selected the "Use Multi-page Table" option, and even clicked on a cell
half-way down the table and checked the option "Page break on current row",
but Lyx presents an error code when I go to view it as a pdf, and when
I want to share version controlled files with a colleague. He has sent
me a x.lyx,v file. How do I import it? If I rename the file to x.lyx, I
am told that it is not a readable file. This is true also if I change
the properties (read/write for group)

You can used multiple column from document>setting>modules>multiple columns.
Then from insert>custom inserts>multiple columns.
Then in multiple columns box add itemize.
this give you itemize in to columns, and you can put its in 3 or 4 or .. by
used small code.
