Not an expert, but the main problem would be to find a font that
contains the characters. Did you try this page [1]? Also, try
searching for latex yat cyrillic and the like.

code(*) and file names, respectively. I'd like to tell LyX never to 
spell check words in these two styles, as code variables are most often 
not valid English words. Is this possible (at the layout module level, 
preferably) ?

problem installing lyx

I have installed Lyx (last version 1.6) on a Miktex 2.8 version and Lyx
is unable to find any document class (see below the copy of the
textclass.lst).

I tried the lyx installation twice.

Miktex'installation doesn't seem to be wrong.

Do you know where should be the problem?

Do I have to register on the mailing list to receive an answer? (I 'm
not currently registered )

In LyX 1.6: no.

In LyX 2.0: yes. Use
Spellcheck  0
in the character style definition.

Unicode utf8x, and printing to pdf is attempted, Lyx returns an error:

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

So. it appears nobody has used LyX for the purpose of typesetting old Russian or
Church Slavonic texts. So unfortunate :-(

there that might be of help.

I think that the letter at least have to be included in the list of unicode 
symbols with its LaTeX encoding:

and ERT boxes.

You might want to try the development version of LyX, since in SVN LyX
has some support for XeTeX [1]. The wiki has something [2] on the
subject, too. I am not familiar with it, but it seems to let you use
in LyX any of the system fonts. And since Slavonic characters [3] are
correctly displayed in my browser, I can only assume that LyX with
XeTeX can readily display those.

Latex-illiterate, so the Latex techniques are pretty much useless to me at the
moment - I can't apply them to LyX. I tried some basic stuff, like modifying the
Latex preamble with what I could find on the Internet, but that, of course, did
not work.

There is a very promising link was about writing in Devanagri using LyX and
XeLatex

if writing in Devanagri is possible, writing in old Russian should also be a

Is it possible to set the language in a character style?
Is it possible to choose a language that is not checked?

 In LyX 2.0: yes. Use
   Spellcheck  0
 in the character style definition.

Well, it works for me: those words are ignored in spellchecking and the 
pdf export does not seem affected. So that's exactly what I was looking 
for. Thanks!

No, not if I reply privately.

The first thing to try is ToolsReconfigure. The next is to look at the 
mailing list archives. This issue comes up all the time. Just two days 
ago, if I remember right.

There are two ways to get the old cyrillic letters into LyX:

a) enhance the unicodesymbols file that defines LaTeX replacements, or

b) use XeTeX with a Unicode font that contains the required characters.

For a)
  we need to know the LaTeX replacement code, i.e. a working LaTeX file
  that can serve as example and/or documentation about writing
  old orthography/church slavonic with LaTeX.
  
  Most probably the symbols are already present and easily accessible
  in LaTeX and only need to be added to the unicodesymbols file.
  Look in the font encodings guide (encguide.pdf) for the symbol and in
  cyoutenc.pdf for the corresponding LaTeX command.
  In this case you can even do this in your local configuration: copy
  unicodesymbols from the system LYXDIR to your personal LYXDIR
  (~/.lyx on unix) and add the definitions.
  
  

  A similar job has been done for old (polytonic) Greek recently.

For b)
  there are many suitable Unicode fonts (Gentium, Libertine,
  OldStandard come to my mind). Using XeTeX with LyX is described in
  the wiki (search for XeTeX at http://wiki.lyx.org). The next LyX
  release comes with greatly improved XeTeX support.

One possible solution is the following:

1. Try to locate the unicodesymbols file (it's in the LyX's lib/resource
directory, but I'm not sure where this is on Ubuntu).

2. Add a line line

0x0462 \\textcyr{\\char176} textcyr  # CYRILLIC HISTORIC SMALL
LETTER YAT

to this file after the line:

0x045f \\textcyr{\\char182} textcyr  # CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER
DZHE

3. In LyX:

Insert-Special Character-Symbols, Category=Cyrillic.

At the end of the list of symbols shown, there will be a square. This is
your Yat character. If you insert this character in your document it
will be outputted correctly as the yat (although it will look like a
square in LyX).

Alternatively, you can enter in the command buffer: unicode-insert
0462 and probably it will work too when using the Character Map.

week for, oh, several months now. It's the only version of LyX I've used 
recently, and I think it's brilliant. I've been on the lookout for problems, 
but don't have a developer's eye, and haven't seen any. There *is* an issue 
with backwards compatibility, so I'd make copies of the .lyx files one wants to 
edit, and work on the copies, just in case they can't be reopened with an 
earlier version.

   I understand that it won't be released until it's ready, but for me, it's 
ready.

Run LyX, open the .lyx file, and try View  (something) to see if you 
get a finished document.  The choice of something depends on what 
format you want for the final document.  For instance, if you want to 
end up with the document as a PDF file, I'd try View  PDF (pdflatex).


If you get what you want, you can either save a permanent copy from the 
viewer program that LyX opened (for instance, Acrobat Reader if it's a 
PDF file), or you can use File  Export  (something) with the same 
choice of something to generate an output file in the same directory 
where the .lyx file lives.

I may not be Curtis, but I can answer that question.  In short, yes.

I've also been running the SVN version of LyX for several months and have
used it to write nearly the complete text of a book.  I've been really happy
with it.  It's gotten a great deal more stable in the past few months and
several of the new features are wonderful (my favorites are easy support for
XeTeX, Sweave integration via a module, and the real time spell-checking).

I'd recommend that after compiling that you manually specify a differ user
and system directory, though.  This will ensure that you don't have problems
with the system installed version of LyX.

Lyx2 -sysdir /path/to/sys/directory -userdir /path/to/user/directory

discussion on the developer list about it and I've been scared to update to

 You might want to try the development version of LyX, since in SVN LyX
 has some support for XeTeX [1]. The wiki has something [2] on the
 subject, too. I am not familiar with it, but it seems to let you use
 in LyX any of the system fonts. And since Slavonic characters [3] are
 correctly displayed in my browser, I can only assume that LyX with
 XeTeX can readily display those.

date for a version of Lyx that includes continuous spelling? Or will it come 
with version 2.0? 

I don't think I am the only one who has been fervently waiting for this 
feature for quite some time. (Or so I hope. I can't be the only typing-
challenged user...)

  Please allow a contrarian opinion. While I'm a touch-typist and do hit the
wrong keys on occasion, I _strongly_ dislike runtime spell checking as well
as any other intrusive corrections. I find it quite distracting whether
typing from hand-written text or creating anew. I also don't like software
that pretends to be smarter than I am by, for example, automatically
changing case after punctuation. It cannot recognize abbreviations or other
contexts where an uppercase letter is inappropriate.

  When I'm done for a bit I'll manually check spelling (unless I forget, of
course), but much prefer to determine when it's done.

  If there's a switch to turn off continuous checking I'll have no issues;
it'll just be another feature for me to disable.

I have, but I couldn't find any reference to LyX 2.0 in the Branches folder of
the lyx-devel repository. The latest folder was Branch 1.6. I must have been
looking at the wrong place :-(

  2. How and when is a copier invoked? For exporting latex with inline
  bibliography, I will need to:
  (1) generate the latex file from lyx,
  (2) run latex on this file to generate the .aux file,
  (3) run bibtex on the .aux file,
  (4) replace the bibtex bibliography command with the .bbl file text as
  you mentioned.

 The first two are easy. We define a new format, say ltx2, and define a
 LyX--ltx2 converter, with the needaux extra flag set. (See
 Customization, section 3.3.) The last is of course what your python
 script will do. The third will probably also have to be done from your
 python script, though this shouldn't be very difficult. You might also
 want to suggest a new flag, bibtex, that would cause LyX to run bibtex
 as well as latex. This would be useful in other situations, I am sure.

./configure and got the following errors:

   is correctly installed on your system.

** Cannot find X window libraries and/or headers.

If I am not mistaken, you're on Ubuntu. You will need to install a
bunch of development packages: zlib1g-dev, liqt4-dev, etc. I am not
sure how to quickly get all the necessary components: try installing
some, and then watch how ./configure complains, and install some more
until ./configure passes.

The problem is a combination of full justification of the bibliography (the
default for most document classes) and long, unbreakable URLs.  One option,
depending on the ultimate destination of the document, is to left justify the
bibliography.  (Some journals are remarkably finicky about formatting, and might
object to left justification.)  If you are using an inserted BibTeX
bibliography, just put the cursor in the line with the BibTeX Generated
Bibliography widget and use the paragraph settings button to switch to left
justification.  Something similar will work with a directly inserted 
bibliography.

The alternative would be to break up the URLs into manageable chunks, either by
hyphenating or by inserting spaces.  I'm not fond of either approach, as the
reader will sometimes mistake a hyphen or space for a literal part of the URL.

Sideways table using Memoir

I'm writing a book with LyX using the Memoir class and I'd like to 
rotate a table.  I can select the table float properties and set it to 
be a sideways table, but then I get the following errors.  I've tried to

Not an expert, but the main problem would be to find a font that

excluding a character style from spellchecking

spell check words in these two styles, as code variables are most often 
not valid English words. Is this possible (at the layout module level,

problem installing lyx

is unable to find any document class (see below the copy of the
textclass.lst).

I tried the lyx installation twice.

Miktex'installation doesn't seem to be wrong.

Do you know where should be the problem?

Do I have to register on the mailing list to receive an answer? (I 'm
not currently registered )

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

So. it appears nobody has used LyX for the purpose of typesetting old Russian or
Church Slavonic texts. So unfortunate :-(

I think that the letter at least have to be included in the list of unicode 
symbols with its LaTeX encoding:

You might want to try the development version of LyX, since in SVN LyX
has some support for XeTeX [1]. The wiki has something [2] on the
subject, too. I am not familiar with it, but it seems to let you use
in LyX any of the system fonts. And since Slavonic characters [3] are
correctly displayed in my browser, I can only assume that LyX with
XeTeX can readily display those.

I did. The trouble is, as I said from the start, I am practically
Latex-illiterate, so the Latex techniques are pretty much useless to me at the
moment - I can't apply them to LyX. I tried some basic stuff, like modifying the
Latex preamble with what I could find on the Internet, but that, of course, did
not work.

There is a very promising link was about writing in Devanagri using LyX and

Is it possible to set the language in a character style?
Is it possible to choose a language that is not checked?

 In LyX 2.0: yes. Use
   Spellcheck  0

Well, it works for me: those words are ignored in spellchecking and the 
pdf export does not seem affected. So that's exactly what I was looking 
for. Thanks!

There are two ways to get the old cyrillic letters into LyX:

a) enhance the unicodesymbols file that defines LaTeX replacements, or

b) use XeTeX with a Unicode font that contains the required characters.

For a)
  we need to know the LaTeX replacement code, i.e. a working LaTeX file
  that can serve as example and/or documentation about writing
  old orthography/church slavonic with LaTeX.
  
  Most probably the symbols are already present and easily accessible
  in LaTeX and only need to be added to the unicodesymbols file.
  Look in the font encodings guide (encguide.pdf) for the symbol and in
  cyoutenc.pdf for the corresponding LaTeX command.
  In this case you can even do this in your local configuration: copy
  unicodesymbols from the system LYXDIR to your personal LYXDIR
  (~/.lyx on unix) and add the definitions.
  
  

  A similar job has been done for old (polytonic) Greek recently.

For b)
  there are many suitable Unicode fonts (Gentium, Libertine,
  OldStandard come to my mind). Using XeTeX with LyX is described in
  the wiki (search for XeTeX at http://wiki.lyx.org). The next LyX
  release comes with greatly improved XeTeX support.

The problem arouse when I needed to insert some obsolete Russian
characters that were used before the 20th century. Namely, the letters
yat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yat), fita
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fita) or izhitsa
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izhitsa): if I insert them to LyX via
Character Map,
LyX refuses to produce a pdf, complaining that it can't recognize these
characters. Is there any way to solve this problem?

One possible solution is the following:

1. Try to locate the unicodesymbols file (it's in the LyX's lib/resource
directory, but I'm not sure where this is on Ubuntu).

2. Add a line line

0x0462 \\textcyr{\\char176} textcyr  # CYRILLIC HISTORIC SMALL
LETTER YAT

to this file after the line:

0x045f \\textcyr{\\char182} textcyr  # CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER
DZHE

3. In LyX:

Insert-Special Character-Symbols, Category=Cyrillic.

At the end of the list of symbols shown, there will be a square. This is
your Yat character. If you insert this character in your document it
will be outputted correctly as the yat (although it will look like a
square in LyX).

Alternatively, you can enter in the command buffer: unicode-insert
0462 and probably it will work too when using the Character Map.

   I've been downloading and compiling the svn sources for 2.0 about once a 
week for, oh, several months now. It's the only version of LyX I've used 
recently, and I think it's brilliant. I've been on the lookout for problems, 
but don't have a developer's eye, and haven't seen any. There *is* an issue 
with backwards compatibility, so I'd make copies of the .lyx files one wants to 
edit, and work on the copies, just in case they can't be reopened with an 
earlier version.

   I understand that it won't be released until it's ready, but for me, it's 
ready.

Run LyX, open the .lyx file, and try View  (something) to see if you 
get a finished document.  The choice of something depends on what 
format you want for the final document.  For instance, if you want to 
end up with the document as a PDF file, I'd try View  PDF (pdflatex).


If you get what you want, you can either save a permanent copy from the 
viewer program that LyX opened (for instance, Acrobat Reader if it's a 
PDF file), or you can use File  Export  (something) with the same 
choice of something to generate an output file in the same directory 
where the .lyx file lives.

I may not be Curtis, but I can answer that question.  In short, yes.

I've also been running the SVN version of LyX for several months and have
used it to write nearly the complete text of a book.  I've been really happy
with it.  It's gotten a great deal more stable in the past few months and
several of the new features are wonderful (my favorites are easy support for
XeTeX, Sweave integration via a module, and the real time spell-checking).

I'd recommend that after compiling that you manually specify a differ user
and system directory, though.  This will ensure that you don't have problems
with the system installed version of LyX.

Lyx2 -sysdir /path/to/sys/directory -userdir /path/to/user/directory

  Please allow a contrarian opinion. While I'm a touch-typist and do hit the
wrong keys on occasion, I _strongly_ dislike runtime spell checking as well
as any other intrusive corrections. I find it quite distracting whether
typing from hand-written text or creating anew. I also don't like software
that pretends to be smarter than I am by, for example, automatically
changing case after punctuation. It cannot recognize abbreviations or other
contexts where an uppercase letter is inappropriate.

  When I'm done for a bit I'll manually check spelling (unless I forget, of
course), but much prefer to determine when it's done.

  If there's a switch to turn off continuous checking I'll have no issues;
it'll just be another feature for me to disable.

the lyx-devel repository. The latest folder was Branch 1.6. I must have been
looking at the wrong place :-(

forthcoming major release takes place in trunk and the minor
(maintenance) releases are prepared in branches.

I guess that you should try `trunk'. Probably the following should suffice:

refs.

  2. How and when is a copier invoked? For exporting latex with inline
  bibliography, I will need to:
  (1) generate the latex file from lyx,
  (2) run latex on this file to generate the .aux file,
  (3) run bibtex on the .aux file,

  Please allow a contrarian opinion. While I'm a touch-typist and do hit the
wrong keys on occasion, I _strongly_ dislike runtime spell checking as well
as any other intrusive corrections. I find it quite distracting whether
typing from hand-written text or creating anew. I also don't like software
that pretends to be smarter than I am by, for example, automatically
changing case after punctuation. It cannot recognize abbreviations or other
contexts where an uppercase letter is inappropriate.

  When I'm done for a bit I'll manually check spelling (unless I forget, of
course), but much prefer to determine when it's done.

  If there's a switch to turn off continuous checking I'll have no issues;
it'll just be another feature for me to disable.

If I am not mistaken, you're on Ubuntu. You will need to install a
bunch of development packages: zlib1g-dev, liqt4-dev, etc. I am not
sure how to quickly get all the necessary components: try installing
some, and then watch how ./configure complains, and install some more
until ./configure passes.

The problem is a combination of full justification of the bibliography (the
default for most document classes) and long, unbreakable URLs.  One option,
depending on the ultimate destination of the document, is to left justify the
bibliography.  (Some journals are remarkably finicky about formatting, and might
object to left justification.)  If you are using an inserted BibTeX
bibliography, just put the cursor in the line with the BibTeX Generated
Bibliography widget and use the paragraph settings button to switch to left
justification.  Something similar will work with a directly inserted 
bibliography.

The alternative would be to break up the URLs into manageable chunks, either by
hyphenating or by inserting spaces.  I'm not fond of either approach, as the
reader will sometimes mistake a hyphen or space for a literal part of the URL.

Sideways table using Memoir

I'm writing a book with LyX using the Memoir class and I'd like to 
rotate a table.  I can select the table float properties and set it to 
be a sideways table, but then I get the following errors.  I've tried to 
shorten the LaTeX output to just the relevant parts, but let me know if

Not an expert, but the main problem would be to find a font that
contains the characters. Did you try this page [1]? Also, try
searching for "latex yat cyrillic" and the like.

problem installing lyx

I have installed Lyx (last version 1.6) on a Miktex 2.8 version and Lyx
is unable to find any document class (see below the copy of the
textclass.lst).

I tried the lyx installation twice.

Miktex'installation doesn't seem to be wrong.

Do you know where should be the problem?

Do I have to register on the mailing list to receive an answer? (I 'm

In LyX 1.6: no.

In LyX 2.0: yes. Use
Spellcheck  0
in the character style definition.

Unicode utf8x, and printing to pdf is attempted, Lyx returns an error:

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

So. it appears nobody has used LyX for the purpose of typesetting old Russian or
Church Slavonic texts. So unfortunate :-(

I think that the letter at least have to be included in the list of unicode 
symbols with its LaTeX encoding:

You might want to try the development version of LyX, since in SVN LyX
has some support for XeTeX [1]. The wiki has something [2] on the
subject, too. I am not familiar with it, but it seems to let you use
in LyX any of the system fonts. And since Slavonic characters [3] are
correctly displayed in my browser, I can only assume that LyX with
XeTeX can readily display those.

Can you post an example file that triggers this error?
