You'll need to use the increase/decrease depth stuff to get the structure right. Actually, even for this one, it wouldn't be so hard to change. Highlight everything, then choose Enumerate from the layout combo; then select everything that was under the first heading and choose EditIncrease List Depth. Repeat as necessary. rh

Re: lyx 1.6.0 compilation failure, error: forward declaration
C++ Compiler: g++ (3.3.4) You've a fairly old version of g++. Maybe upgrading gcc might solve the problem ? Vincent Thanks, I installed gcc-4.3.2 locally and ... LyX compiled successfully (even without re-compiling Qt beforehand). If the error was due to the old compiler, I suggest modifying the LyX INSTALL file where it says: First of all, you will also need a recent C++ compiler, where recent means that the compilers are close to C++ standard conforming (gcc 3.x). Keep up the good work, Andreas

Re: New layout
Max Bian wrote: I'd like to be able to display the graphics along with the text if possible. Can you please give more details on how this can be done? Well, the first thing you have to do is figure out how to do what you want to do in LaTeX. You'll need a command or environment that works like this, more or less: \begin{graphbox}[text goes here] %in here is the graphic you want to display, the way LyX would format it, e.g.: \includegraphics{graphics/brown} \end{graphbox} and the result should be the output you want. Once you've got that, turning it into a LyX layout isn't terribly hard. Have a look at the customization manual, if you haven't already. But something more or less like this will work: Style GraphicBox LatexType environment LatexName graphbox OptionalArgs 1 Preamble %here you'll include the LaTeX definitions you need EndPreamble End You can tweak this endlessly. rh

You can probably do it either way, rh I don't remember if you can have 2 parboxes or whatever side by side, or whether you'd need to use a table. But whatever. Here's how I usually do stuff like that: I put the text in one environment. That environment prints nothing, instead assigning #1 to a variable. By the way, you might need to use a character style instead of an environment for that -- I don't remember, but I think envionrments print the text no matter what, which is not what you want. I put the graphic in a second environment -- a fairly complex one. The second environment makes a big box, then 2 small boxes. Box 1 gets #1, which I believe contains the graphic. Box 2 gets the saved variable, which contains the text. The beauty of doing it that way is that everything you want is visible in LyX, at least somewhat representative of how it will look on paper. three problems
Congratulations and applause to the developers! I love the new LyX 1.6. I thought 1.5.6 was already awesome and I am still playing with the many many improvements of 1.6. I'm using the mac version with OS X 10.5.5. Three small problems I've had: 1. Exiting from Full Screen; when I get out of full screen the collapse button (not sure what it is called; I mean the little wide one that hides some menus and toolbars) that lives on the upper right of frames/windows in mac OS X disappears. I can't then recover it in any way... maximizing, minimizing, resizing doesn't revive it. This seems like a bug. 2. Another problem is related to the toolbars. If I customize which ones show and their position my choices do not seem to consistently stick across sessions. I'm not sure what I have to do to get some preferred set and position of toolbars saved as a default for new files. It seems like LyX makes some attempts to remember these things, but after a while (after opening and closing sessions or opening different files) it forgets, or reverts to positions used in other files. I can't figure out any consistent pattern yet. Specifically, if I start with no file open. Then remove the View/ Update toolbar. Set the toolbar sizes to small. Then close that frame. Then when I open a new frame it looks just like that. But if I load some previous file it may go back to the old look. Hence, I concluded it is doing things file specifically. But no: if you close the frame and go back to another file that you had tweaked the toolbars differently it will now forget. Or if you start a new file you may get Sorry if I am not describing this very well, but part of it is that it really seems to behave erratically from my point of view, or with an odd rule. Note: I do have the Allow saving/restoring of window layouts and geometry checked in my preferences. I am also using LyX with the tab option enabled. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. 3. I have load open files from last session enabled in my preferences. However, the contrast in the behavior of the following two operations is surely not intended: -start a new session with no files open -open file foo.lyx -close this file using CMD-W or selecting close from File menu -close LyX using CMD-Q -open LyX again: you will NOT have foo.lyx loaded, as expected alternatively... -start a new session with no files open -open file foo.lyx -this time: close this file clicking on the upper left button of the frame (the one with the x mark) -close LyX using CMD-Q -open LyX again: you WILL have foo.lyx loaded Both operations really should give the same result, since in the second case, before you shutdown LyX you can verify that no file is open, e.g. go to View and it reports No Documents Open! so this isn't a matter of an open buffer without a window (as I am used to having in Emacs). Thanks! -Ivan

And so my files contain code such as: \includegraphics{x:/images/bubblegum.jpg} \includepdf{x:/pdfs/bubble} My question is how do I work with these files and these paths on my new linux box? Thanks and Regards, Eran, The solution has three parts: 1. Find out where the network folder mapped to X:\ for windows is for a Linux client. For example, in my office a disk partition which is accessed through Samba as Y:\ on Windows is accessed through NFS as /home/public/ under Linux. 2. Find out which included files have the full path in their filename: $ grep X: *.lyx Some graphics (and other included files) may be in the same directory as the .lyx file, in which case you probably do not need to do anything. 3. Change the path in the affected .lyx files using a text editor. If you still need to access the same files using Windows, a more creative approach may be needed: In each directory containing .lyx files, create a symbolic link to the directory mounted as X:\ in Windows. For example, in my case, I would use the command: $ ln -s /home/public Y: so a file (for example) /home/public/pdf/test.pdf in Linux and Y:\pdf\test.pdf in Windows could be accessed from the current directory as Y:/pdf/test.pdf I haven't tried this last method, but it should work. -- Les ~~ Please avoid sending me Word or PowerPoint attachments. Since some of my sections have very detailed sub- subsub- etc. headings with no standard paragraphs in them, I get the dreaded Overfull \vbox error. In fact the box is so overfull that the pdf ouput (I use pdflatex) is grossly incomplete. I see: You've ONLY got headings, and no actual body to any of the (sub-)sections, except for additional headings. What you're seeing is the effect of LaTeX refusing to separate the body of the section from its heading. I don't know of any easy way around this. You could just add some non-printing spaces as body text in the right places to effect your page breaks. HI Richard, I was afraid of that. I am basically trying to use LyX as an outliner program, and it works great until LaTeX takes charge of the typesetting. I guess my only option is to intersperse a few chracters here and there, as you suggest. 1.6 Has Issues With Minipage Options ?
Hi I was previously able (in version 1.5.6) to right-click on a minipage (or the little grey flag saying Box (Minipage)) to get a little dialog box containing options for changing minipages. Using pdfpages with LyX?
I use the latex package 'pdfpages' to include a frontpage in my lyx document. But I can only export the whole report to pdf (using pdflatex) if I supply the full path to the pdffrontpage. Below is the latex code I need to use. I am still not sure how to define a layout with the correct latex definition so I can pass the text and the graph to it without manually adding all the boxes (minipages).
Thanks! -Ivan

Hi, first of all i love lyx. Thank you for this piece of heaven of software. Re: three problems
I do meet the proble 2 in Windows XP SP3 too. I have not yet checked other two problems. Murat 2008/11/12 Ivan Werning [EMAIL PROTECTED] Congratulations and applause to the developers!
Problem with LyX 1.6 on Windows
Hi! I just installed LyX 1.6 on my Windows machine and I am really excited to start using it. The first thing I tried is the context-sensitive menu... and a smile appeared in my face :-) But this post is about some problems detected during the installation and during normal use. Almost at the end of the installation, I got a cannot write to file error message. The installation log looks like this: Output folder: MiKTeX 2.7SystemAdmin yesPowerUser noSharedSetup unknownBinDir C\tools\latex\MiKTeX 2.7\miktex\binOS Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)Root0 C\Documents and Settings\hum\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7Root1 C\Documents and Settings\hum\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7Root2 C\tools\latex\MiKTeX 2.7Install C\tools\latex\MiKTeX 2.7UserData C\Documents and Settings\hum\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7UserConfig C\Documents and Settings\hum\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7fndb0 C\Documents and Settings\hum\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7\miktex\config\d42afcd09b2a33a4d4fde3fef0e5a74f.fndbfndb1 C\Documents and Settings\hum\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7\miktex\config\dcbb80e86481737e2e94cfe55fa8845d.fndbfndb2 C\Documents and Settings\hum\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7\miktex\config\0620fbc95f112eed7b49ccbfab40c734.fndbfndbmpm C\Documents and Settings\h Can't write: MiKTeX 2.7SystemAdmin yesPowerUser noSharedSetup unknownBinDir C\tools\latex\MiKTeX 2.7\miktex\binOS Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)Root0 C\Documents and Settings\hum\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7Root1 C\Documents and Settings\hum\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7Root2 C\tools\latex\MiKTeX 2.7Install C\tools\latex\MiKTeX 2.7UserData C\Documents and Settings\hum\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7UserConfig C\Documents and Settings\hum\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7fndb0 C\Documents and Settings\hum\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7\miktex\config\d42afcd09b2a33a4d4fde3fef0e5a74f.fndbfndb1 C\Documents and Settings\hum\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7\miktex\config\dcbb80e86481737e2e94cfe55fa8845d.fndbfndb2 C\Documents and Settings\hum\Local Settings\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.7\miktex\config\0620fbc95f112eed7b49ccbfab40c734.fndbfndbmpm C\Documents and Settings\h\dvipost.sty The first time I pressed retry twice and I got an unsuccessful installation message. Re: Overfull vbox on headings-only document

I am using the Koma-Script article class. Unfortunately I cannot get a correct pdf file from my lyx document. It seems that LaTeX tries to force all subheadings belonging to the same section into a single page. Re: LyX 1.6.0 is released
Paul A. Rubin wrote: Olivier Ripoll wrote: Eran Kaplinsky wrote: The Debian package works well! A mild annoyance: files prepared with RC5 (and older, I suppose) can't be opened. The fileformat must be changed for the file to open. Eran I had a similar issue on WinXP from RC3-RC5 (I had to use RC4 for all files), but the 1.6.0 version opens all RC5 files fine for me here. Could it be some lyx2lyx issues ? (missing python stuff?, launch LyX from a terminal and look at the error messages). I think so. RC5 would not open any of my old (1.5.x) docs, but 1.6.0 seems to open all of them. The problem with RC5 looked like some sort of Python issue based on output to shell, but I didn't make any serious attempt to track it down, since 1.6.0 came out so quickly. /Paul Hi, Actually, the bug you hit looks like the one Uwe fixed by re-releasing RC5 (4-11 was the first installer, he released 4-12 a few days later, see his recent post on the devel-list in response to your message). I had this Rc3-RC5 issue even with the second installer. But I used RC4 to convert. Best regards, Olivier
1.6 Has Issues With Minipage Options ?
Hi I was previously able (in version 1.5.6) to right-click on a minipage (or the little grey flag saying Box (Minipage)) to get a little dialog box containing options for changing minipages. I no longer get this with my locally compiled version of Lyx 1.6. Is this specific to me or a more general problem ? -- Mike Meredith (http://zonky.org/) There has been such a thing as letting mankind alone; there has never been such a thing as governing mankind [with success] -- Zhuangzi
Using pdfpages with LyX?
I use the latex package 'pdfpages' to include a frontpage in my lyx document. But I can only export the whole report to pdf (using pdflatex) if I supply the full path to the pdffrontpage. The is not optimal when the .lyx file is used with SVN. Does anybody know if its possible to use pdfpages in lyx with relative paths? -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Using-pdfpages-with-LyX--tp1489169p1489169.html Sent from the LyX - Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Mix LyXs and MikTeXs?
Hello, Could I install LyX 1.6 with MikTeX 2.7 having LyX 1.5.6 with MikTeX 2.6 already installed? Does LyX configure script have any preference searching for MikTeX? Thanks in advance for your fast reply :-) -- Manveru jabber: [EMAIL PROTECTED] gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl
