interrupt background export / view?

2011-05-23 Thread Rainer M Krug
Hi

I was seting up a new converter, and it happened that during trying it out,
the background view / export just hung and I could not quit LyX - I had to
use

kill -s 9 lyx

to quit.

Is there any way to gracefully abort an export / view?

Thanks,

Rainer

logo on front slide of beamer presentation

2011-05-23 Thread Marit Elisabeth Klemetsen
Hi!

My name is Marit and I am working on my thesis presentation in a template
called beamer-conference-ornate-20min. I am trying to do include the logo
of Stockholm University on the front slide and the instructions I get from
the template are:

If you have a file called institution-logo-filename.xxx, where xxx is a
graphic format that can be processed by latex or pdflatex, resp., then you
can add a logo by uncommenting the following:

%\pgfdeclareimage[height=0.5cm]{institution-logo}{institution-logo-filename}

%\logo{\pgfuseimage{institution-logo}}

Do I need to install pgf? I hope I can avoid this. I have the logo in .pdf
and in .tif . Can LyX process this? I saved the logo in the same folder as
my lyx document. I removed the % signs guessing that I then am
uncommenting the code. I named the file institution-logo-filename just
to test it. But it didn't work.
Is there a code to include a logo in pdf format?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Marit

Re: spreadtab module

2011-05-23 Thread Liviu Andronic
On Sun, May 22, 2011 at 11:02 AM, Andrew Parsloe apars...@clear.net.nz wrote:
 A few weeks ago I wrote to the list about the missing element in the `LyX
 office suite', namely spreadsheet capabilities, and generated a strongly
 negative reaction. What my choice of words may have obscured was a
 suggestion that LyX support the Latex spreadtab package.

 This package enables the construction of tables in which the values in some
 cells depend on values in others, and mathematical expressions can be
 evaluated, as in a spreadsheet. Not only arithmetic operations but
 trigonometric, exponential and other functions are provided. When the
 document is compiled the calculations are done and the calculated values
 appear in the pdf output. But I've found building spreadtab tables of any
 complexity in a text editor difficult, which is why the idea of using LyX's
 table building machinery -- the toolbar and right-click context menu -- was
 so appealing.

 I've now managed to create a working module -- spreadtab.module, at the
 bottom of this email -- which makes spreadtab usable in LyX (in much the way
 biblatex is usable in LyX, although not as yet properly supported). It gives
 LyX a limited spreadsheet-like capability -- values are (re)calculated at
 every View Update and appear in the pdf or other output (but not in LyX).
 LyX's excellent table building machinery makes all the difference.

Very nice. Please consider adding this info the module itself to
[1]. In time, as the module stabilizes, you may create a bug to
request inclusion in the main LyX distribution.

Regards
Liviu

[1] http://wiki.lyx.org/Layouts/Modules

 The spreadtab module adds two environments to a document. Once one has built
 a table, you envelope it in one or other of these environments -- position
 the cursor and select the environment from the drop-down list, that's all --
 and, on clicking View or Update, the calculations are performed and a LyX
 table appears in the pdf output with the calculated values. Quite elaborate
 calculations are possible -- the spreadtab manual gives a good range of
 examples.

 The spreadtab package requires the xstring and fp packages. The latter is
 the one that does the actual calculating (to 18 places of decimals).

 There are some complications in using the module, arising mainly from the
 way LyX puts `protective clothing' on some of the characters it reads (as
 you can see in the View Source window). Because of this, symbols like *, ^,
 \, , , { and }, which are used in spreadtab, need to be entered in table
 cells in ERT. But the module is perfectly usable and provides a new area of
 functionality for LyX without adding a single byte to the LyX binary
 (although I hope that some LyX C++ developer might have his interest piqued
 and alter that).

 To use the module save it to your personal LyX layout folder. On Windows
 Vista this is C:\Users\your name\AppData\Roaming\LyX2.0\layouts. LyX will
 need to be reconfigured to recognise the existence of the module. I've also
 attached to this email a 7-zipped LyX document SpreadtabWithLyX.7z with
 instructions for using the module and examples, although reading or at least
 skimming the initial sections of the spreadtab manual is advisable. (The
 manual is not large -- just over 20 pages.) SpreadtabWithLyX also describes
 a timesheet which makes use of the new capability -- you enter date, start
 time and finish time from which spreadtab calculates the daily hours worked,
 total hours worked, and how much you've earned at a given pay rate. There
 are also instructions for using the calculator, which is a spin-off of the
 new capability.

 Technical note: In the module there is a big \renewcommand section of code
 modified from spreadtab.sty. This is because LyX's tables use
 \tabularnewline to end a row whereas spreadtab uses \\. I found that simply
 substituting \tabularnewline for the instances of \\ in the spreadtab macro
 solved the problem. Christian Tellechea, who is the author of spreadtab, has
 sent me a reworking of the macro so that the user can choose which command
 ends a table row. That would certainly simplify the module. However, it is
 also clear that in the inequality MSWord LyX (La)TeX he places himself
 well to the right, and didn't seem keen to make this option available in his
 projected update of spreadtab (perhaps suspecting it would only aid the
 LyXian heresy). In the meantime the big chunk of code is necessary.

 Non-technical note: Oliver Sacks in his book `Awakenings' (1973) recounts
 the stories of victims of the 1920s encephalitis lethargica epidemic who
 were `woken' from their catatonic state by a certain drug. Writing `sL' for
 `spreadtab LyX' and  'do' (for 'do') suggested \sLdop@ for a macro that woke
 numbers waiting (in their catatonic state) to be calculated.

how to use eps graphic for dvi, pdf graphic for pdf output?

2011-05-23 Thread Julien Rioux

Dear list,

I have two versions of a graphic, one is an eps the other a pdf. How can
I instruct LyX to use the eps version when compiling to DVI and the pdf
version when compiling to PDF (pdflatex)?

The usual trick in latex to omit file extension does not work here. LyX
displays No file found!, DVI output shows a default 200px by 100px box
instead of the graphic, and PDF (pdflatex) output issues an error
message Cannot determine size of graphic

NB I know that LyX calls eps-pdf convertion tools.
NB I explicitly do not want that to happen.

Thanks,

LyX outputs the graphic insets to LaTeX without extension, so it should work
if you just insert either of the two formats, while both are stored in the
same directory and with the same file name.

Hi Jürgen,

Thanks, however when I use the pdf version in LyX, with the file name
mangling that happens in the temp dir, and LyX issuing a pdf-eps
convertion, the resulting eps used in the DVI is not the one I provide.

Right now I use

\usepackage{graphicx}

in the preamble and

\includegraphics{filename}

in ERT and this is a satisfactory workaround.

 Whoops, hang on, I had been doing a bit of experimenting with PDF output
 and had deleted entry for a DVI viewer in Preferences - Output -
 General. I've put the command for Yap back in and now, well, forward
 search is now working. I am certain I had selected the built-in Yap
 command when it was first failing, as I checked and double-checked
 against the instructions, but perhaps I just had some sort of blind spot
 (or, as I shall choose to believe, I inadvertently fixed something :-) .

OK, things still aren't quite right but I think I've uncovered what
might be the problem. As I note above, when I first set things up, I
was certain I had selected the supplied Yap command for Preferences -
Output - General. However, since I was only using Yap, I left the
field for the PDF viewer blank. This led to the Couldn't proceed
message when I invoked Forward Search. I have since added the supplied
viewer command for SumatraPDF, even though I am only previewing with
DVI, and now when I invoke Forward Search, I see the following error
message:

13:00:31.093: The process failed to start. Either the invoked program is
missing, or you may have insufficient permissions to invoke the
program...\..\..\lyx-2.0.0\src\support\Systemcall.cpp(217): Systemcall:

did not start!
..\..\..\lyx-2.0.0\src\support\Systemcall.cpp(218): error The process
failed to start. Either the invoked program is missing, or you may have
insufficient permissions

That is, LyX is calling the appropriate forward search command for a PDF
preview document, not DVI. According to the documentation, this should
not be happening:

  Forward search works both with DVI and PDF output. LyX simply
  checks which preview format you have used before (i.e., which
  format is already there in the temporary directory) and chooses
  the appropriate configuration for the respective format.

I have checked the Temp directory LyX is using for my current document
and there are no signs that I am using PDF there; there are only the
output files you expect from using the latex command to generate a DVI
file. I'm not sure why forward search started working properly for me
last night -- something happened to enable LyX correctly to realize that
I was doing a DVI preview -- but pretty clearly its invoking the forward
search command appropriate for PDF instead of DVI is the reason why it
wasn't working for me before and is not working again now. (The problem
arises whether or not I use the synctex option.)

Suggestions, as always, much appreciated.

Another solution also using fancy page headers in the document settings
but plain tex otherwise. Put this in the preamble.

\def\hlinefill{\leavevmode\cleaders\hbox{\rule[0.6ex]{1em}{0.4pt}}\hfill}
\fancyfoot{\hlinefill~~~\thepage~~~\hlinefill}

In the above:
- 0.6ex is the height of the line (looks kind of centered)
- 1em is the width of a line segment which gets repeated to fill space
- 0.4pt is the thickness of the line (this particular choice is a
default value elsewhere in tex)

By the way, using fancy headers will add default headers, if you don't
want them you get rid of them with

\fancyhead{}

I do not know for sure, but I would guess that this template is meant to
use the autoref features of hyperref. There is no direct support for

Lilypond version 2.12.3-7ubuntu1 and lyx 2.0.0rc3~1.

Hi,

There are two ways to get your score into your article. The first is to
have an external .ly file which you include as graphic in your document.
This works fine if your score is shorter than a page.

The second is to use the new lilypond module, which will work with
lilypond-book to produce your document. This also supports long scores.
To use the lilypond module that comes with LyX, Lilypond 2.12 is not
recent enough... we require 2.13 which is the development version. I
think that there are no ubuntu packages for it, but you can download the
source code and compile lilypond 2.13 following their instructions (if
you are familiar with open source, it's really not too hard to do).

After installing lilypond 2.13, you will need to reconfigure LyX.

If you can't or won't install lilypond 2.13, I can tell you how to
configure LyX to use 2.12, but I expect that we get problems doing so. I
would highly recommend you try either the approach with the external .ly
file or to get 2.13 to get the lilypond module working.

This extract:
% increase link area for cross-references and autoname them
\AtBeginDocument{\renewcommand{\ref}[1]{\mbox{\autoref{#1

from your preamble is an old trick to change the normal reference
format, which appear as reference in the cross-ref dialog of LyX,
into named references. Named references are now supported by LyX so it
is no longer necessary to use this trick. Simply use the Formatted
reference format in the cross-ref dialog. We should probably remove
this trick from places where it is used in LyX's docs and templates.

Named references are provided by one of these latex packages: either
prettyref or refstyle. This is configurable in the Doucment class options.

Using prettyref you can write in your preamble:
\newrefformat{fig}{Fig.~\ref{#1}}

If you are using hyperref and you want the Fig. part to be clickable
also, instead use this:

\newrefformat{fig}{\hyperref[#1]{Fig.~\ref*{#1}}}

I do not know at the moment how to customize refstyle, but it should be
possible to do so in a similar way.

biblatex-chicago

2011-05-23 Thread Louis Turk
Hi everyone,

I'm using Lyx 2.0. I have an English book which uses a few Hebrew and
Greek words. I need to use biblatex-chicago footnote citations with this
book.

I've installed:

biblatex
biblatex-biber
biblatex-chicago

Document class: book (Memoir)

Modules: Biblatex-citation-styles

Language: English USA
Encoding: Unicode (XeTex)(utf8)
Language package: Always Babel

Bibliography:
Citation style: Natbib Author-year
Bibliograpy generation:
Processor: biber
Options: none

Output: Default output format: PDF (XeTex)

Preamble:

\usepackage[hebrew,greek,english]{babel}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\usepackage{csquotes}
\usepackage[backend=biber]{biblatex}
\chapterstyle{bianchi}
\setlength{\hoffset}{0.5 in}
\setlength{\voffset}{0.3 in}
\RequirePackage{microtype}
\renewenvironment{quote}%

\itemindent\listparindent
\rightmargin   \z@
\parsep\z@ \@plus\p@}%
\item[]}%
   {\endlist}

I can insert citations, but when I try to make the PDF file I get the
following error messages:

Package biblatex Error: ' \bibliographystyle' invalid.
LaTex error: Can be used only in preamble.

 \bibliographystyle{chicago-fa}

Use the package option 'style' instead.
I'm ignoring the command.

What am I doing wrong here, and how can I fix it?

logo on front slide of beamer presentation

2011-05-23 Thread Marit Elisabeth Klemetsen
Hi!

My name is Marit and I am working on my thesis presentation in a template
called beamer-conference-ornate-20min. I am trying to do include the logo
of Stockholm University on the front slide and the instructions I get from
the template are:

If you have a file called institution-logo-filename.xxx, where xxx is a
graphic format that can be processed by latex or pdflatex, resp., then you
can add a logo by uncommenting the following:

%\pgfdeclareimage[height=0.5cm]{institution-logo}{institution-logo-filename}

%\logo{\pgfuseimage{institution-logo}}

Do I need to install pgf? I hope I can avoid this. I have the logo in .pdf
and in .tif . Can LyX process this? I saved the logo in the same folder as
my lyx document. I removed the % signs guessing that I then am
uncommenting the code. I named the file institution-logo-filename just
to test it. But it didn't work.
Is there a code to include a logo in pdf format?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Marit

Re: spreadtab module

2011-05-23 Thread Liviu Andronic

\usepackage{graphicx}

in the preamble and

\includegraphics{filename}

in ERT and this is a satisfactory workaround.

\def\hlinefill{\leavevmode\cleaders\hbox{\rule[0.6ex]{1em}{0.4pt}}\hfill}
\fancyfoot{\hlinefill~~~\thepage~~~\hlinefill}

\fancyhead{}

I do not know for sure, but I would guess that this template is meant to
use the autoref features of hyperref. There is no direct support for
this in LyX. That is, you can do things like:

\autoref{fig:mylabel}
in ERT, but normal LyX cross-references will not be affected by the
command you mention.

Hello,
i have the message the module lilypond requires a package that is not available
in your LaTeX installation (mais en français).
I'm under Ubuntu.
how to fix this issue? The path is to lilypond-book.bin?
It is very urgent for me... i absolutely need to insert score in an article.
Lilypond version 2.12.3-7ubuntu1 and lyx 2.0.0rc3~1.

Thanks

\newrefformat{fig}{Fig.~\ref{#1}}

If you are using hyperref and you want the Fig. part to be clickable
also, instead use this:

\newrefformat{fig}{\hyperref[#1]{Fig.~\ref*{#1}}}

I do not know at the moment how to customize refstyle, but it should be
possible to do so in a similar way.

logo on front slide of beamer presentation

2011-05-23 Thread Marit Elisabeth Klemetsen
Hi!

My name is Marit and I am working on my thesis presentation in a template
called "beamer-conference-ornate-20min". I am trying to do include the logo
of Stockholm University on the front slide and the instructions I get from
the template are:

"If you have a file called "institution-logo-filename.xxx", where xxx is a
graphic format that can be processed by latex or pdflatex, resp., then you
can add a logo by uncommenting the following:

%\pgfdeclareimage[height=0.5cm]{institution-logo}{institution-logo-filename}

%\logo{\pgfuseimage{institution-logo}}
"
Do I need to install pgf? I hope I can avoid this. I have the logo in .pdf
and in .tif . Can LyX process this? I saved the logo in the same folder as
my lyx document. I removed the % signs guessing that I then am
"uncommenting" the code. I named the file "institution-logo-filename" just
to test it. But it didn't work.
Is there a code to include a logo in pdf format?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Marit

how to use eps graphic for dvi, pdf graphic for pdf output?

Dear list,

I have two versions of a graphic, one is an eps the other a pdf. How can
I instruct LyX to use the eps version when compiling to DVI and the pdf
version when compiling to PDF (pdflatex)?

The usual trick in latex to omit file extension does not work here. LyX
displays "No file found!", DVI output shows a default 200px by 100px box
instead of the graphic, and PDF (pdflatex) output issues an error
message "Cannot determine size of graphic...".

LyX outputs the graphic insets to LaTeX without extension, so it should work
if you just insert either of the two formats, while both are stored in the
same directory and with the same file name.

Hi Jürgen,

Thanks, however when I use the pdf version in LyX, with the file name
mangling that happens in the temp dir, and LyX issuing a pdf->eps
convertion, the resulting eps used in the DVI is not the one I provide.

Right now I use

\usepackage{graphicx}

in the preamble and

\includegraphics{filename}

in ERT and this is a satisfactory workaround.

OK, things still aren't quite right but I think I've uncovered what
might be the problem. As I note above, when I first set things up, I
was certain I had selected the supplied Yap command for Preferences ->
Output -> General. However, since I was only using Yap, I left the
field for the PDF viewer blank. This led to the "Couldn't proceed"
message when I invoked Forward Search.

A horizontal line in the footer which is interrupted by the page number
in the center. Is this possible in lyx/latex? How?

If you have the mboxfill package installed, you can change the page style to
"fancy" (Document> Settings...> Page Layout> Headings style) and add the
following to the preamble of your document:

\usepackage{mboxfill}
\cfoot{\mboxfill[2\width][c]{-}\thepage\mboxfill[2\width][c]{-}}

Paul

Another solution also using fancy page headers in the document settings
but plain tex otherwise. Put this in the preamble.

\def\hlinefill{\leavevmode\cleaders\hbox{\rule[0.6ex]{1em}{0.4pt}}\hfill}
\fancyfoot{\hlinefill~~~\thepage~~~\hlinefill}

\fancyhead{}

LyX performs a forward search for the last generated format, so it means
that you generated a pdf after the dvi, even if you quitted the pdf viewer
and are now previewing the dvi.

Automatic Reference Naming is not working in Lyx2.0 with the thesis template

2011-05-23 Thread Ruida Yun
Hi all,

I'm writing my dissertation using Lyx2.0 with the built-in thesis template.

The preamble in thesis template define
\renewcommand{\figureautorefname}{Fig.\negthinspace} to change the
default Figure to Fig. while referencing the figure. However, I found
out the it doesn't work for my me. Please find the attached file to
see the problem.

 I've googled this problem for a while but couldn't find a solution.
Any suggestion would be more than welcome.

Thanks a lot!

font style in the TOC

2011-05-23 Thread Hendrik Wulf

Dear Reader,

I use lyx 1.6.10 on a Mac 10.4 (by the way lyx 2.0 does not start,
although I followed the instructions).
IN my recent document I use a document class called
"ociamthesis-lyx.cls" offered by the Oxford University. The thesis
template of that class works fine, however in my own document the output
of the Table of Contents in presented in typewriter style, which
contrast the times style of all other parts.

How can I chance the font style in the table of contents?

Thank you very much for your help!
Hendrik

Hello,
i have the message "the module lilypond requires a package that is not available
in your LaTeX installation" (mais en français).
I'm under Ubuntu.
how to fix this issue? The path is to lilypond-book.bin?
It is very urgent for me... i absolutely need to insert score in an article.
Lilypond version 2.12.3-7ubuntu1 and lyx 2.0.0rc3~1.

Thanks

I do not know for sure, but I would guess that this template is meant to
use the autoref features of hyperref. There is no direct support for
this in LyX. That is, you can do things like:

\autoref{fig:mylabel}
in ERT, but normal LyX cross-references will not be affected by the
command you mention.

Without seeing the class itself and the layout file, and preferably a
simple example file, there is no way we can answer this. So

Cheers,
Julien

This extract:
% increase link area for cross-references and autoname them
\AtBeginDocument{\renewcommand{\ref}[1]{\mbox{\autoref{#1

from your preamble is an old trick to change the normal reference
format, which appear as "" in the cross-ref dialog of LyX,
into named references. Named references are now supported by LyX so it
is no longer necessary to use this trick. Simply use the "Formatted
reference" format in the cross-ref dialog. We should probably remove
this trick from places where it is used in LyX's docs and templates.

Named references are provided by one of these latex packages: either
prettyref or refstyle. This is configurable in the "Doucment class" options.

Using prettyref you can write in your preamble:
\newrefformat{fig}{Fig.~\ref{#1}}

If you are using hyperref and you want the "Fig." part to be clickable
also, instead use this:

\newrefformat{fig}{\hyperref[#1]{Fig.~\ref*{#1}}}

I do not know at the moment how to customize refstyle, but it should be
possible to do so in a similar way.

biblatex-chicago

2011-05-23 Thread Louis Turk
Hi everyone,

I'm using Lyx 2.0. I have an English book which uses a few Hebrew and
Greek words. I need to use biblatex-chicago footnote citations with this
book.

I've installed:

biblatex
biblatex-biber
biblatex-chicago

Document class: book (Memoir)

Modules: Biblatex-citation-styles

Language: English USA
Encoding: Unicode (XeTex)(utf8)
Language package: Always Babel

Bibliography:
Citation style: Natbib Author-year
Bibliograpy generation:
Processor: biber
Options: none

Output: Default output format: PDF (XeTex)

Preamble:

\usepackage[hebrew,greek,english]{babel}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\usepackage{csquotes}
\usepackage[backend=biber]{biblatex}
\chapterstyle{bianchi}
\setlength{\hoffset}{0.5 in}
\setlength{\voffset}{0.3 in}
\RequirePackage{microtype}
\renewenvironment{quote}%
   {\sffamily\small\list{}{\rightmargin\z@}%
\item[]}%
   {\endlist}
\renewenvironment{quotation}%
   {\sffamily\small\list{}{\listparindent 1.5em%
\itemindent\listparindent
\rightmargin   \z@
\parsep\z@ \@plus\p@}%
\item[]}%
   {\endlist}

I can insert citations, but when I try to make the PDF file I get the
following error messages:

Package biblatex Error: ' \bibliographystyle' invalid.
LaTex error: Can be used only in preamble.

 \bibliographystyle{chicago-fa}

Use the package option 'style' instead.
I'm ignoring the command.

What am I doing wrong here, and how can I fix it?

Lou

Thesis margins 1.5 left and 1 elsewhere

2011-05-23 Thread Eisa Ayed
My school requires that I've 1.5 inch margin on the left side and 1 inch in all
other margins.
I checked  Document->Settings->Page Margins.

There is entry listed for left margin.
How can I possibly do that in Lyx version 1.6.8 ?

2011-05-23 Thread Louis Turk
Hi fellow Lyxers,

Am I correct in thinking that JabRef does not support biblatex?

The only program I've found that supports entering biblatex citations
into .bib files is Synaptic. Are there others?

Is there an emacs mode for doing this?
