is the theorem (AMS) numbering inside LyX (on the screen) customizable ?

2009-04-27 Thread Pierrick Mellerin
Hello,

I have searched the mailing list archives to find any answer to my problem
without any result, so I post this message.

I would like to know if there is a solution to customize the theorem AMS
numbering inside LyX (by default, LyX displays (on the screen): Theorem 1,
Lemma 2, Corolary 3 etc) for having the same numbering than in the LaTeX
output ?

By example, something like that: Theorem 1, Lemma 1, Corolary 1, Theorem 2
etc and, with the theorems (by section) enabled: Theorem 1.1, Lemma 1.1,
Corolary 1.1, Theorem 2.1, Lemma 2.1 etc.

I have tested many hacks in the layout files without solution.

Thanks in advance.

This controls when the counters are reset. Resetting by section will

question re citation

2009-04-27 Thread Wolfgang Engelmann
Dear list members

I need again your help.
In a document (Lyx1.6.1) I get an error message
TeX capacity exceeded
cite{a reference}{319}{13.5.3}{section*.37}
If you really absolutely need more capacity ...

I tried to remove the citation from the text for a later inspection what was
going wrong with it, by putting it in a yellow note-box and re-ran the
pdf-latex preview. It still gave the same error message. If I click on the
citation and in the lyx literature box click on the reference and try to
remove it (remove, ok) it is not removed.
Now, interestingly, the same happens also if I am removing the citation
completely from the text. I have to leave the lyx session and restart it
again in order to get rid of it.
I guess it has to do with the aux file which is still existing and contains
the citation it is chocking on.
[By the way, (I do not think it has to do with it) I am producing (and
inserting) the citations via a JabRef bib-file.]

It is annoying to have to restart the session for each removal. Is there a
better way?

Do not ask for a simple example, because there is none. It is a long document
of about 500 pages and many figures (~400) and it was written with one of the
1.5 versions of lyx and I wanted to update it using the (much more handy) lyx
1.6 version.

I have asked for the error I am getting regarding the citations before, it
seems to have to do with the Koma-book 2 column style and the braking of the
citations; a remedy is to put the offending citation on a slightly different
location. Having done this, it might happen afterward with a different
citation. It happens, if I have several citations together. So this is not
the issue, I know how do deal with it.

1.6.2 Spelling Check Issue

documents. However, those attempts at addition appear to not work. The next
time I check the same document, the same words are flagged for correction.

Where do I look for a reason for this behavior?

Differences in Output Quality?

2009-04-27 Thread Rich Shepard

Question for folks here: will pdf output display differently if I insert
figures as .eps or .pdf?

In the first case, I need to export to plain LaTeX, run latex a couple of
times on the resulting .tex file, then dvips followed by ps2pdf. In the
second case I export using pdflatex.

When I use the first approach I see higher quality in xpdf than I do with
acroread, but I know that most (if not all) of the people who will be
reading this document will do so using Acrobat's Reader on a Microsoft
system so I'd like higher output for that viewer.

Beamer Class Viewing

2009-04-27 Thread Rich Shepard

I've not prepared visuals for a while. Current installation is lyx-1.6.2
and beamer-3.0.7 (I think; it's freshly downloaded from CTAN and the
ChangeLog's most current entry is 2007-03-11). I see in that ChangeLog that
the LyX layout was removed because it's part of the LyX development tree.

What do I remove that used to be there?

When I try to view the developing presentation using pdflatex I get
errors. I also get errors if I try to view it with dvi because the included
graphics are .pdf format.

I'd greatly appreciate getting this working again very quickly as I need
to prepare visuals for about 13 hours of workshop I'm presenting in a couple
of weeks.

TIA,

text styles

2009-04-27 Thread tedc

I'm thinking of using LyX to write the 2nd edition of a book. The 1st edition
was done with OpenOffice, but production was a nightmare because OO didn't
fit with the publisher's workflow. The publisher had the whole thing
retyped, which introduced countless errors and generally broke formatting--a
major concern in this book which contains lots of source code, mathematical
symbols, chemical reaction notation etc..

The publisher will accept LaTeX, which gives LyX a tremendous potential
advantage. Exporting from OO to tex does damage some of the formatting, but
it does preserve many essentials such as index tags. The resulting files
import into LyX, seem to work more or less with the publisher's cls file,
and it looks like I can repair the broken formatting with LyX.

I do have one question, though. The OO file used text styles to specify
the formatting of inline source code, names of GUI tools, and chapter
crossreferences. In LyX these show up as ERT, like the boldfaced bit here:
\textstyleInlinecode{for i=0,n-1}
When I click on View DVI, these generate Undefined control sequence
errors.

I could, of course, use sed or awk to replace these with LyX markup that
would force the correct typeface (in this case, the typewriter family),
but I'd rather leave the markup unchanged, and have LyX or LaTeX figure out
what to do.

So my question is: how do I tell LyX or LaTeX that
\textstyleInlinecode{for i=0,n-1}
means to render
for i=0,n-1
with a specified typeface? or at least as typewriter?

There are going to be a lot of ways to do this. But I think all of them
will involve using sed or whatever to replace this kind of command with
something more sensible, preferably, a LyX character style. I think the
way to go here would be to do the import into LyX and then write a
script to convert things that will look more or less like this:

\begin_inset ERT
\begin_layout Plain Layout

\textstyleInlinecode{for i=0,n-1}
\end_layout
\end_inset

with something more like this:

\begin_layout Flex CharStyle:Code
status closed

\begin_layout Plain Layout

for i=0,n=1
\end_layout
\end_inset

This is easy, eventually, though fiddly.

In this case, you can use the Logical Markup module, which already
defines the Code charstyle. In other cases, you may want to roll your own.

Lyx has an option to specify a typewriter face. Simply highlight the text,
click on Edit-Text Style-Customized, and under Family select Typewriter.
Then check what it does to the code, and do a global replace to get all

citation and in the lyx literature box click on the reference and try to
remove it (remove, ok) it is not removed.

I'm not sure I understand. The LyX numbering does match the output in my
case. Both are as you described. Is the question how to get both as you
next put it?

By example, something like that: Theorem 1, Lemma 1, Corolary 1, Theorem 2
etc and, with the theorems (by section) enabled: Theorem 1.1, Lemma 1.1,
 Corolary 1.1, Theorem 2.1, Lemma 2.1 etc.

To get this sort of thing, you need to copy the existing theorem layout
material and replace things like:
  \newtheorem{cor}[thm]{Corollary}
with things like:
  \newtheorem{cor}{Corollary}
The LyX counter can then be defined roughly as follows:
Counter corollary
EndCounter
And then change to use this counter in the Corollary section.

1.6.2 Spelling Check Issue

I don't recall having this problem before: when I check spelling in a
document I add words and variants of words that appear in multiple

I've not prepared visuals for a while. Current installation is lyx-1.6.2
and beamer-3.0.7 (I think; it's freshly downloaded from CTAN and the
ChangeLog's most current entry is 2007-03-11). I see in that ChangeLog that
the LyX layout was removed because it's part of the LyX development tree.

What do I remove that used to be there?

When I try to view the developing presentation using pdflatex I get
errors. I also get errors if I try to view it with dvi because the included
graphics are .pdf format.

I'd greatly appreciate getting this working again very quickly as I need
to prepare visuals for about 13 hours of workshop I'm presenting in a couple
of weeks.

\textstyleInlinecode{for i=0,n-1}
When I click on View DVI, these generate Undefined control sequence
errors.

I could, of course, use sed or awk to replace these with LyX markup that
would force the correct typeface (in this case, the typewriter family),
but I'd rather leave the markup unchanged, and have LyX or LaTeX figure out
what to do.

So my question is: how do I tell LyX or LaTeX that
\textstyleInlinecode{for i=0,n-1}
means to render
for i=0,n-1
with a specified typeface? or at least as typewriter?

There are going to be a lot of ways to do this. But I think all of them
will involve using sed or whatever to replace this kind of command with
something more sensible, preferably, a LyX character style. I think the
way to go here would be to do the import into LyX and then write a
script to convert things that will look more or less like this:

\begin_inset ERT
\begin_layout Plain Layout

\textstyleInlinecode{for i=0,n-1}
\end_layout
\end_inset

with something more like this:

\begin_layout Flex CharStyle:Code
status closed

\begin_layout Plain Layout

for i=0,n=1
\end_layout
\end_inset

This is easy, eventually, though fiddly.

In this case, you can use the Logical Markup module, which already
defines the Code charstyle. In other cases, you may want to roll your own.

Lyx has an option to specify a typewriter face. Simply highlight the text,
click on Edit-Text Style-Customized, and under Family select Typewriter.
Then check what it does to the code, and do a global replace to get all

To get this sort of thing, you need to copy the existing theorem layout
material and replace things like:
  \newtheorem{cor}[thm]{Corollary}
with things like:
  \newtheorem{cor}{Corollary}
The LyX counter can then be defined roughly as follows:
Counter corollary
EndCounter
And then change to use this counter in the Corollary section.

Yes I did. I have only file1 and file2 selected, but choosing insert does not
insert file2 if I am at the end of file1.

Therefore I used copy/paste, as you suggested. I was afraid to do that,
because selecting a long text usually/often crashes; but I found the
select all
under bearbeiten
and copied that. It worked.

1.6.2 Spelling Check Issue

2009-04-27 Thread Rich Shepard

I don't recall having this problem before: when I check spelling in a
document I add words and variants of words that appear in multiple
documents. However, those attempts at addition appear to not work. The next
time I check the same document, the same words are flagged for correction.

Where do I look for a reason for this behavior?

Please use a more descriptive subject. Other than "A question", "A
simple question" or "some doubts".

Richard already told you to search on the list. The answer has been
given on this list three days ago. Please have a look at that.

You can edit the files at your own and

copy them in your personal directory, e.g.

\url{}: Bad bounding box in Type 3 glyph

2009-04-27 Thread Rich Shepard

I'm using the \url package and when I display a page with xpdf with
several URLs on it, I get the console message, Error: Bad bounding box in
Type 3 glyph.

Is this due to an outdated package, or something else?

Hmm, is there some way to get a list of all the stuff used to create a
document, e.g.:

* Included files and images
* LaTeX packages and document class
* Other support software

I guess you could parse the LaTeX log file to get some of this, but is
there a way to know which software LyX uses when e.g. generating images to
be shown inside LyX?

1.6.2 instability with multiple child docs, OSX?

2009-04-27 Thread Andrew Sullivan
Hi,

Is anyone else having problems with instability and multiple child
docs? I've had LyX crash about 1/2 a dozen times today alone with
this. (It just vanishes.)

If there is some place I'm likely to find a backtrace, I'm happy to
share it privately.

I'd greatly appreciate getting this working again very quickly as I need
to prepare visuals for about 13 hours of workshop I'm presenting in a couple
of weeks.

TIA,

Rich

The OO file used "text styles" to specify
the formatting of inline source code, names of GUI tools, and chapter
crossreferences. In LyX these show up as ERT, like the boldfaced bit here:
\textstyleInlinecode{for i=0,n-1}
When I click on View DVI, these generate "Undefined control sequence"
errors.

I could, of course, use sed or awk to replace these with LyX markup that
would force the "correct" typeface (in this case, the typewriter family),
but I'd rather leave the markup unchanged, and have LyX or LaTeX figure out
what to do.

So my question is: how do I tell LyX or LaTeX that
\textstyleInlinecode{for i=0,n-1}
means to render
for i=0,n-1
with a specified typeface? or at least as "typewriter"?

There are going to be a lot of ways to do this. But I think all of them
will involve using sed or whatever to replace this kind of command with
something more sensible, preferably, a LyX character style. I think the
way to go here would be to do the import into LyX and then write a
script to convert things that will look more or less like this:

\begin_inset ERT
\begin_layout Plain Layout

\textstyleInlinecode{for i=0,n-1}
\end_layout
\end_inset

with something more like this:

\begin_layout Flex CharStyle:Code
status closed

\begin_layout Plain Layout

for i=0,n=1
\end_layout
\end_inset

This is easy, eventually, though fiddly.

In this case, you can use the Logical Markup module, which already
defines the Code charstyle. In other cases, you may want to roll your own.

Lyx has an option to specify a typewriter face. Simply highlight the text,
click on Edit->Text Style->Customized, and under "Family" select Typewriter.
Then check what it does to the code, and do a global replace to get all
occurrences.

Some issues were fixed in this area for forthcoming 1.6.3.
Anyway, if you can find a reliable way to reproduce it, you should report it
to the devel list or to trac:
http://www.lyx.org/trac/wiki/BugTrackerHome

A backtrace would be even better.
