter in the preferences."

The xpm files are the small icon images.

When I go to the preferences, there is no converter for XPM to PNG

It is not necessary to have a converter defined for this (I do not have
one either). If nothing is defined, then LyX falls back on using convert
(which is ImageMagick), and which should work here. And if that fails,
then LyX complains about a missing converter. So it looks like LyX does
not find your convert-binary. Or your convert-version fails to process a
particular file. Do you have anything on Console?

You could also try starting Lyx from terminal with (adjust the path):
/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx -dbg graphics

And also see what output the following gives you (put on one line):
python
/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/scripts/convertDefault.py
/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/images/copy.xpm copy.png

ImageMagick 6.4.1 is installed in /usr/local/bin which is in the PATH.

Is it also on the system's path? (I.e., on Terminal, type
convert --version). Normally it should be...

Any ideas? I'm using Leopard.

No other than that your ImageMagick installtion is broken.

Hope some of the above helps tracing down the problem.

Good luck,
Konrad

Compiles fine on the Mac.

For those not being able to wait, I have placed a zipped Mac Universal
Binary (without the installer) at

For what goes onto the server, we better wait for Bennett's build.

Builds and runs fine on cygwin OOTB.

Builds with no errors on mingw but crashes at startup in getopt_long()
when using short options. I mean, "chktex --help" works, but "chktex -h"
crashes. Anyway, "chktex file.tex" successfully checks file.tex.
