Why did you download from CTAN? To get a special version?

Debian has texlive within its package system. So the standard way
of installing texlive on Debian, is something like:

apt-get install texlive

If you want *all* of texlive, even the lesser used stuff:

apt-get install texlive-full

This command will both download and install texlive. Texlive will then
work, without any further action.

Is this LyX 1.6.x or the alpha release of 2.0? Either way, what HTML
converter are you using? It sounds as if it is either elyxer or, if
you're in 2.0, then LyX's native XHTML output.

If you're using elyxer, then there is not really anything you can do.

WRONG: you can ask the elyxer developer whether support for these
constructs, providing sample input (and preferabely expected output).

 elyxer's math support is pretty basic;

but steadily improving (and for this depends on user feedback).

 You might therefore want to
uninstall elyxer (I'm sorry, but that is what you would have to do),
reconfigure LyX, and try using htlatex, which has its own issues but
handles math better, since it does it all via images. (Of course, that
can lead to scaling problems, etc, but at least you get decent output.)

You might want to try whether htlatex supports the polynom package
with a manual conversion (export to LaTeX and call htlatex from the
command line) first. Or instead of uninstalling elyxer, define htlatex
as an alternative HMTL converter in ToolsSettings.

 If you are using 2.0,

you will have the choice between all instlled HTML exporters by default

Why did you download from CTAN? To get a special version?

Debian has texlive within its package system. So the standard way
of installing texlive on Debian, is something like:

apt-get install texlive

If you want *all* of texlive, even the lesser used stuff:

apt-get install texlive-full

This command will both download and install texlive. Texlive will then
work, without any further action.

WRONG: you can ask the elyxer developer whether support for these
constructs, providing sample input (and preferabely expected output).

You might want to try whether htlatex supports the polynom package
with a "manual" conversion (export to LaTeX and call htlatex from the
command line) first. Or instead of uninstalling elyxer, define htlatex
as an alternative HMTL converter in Tools>Settings.

you will have the choice between all instlled HTML exporters by default
(without the need of manually defining them in Tools>Settings).

This is exacly the reason: captions that fit on one line are centered by
some layout styles. The KOMA-script documentation (scrguien.pdf) will
tell you how you can configure this via document options or code in the

Because in some languages " is an "active character" (similar to

Well, why then would TeX call it \textquotedbl ?

No. Unicode says

Character '"' (34, 0x22)
0022QUOTATION MARK
* neutral (vertical), used as opening or closing quotation mark
* preferred characters in English for paired quotation marks are
  201C & 201D

it is related but not the same as

x (modifier letter double prime - 02BA)
x (combining double acute accent - 030B)
x (combining double vertical line above - 030E)
x (double prime - 2033)
x (ditto mark - 3003)

and it's also *not*

2033DOUBLE PRIME

LyX de-activates the special use of the tilde (~) in Spanish in order to
keep it as no-break-space::

spanish spanish "Spanish" false iso8859-15 es_ES

Thanks, but the version that comes with Debian is 2007!, is so old that when I
am going to print, it asks to me that puts a clay tablet ;-)
In this old version, babel only came with sumerian and hittite ;-)
