Well, it is not _just_ that IMHO. My proposal:

LyX is a graphical word processor mainly used with a LateX backend. LyX 
is especially suited for structured document writing.


The plain text export of LyX for example is excellent and doesn't rely 
on LateX.

does not export pdflatex)

I seem to remember that a LyX  / wiki connection was discussed some
time ago and it just struck me that that is also an nice way of
collaborating.

The ability to save LyX documents as a wiki page and load a wiki page into Lyx.
In non-lyx environment there might be a wiki page for information
sharing/documentation, and if you can edit the wiki page through LyX,
well, that would be very nice, when one consideres the (lack of?)
edit-friendlyness in wiki.

Technically, saving is nothing more than posting a long text to a web
page? loading = reading a frame on a wiki page? Add a html/wiki --
LyX converter and we are all done!
Heck, with the current LyX format it feels like   replacing \section with ==

But you can always manually prevent hyphenation at a certain point (if 
it is a one-time problem).

I don't know about viqr, but I created a Wiki page describing the basic steps:

You mean I could avoid with ERT at the hyphenated line? Like
\hyphenpenalty1? Doesn´t seem like a long term solution, especially
for longer documents. Is this going to be revised in a newer version of
Latex?

Contemplating the styles created by most MS Word Power Users* I can regard 
that shortcoming as a major advantage.

You an directly insert this character to your LyX document from the Insert-Special 
Character-Symbols dialog or from another program.

 If you put
\hyphenpenalty=1
 you avoid hyphenation in all lines in the entire document.
 If you put a lower number, like 200 or 500, you reduce the number of word 
hyphenated in all lines in the whole documente.
 \brokenpenalty is for your case.

I am trying to export a lyx document into an open document, I press export,
but then no files are created.
Can someone help?
The reason is I am trying to get the file into an MS Word file so my

Yes, I'm the guy usually bringing this up :-)

I agree that wiki pages aren't that easy to edit. Some tools exist to edit 
the pages in a separate text editor, and I'm pretty sure WYSIWYGI tools 
are on their way as well.


However, note that AFAICT, it's only the following functionality that 
you gain:


1. The document is stored in a common area (the wiki) and can be edited
   using LyX..

2. The document (i.e. wiki page) is stored so that's it's easily visible
   and searchable through a regular browser

3. The document is editable also through the web browser.

The first functionality could just as well be implemented by several other 
means, e.g. by using a VCS to upload files to a public repository. This 
would also give you additional functionality.


The second functionality could also be implemented by uploading 
(comitting/pushing) not only the .LyX-file, but also a .html-version of 
the file. And a PDF while you're at it. Alternatively, the system could 
automatically generate a PDF/HTML-file on the server once a .lyx-file has 
been uploaded (comitted/pushed).


The third functionality is more difficult though.

Why am I saying this? Well, I think it's important to ask ourselves what 
the collaboration functions are... to me the number one functionality 
would be to let several people edit the same document at once.

Sorry for the late answer. I did check the paths for the converters, but I
couldn't find anything. In windows installation, the scripts folder which
contains the converters, is inside of Resources i tried the change the
path name, but i ended up getting the same error.

the original command:
python -tt $$s/scripts/fig2pdftex.py $$i $$o

i tried to change to
python -tt $$s/resources/scripts/fig2pdftex.py $$i $$o
or
python -tt $$s/Resources/scripts/fig2pdftex.py $$i $$o

but it didn't work.

I'm not sure, but I expect that whatever program LyX uses to convert
fig files into a form that LaTeX can use doesn't exist on your Windows
machine. Check under ToolsPreferencesConverters, and find out what
that is.

I often (not always, but very often) get this error message (@XP). It is
usually not that important though, because the output is often correctly
generated. I sometimes think it has to do with updating a dvi which is
viewed by yap, but to be honest, I don't have a clue what is wrong.

We need to know what system you are on. On Linux, the best export is
tex4ht. There is a special script oolatex that creates the .odt file.

I don't know how it works on Windows.

I would like to avoid hyphenation in the last line of a page. How  
could I do that? Maybe that´s mentioned somewhere in the User Guide,  
but I can´t find it. I´m on OSX with Lyx 1.6.1.

Doesn't look too good ...

But you can always manually prevent hyphenation at a certain point (if 
it is a one-time problem).

I don't know about viqr, but I created a Wiki page describing the basic steps:

To use your french keyboard for vietnamese, you can create your own keyboard map, see section 4.2 of 
LyX's customization manual that you find in the Help menu.

Hm, well, I really meant to avoid it for the whole document…

You mean I could avoid with ERT at the hyphenated line? Like
\hyphenpenalty1? Doesn´t seem like a long term solution, especially
for longer documents. Is this going to be revised in a newer version of
Latex?

Contemplating the styles created by most MS Word Power Users* I can regard 
that shortcoming as a major advantage.

You an directly insert this character to your LyX document from the Insert-Special 
Character-Symbols dialog or from another program.

 If you put
\hyphenpenalty=1
 you avoid hyphenation in all lines in the entire document.
 If you put a lower number, like 200 or 500, you reduce the number of word 
hyphenated in all lines in the whole documente.
 \brokenpenalty is for your case.

Export to Open document

I am trying to export a lyx document into an open document, I press export,
but then no files are created.
Can someone help?
The reason is I am trying to get the file into an MS Word file so my
supervisor can open it.

Yes, I'm the guy usually bringing this up :-)

The ability to save LyX documents as a wiki page and load a wiki page 
into Lyx. In non-lyx environment there might be a wiki page for 
information sharing/documentation, and if you can edit the wiki page 
through LyX, well, that would be very nice, when one consideres the 
(lack of?) edit-friendlyness in wiki.


I agree that wiki pages aren't that easy to edit. Some tools exist to edit 
the pages in a separate text editor, and I'm pretty sure WYSIWYGI tools 
are on their way as well.


However, note that AFAICT, it's only the following functionality that 
you gain:


1. The document is stored in a common area (the wiki) and can be edited
   using LyX..

2. The document (i.e. wiki page) is stored so that's it's easily visible
   and searchable through a regular browser

3. The document is editable also through the web browser.

The first functionality could just as well be implemented by several other 
means, e.g. by using a VCS to upload files to a public repository. This 
would also give you additional functionality.


The second functionality could also be implemented by uploading 
(comitting/pushing) not only the .LyX-file, but also a .html-version of 
the file. And a PDF while you're at it. Alternatively, the system could 
automatically generate a PDF/HTML-file on the server once a .lyx-file has 
been uploaded (comitted/pushed).


The third functionality is more difficult though.

Why am I saying this? Well, I think it's important to ask ourselves what 
the collaboration functions are... to me the number one functionality 
would be to let several people edit the same document at once.

Sorry for the late answer. I did check the paths for the converters, but I
couldn't find anything. In windows installation, the scripts folder which
contains the converters, is inside of Resources i tried the change the
path name, but i ended up getting the same error.

the original command:
python -tt $$s/scripts/fig2pdftex.py $$i $$o

i tried to change to
python -tt $$s/resources/scripts/fig2pdftex.py $$i $$o
or
python -tt $$s/Resources/scripts/fig2pdftex.py $$i $$o

but it didn't work.

I'm not sure, but I expect that whatever program LyX uses to convert
fig files into a form that LaTeX can use doesn't exist on your Windows
machine. Check under ToolsPreferencesConverters, and find out what
that is.

I often (not always, but very often) get this error message (@XP). It is
usually not that important though, because the output is often correctly
generated. I sometimes think it has to do with updating a dvi which is
viewed by yap, but to be honest, I don't have a clue what is wrong.

This is with lyx 1.6.1. I have just installed texlive thinking this might
fix it but no change.

We need to know what system you are on. On Linux, the best export is
tex4ht. There is a special script oolatex that creates the .odt file.

I don't know how it works on Windows.

A colleague of mine is using a combination of two projects: 
winfig: http://www.schmidt-web-berlin.de/winfig/
and jfig: http://tams-www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/applets/jfig/

jfig for drawing and fig2dev from winfig for converting (fig2dev from jfig 
does not export pdflatex)

You mean I could avoid with ERT at the hyphenated line? Like
"\hyphenpenalty1"? Doesn´t seem like a long term solution, especially
for longer documents. Is this going to be revised in a newer version of
Latex?

connotations including easy fingerpainting and amateurish type layout.

I've often referred to LyX as a "typesetting program", but of course this 
might intimidate people just beginning to consider LyX.

Contemplating the styles created by most MS Word "Power Users"* I can regard 
that "shortcoming" as a major advantage.

* Most regular MS Word users don't know what "Style" means.

control M again to get regular letters. Make them italic.
Then get out of that box, and type a regular math equation with \bar{e}

You an directly insert this character to your LyX document from the Insert->Special 
Character->Symbols dialog or from another program.

\brokenpenalty=1

 This avoid hyphenation at the end of a page.

\hyphenpenalty=1
 you avoid hyphenation in all lines in the entire document.
 If you put a lower number, like 200 or 500, you reduce the number of word 
hyphenated in all lines in the whole documente.
 \brokenpenalty is for your case.

Export to Open document

Hi,
I am trying to export a lyx document into an open document, I press export,
but then no files are created.
Can someone help?
The reason is I am trying to get the file into an MS Word file so my
supervisor can open it.

Yes, I'm the guy usually bringing this up :-)

The ability to save LyX documents as a wiki page and load a wiki page 
into Lyx. In non-lyx environment there might be a wiki page for 
information sharing/documentation, and if you can edit the wiki page 
through LyX, well, that would be very nice, when one consideres the 
(lack of?) edit-friendlyness in wiki.


I agree that wiki pages aren't that easy to edit. Some tools exist to edit 
the pages in a separate text editor, and I'm pretty sure WYSIWYGI tools 
are on their way as well.


However, note that AFAICT, it's "only" the following functionality that 
you gain:


1. The document is stored in a common area (the wiki) and can be edited
   using LyX..

2. The document (i.e. wiki page) is stored so that's it's easily visible
   and searchable through a regular browser

3. The document is editable also through the web browser.

The first functionality could just as well be implemented by several other 
means, e.g. by using a VCS to upload files to a public repository. This 
would also give you additional functionality.


The second functionality could also be implemented by uploading 
(comitting/pushing) not only the .LyX-file, but also a .html-version of 
the file. And a PDF while you're at it. Alternatively, the system could 
automatically generate a PDF/HTML-file on the server once a .lyx-file has 
been uploaded (comitted/pushed).


The third functionality is more difficult though.

Why am I saying this? Well, I think it's important to ask ourselves what 
the collaboration functions are... to me the number one functionality 
would be to let several people edit the same document at once.

Sorry for the late answer. I did check the paths for the converters, but I
couldn't find anything. In windows installation, the "scripts" folder which
contains the converters, is inside of "Resources" i tried the change the
path name, but i ended up getting the same error.

the original command:
python -tt $$s/scripts/fig2pdftex.py $$i $$o

i tried to change to
python -tt $$s/resources/scripts/fig2pdftex.py $$i $$o
or
python -tt $$s/Resources/scripts/fig2pdftex.py $$i $$o

but it didn't work.

I'm not sure, but I expect that whatever program LyX uses to convert
fig files into a form that LaTeX can use >doesn't exist on your Windows
machine. Check under Tools>Preferences>Converters, and find out what
that is.

I often (not always, but very often) get this error message (@XP). It is
usually not that important though, because the output is often correctly
generated. I sometimes think it has to do with updating a dvi which is
viewed by yap, but to be honest, I don't have a clue what is wrong.

This is with lyx 1.6.1. I have just installed texlive thinking this might
fix it but no change.

We need to know what system you are on. On Linux, the best export is
tex4ht. There is a special script oolatex that creates the .odt file.

I don't know how it works on Windows.
