Hallo people, I'm having an hard time using Lyx in Snow Leopard... I'm usin Lyx 1.6.3 right now because I cannot in any mode connect to the Lyx page and all relative pages (wiki, download, etc...), I don't know if the problem depends on that but I don't think so. I think there's some problem with Tex itself.. When I open Lyx and one of my documents and then click on the icon with pdf symbol, hoping for preview to open for me the pdf document, nothing happens. Same if I try to export the pdf or a vdi, anything, I cannot preview my documents (not even odt works). I googled a lot, downloaded TexShop 2.26 (I didn't have it before and all worked nevertheless) and nothing changed. Now I'm downloading MacTex again (very big file) but I don't think anything will be solved, there's something I'm missing. I even found this page: http://www.tug.org/mactex/faq/#qm10 and followed all indications. Something changed indeed. Now in Lyx I can see the LatexSource and I couldn't see it before (I never even knew it existed). So, any guess on what could my problem be please? greetings everyone, Luca
Re: problem with lyx equations on mac
Eric, I follow your exact steps and everything looks fine on my screen. I have also LyX 1.6.4.1, but my operating system is Snow Leopard (10.6.1). I could suspect this is related to MacOS 10.4 unless you have some special math fonts installed (I have only the standard MacTeX). I would suggest to forward this mail to the user group to see if there are any 10.4 users that can confirm the behavior. /Anders On 2 nov 2009, at 17.56, Eric Clarkson wrote: Anders, I am running Mac OS X 10.4.11. I type anything in the display box, say, the letter a. The letter a in bold appears in the display box. So far everything is fine. Now I click the cursor outside the display box. What normally happens at this point (on other versions of LyX and on this version of LyX with other Font choices) is that the equation is typeset and the little blue box disappears. What happens with the Bold font is quite different. The typeset bold letter a appears near the top of a large solid white box (the normal background, which appears around the box, is beige). The width of the white box is 8.25 inches. No matter how big I make the window, I have to scroll down to find the bottom of the white box, so I don't know how long it is. I can type normally above and below the white box. If I click the cursor anywhere in the white box, it goes back to the little blue outline display box. If I click the cursor outside the display box, then the big white box appears again. If I use the view menu and look at the PDF it looks normal, nothing unusual. I could work around these big white boxes, but I use the Bold font a lot in equations for vectors and matrices so this would be very annoying. I have tried reinstalling LyX and restarting the computer to no avail. Any assistance you could provide would be appreciated. Strange change..........
Hello everyone, Hope this isn't wasting anyone's time. This could be useful in the future if I knew how it was done? I use a template for my journal and have used the same one for years with few changes, however.. Today the Section used Typewriter font instead of Sans Serif font which is the usual font locked into the template, and I can't for the life of me see what I changed? I changed nothing in the preamble other than inserting the date as ever and closed out of document settings. So can only assume it was a key binding? I don't have any special key binding file. When I bring up the template anew, the Section comes up as it should Sans Serif font. It's not important, but just interesting how it was done, and as mentioned, it might be useful in the future. Any ideas? Creation of A5 documents
Hi! I wrote my thesis using the A4 format. Unfortunately now, I see that my university requires me to produce a copy in A5 format. I tried switching from A4 to A5, but I get that equations and algorithms don't fit anymore in the page. I don't know how to handle this. Is it possible to simply reduce everything proportionally to the page size? I will have very small symbols in formulas, but I don't think there is anything else I can do... Thanks for any advice. Cannot export to pdf in Mac OSX Snow Leopard
I click on the Set Display mode button on the Math toolbar and get the little blue outline display box for math. I click on the Fonts button on the Math Panel toolbar and select bold.
Any ideas? A branch that is "on" will be output when you print, a branch that is "off" will not. I have some documents with both Norwegian and English text. Norwegian paragraphs/headings then goes in a norwegian branch, English text in an english branch. Common stuff, such as figures, is not in any branch so they will always print. Quoting section 5 of the varioref manual: 5 A few warnings Defining commands like the ones described above poses some interesting problems. Suppose, for example, that a generated text like ‘on the next page’ gets broken across pages. If this happens it is very difficult to find an acceptable solution and in fact can even result in a document that will always change from one state to another (i.e., inserting one string, finding that this is wrong, inserting another string on the next run which makes the first string correct again, inserting . . . ). The current implementation of varioref therefore issues an error message whenever the generated text is broken across page boundaries, e.g., table 5 on the current page would would result in an error, which needs to be resolved by the user by replacing the \vref command with an ordinary \ref just before the final run. This is not completely satisfactory but in such case no solution really is. During document preparation, while one is still changing the text, such error messages can be turned into warnings by placing a \vrefwarning command in the preamble. This is equivalent to specifying "draft" as an option to the package. \vrefshowerrors ensures that varioref stops when detecting a possible loop. This is the default and equivalent to specifying "final" as an option. At the end final a warning: every use of \vref will internally generate two macro names to keep track of the string positions within the document. As a result you may run out of name space or main memory if you make heavy use of this macro on a small TEX installation. For this reason the primitive command \fullref is also provided. This command can be used whenever you know for sure that label and reference can’t fall onto nearby pages. Jürgen

I need to insert a frontpage with some informations, but I see this document class doesn't allow an abstract and some other things, like the address. I can recommend to use the class "book (koma-script)" instead of "book". With this class you have everything you need: abstract, titlepage, dedication, etc. I have build a thesis template using this class. You can download it from http://fkurth.de/uwest/LyX/ThesisTemplate/ regards Uwe
Re: Symbol for >=
All the LaTeX symbols are here: http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/comprehensive.html - Original Message - From: "Helge Hafting"To: "nikunj ." (Not >= or <= ) Is there any guide for latex symbols ? Turn on the math toolbars. You can then pick symbols from toolbar menus. Learn the codes for those you use most often, that way you can type them faster than picking from menus. For example, \geq (or \geqslant ) to get greater-or-equal signs. Helge Hafting
Cannot export to pdf in Mac OSX Snow Leopard
I open a new document with LyX version 1.6.4.1. I have the Math and Math Panels toolbars open at the bottom of the window. I click on the Set Display mode button on the Math toolbar and get the little blue outline display box for math. I click on the Fonts button on the Math Panel toolbar and select "bold". I type anything in the display box, say, the letter "a". The letter "a" in bold appears in the display box. So far everything is fine. Now I click the cursor outside the display box. What normally happens at this point (on other versions of LyX and on this version of LyX with other Font choices) is that the equation is typeset and the little blue box disappears. What happens with the Bold font is quite different. The typeset bold letter "a" appears near the top of a large solid white box (the normal background, which appears around the box, is beige). Nothing else appears in the box and I have to scroll down to get out of the box and see what follows the equation. This only happens with mathbold characters, other special fonts do not create this effect. Eric, I can't reproduce this. can you send a more elaborate step-by- step description? /Anders
Strange change..........
Hello everyone, Hope this isn't wasting anyone's time. This could be useful in the future if I knew how it was done? I use a template for my journal and have used the same one for years with few changes, however.. Today the "Section" used Typewriter font instead of Sans Serif font which is the usual font locked into the template, and I can't for the life of me see what I changed? I changed nothing in the preamble other than inserting the date as ever and closed out of document settings. So can only assume it was a key binding? I don't have any special key binding file. When I bring up the template anew, the "Section" comes up as it should Sans Serif font. It's not important, but just interesting how it was done, and as mentioned, it might be useful in the future. Any ideas? Creating the "\independent" binary relation within LyX (for independent random variables)
Hi Everyone, Could someone please let me know how to create the following symbol within LyX, I presume within a Math macro? The LaTeX code that one puts in the preamble is: \newcommand\independent{\protect\mathpalette{\protect\independenT}{\perp}} \def\independenT#1#2{\mathrel{\rlap{$#1#2$}\mkern2mu{#1#2}}} This creates the binary independence relation symbol found in problem 1 of this document, for example: http://ssli.ee.washington.edu/~bilmes/ee512fa09/hw1.pdf Essentially, I need to fix one "\perp", copy it and move it over a couple units the right to create this symbol. Any help on how to do this is much appreciated... Thanks, Adam

I suspect this is related to lack of some software needed. Try to see if you have ps2pdf and anything else LyX depends on. Mactex should solve the problem I suppose. Luca Carlon

Question on custumising index
Dear All I am (representing my friends as well) actually searching a way to custumise index, in book(Koma-script), so the it looks like A alpha info alpha2 info1 info 2 B ... ... If I use index entry (in LyX) {A ! subentry ! subsubentry} the result is close but subentry will be indented A subentry subsubentry How can I get the index with an alphabetical separator as I mention above? Thanks you for any help or information Regards waluyo --

Re: Creation of A5 documents
Luca Carlon wrote: Hi! Luca Hi, In case you have not already tried, for A5, try using a base font size of 10 (Document settings-> Fonts). Best regards, Olivier
