problem while referencing in the text, appears as (?) in the pdf and dpi format
Hi, I can't solve this problem which is becoming quite frustrating. I'm using JabRef to reference in my thesis, using Natlib and agsm (have tried other formats too). I need to have the (author, year) format in the document. When I do it, looks fine in the LyX version, but when I convert it to PDF or PDI files, it appears as (? ), although the reference list is perfect. Can't find the reason, and would really appreciate any help. Marcela

I just noticed that if I view source, the outside pdf give this: % Preview source code for paragraph 75 \includepdf[pages=-]{/Users/alex/Dropbox/Honours/Documents/Thesis/Images/percent_pop_change_hob} whereas the inside image float pddf gives this: % Preview source code for paragraph 75 % \begin{figure} \includepdf[pages=-]{Images/percent_pop_change_hob} \caption{Population change in the Greater Hobart region between 2001 and 2006 (image source: \citep{statistics2006hobart})} \end{figure} Note the relative path in the second bit. Why would this cause a problem though? The relative path is not the problem. The pdfpages package (which provides \includepdf) is used when inserting external material. That package basically outputs directly into the PDF output file with some transformations. It is usually used to import many pages from other documents for appendices or similar tasks. It cannot be used in a float, since that would mean LaTeX would need to change the typesetting by itself to displace it where it ends up. If you want to put a PDF figure in a float, simply use the Insert:Graphics menu in the float as usual (like you would do for PNG or JPEG images) and choose your PDF file. You might need to make sure you have the right double quote. Typing . will get you a LEFT quote plus a period. So you have to type , then type again, to get a right quote, delete the first one, then type the period, and search for that. Same with the replacement. rh Aha! That was the trick. question about overriding Lyx default document class
If I export an OOo document using writer2latex.oxt, it outputs a tex file which has all the necessary tex/latex commands to compile directly. However, I'd like to then import that document into LyX. My issue is that I seem to need to create a layout that uses everthing between the \documentclass and \begindocument in the tex file? I've tried reading notes on the wiki and searching this list but I have not understood what I need to do. For instance, if I have a very simple document (just a line of text), writer2latex.oxt produces the following, but I can't just import this into LyX. If someone can point me at the correct tutorial on how to 'split out' this document so that it can be used with LyX, I'd be very grateful. Note: My actual document has \usepackage, \newcommand, etc but I'm assuming the process for something simple like the following would apply for a more complicated document as well.
If I simply remove the documentclass, I still get errors about \addtolength, and others. boxhandler is found as are the other LaTex classes and styles that are referenced which were added to my local texmf directory and texhash was run, at least LyX shows them under Tex Info. That package basically outputs directly into the PDF output file with some transformations. It is usually used to import many pages from other documents for appendices or similar tasks. It cannot be used in a float, since that would mean LaTeX would need to change the typesetting by itself to displace it where it ends up. If you want to put a PDF figure in a float, simply use the "Insert:Graphics" menu in the float as usual (like you would do for PNG or JPEG images) and choose your PDF file. Almost every time this comes up, the reason is the same: Unicode in the BibTeX file, usually in some author name that has been cut and pasted from the web. *BibTeX cannot handle Unicode.* Sometimes it will work, but only by sheer luck. Try opening the file in a text editor and then saving it in ISO-8859-1 format. Richard

I guess that is what happens when I try to send the simplest example I can put together. I'm not sure how to send a better example e.g. writer2latex's user-manual.odt exported using writer2latex's filter. It does not work if I simply import it into LyX.

I have generally found that things like writer2latex produce really ugly LaTeX, and that is likely to confuse tex2lyx. Not to mention that your document will be littered with ERT. My experience was mostly with wp2latex (for WordPerfect), and I ended up writing a sed script that went through and cleaned up the file in various ways. If I had it to do again, I'd probably do it in Perl or Python, but you get the idea. Richard

The first error is a misplaced \noalign in a table which seems to cascade into a lot of other errors. 2) the second concerns an in-house tex template that is used for internal reports. I can use Texworks, open the file, add text, equations, tables, and such without issues. I can also use WinEdt (on a PC) with the tex file and it works as well. If I simply remove the documentclass, I still get errors about \addtolength, and others. boxhandler is found as are the other LaTex classes and styles that are referenced which were added to my local texmf directory and texhash was run, at least LyX shows them under Tex Info. I'm trying to convert the template to work with LyX although it does show up with a lot of TeX commands embedded in it. (lots of red sections). Sincerely, Dave Hopkins

Because LyX adds \documentclass itself. To use this with LyX, you'll definitely need to disentangle some of this. The \usepackage stuff should really go in the preamble, BEFORE \documentclass is issued, and I'd think the \defs are more natural there, too. If I simply remove the documentclass, I still get errors about \addtolength, and others. I'm not so sure why you see this, but, again, disentangling is surely the key. I'm trying to convert the template to work with LyX although it does show up with a lot of TeX commands embedded in it. (lots of red sections). This can probably be cleaned up some, but it has to be done manually. You may be able to write new layout styles, or character styles, to replace some of this. Richard

turn off blinking cursor?
Is there any way to get a non-blinking cursor? I find it most distracting.
