Paul,

The problem is that standard LaTeX page definitions do not allow the
precise layout design which is one of memoir's purposes, so the package
does things differently. The default values are ones which are used
very frequently, so new users of memoir often don't notice the
difference. But when you want to move away from the default you have
problems. That's how I found out that memoir does things differently.

Why a processing error under Windows but not Linux?

2020-03-05 Thread Kenward Vaughan

Hi all,

I have my students using LyX for their organic chemistry lab reports.  I
use a pretty standard installation at home under Debian, while most of
them use Windows or Mac.  One student in particular tried using an
example file I posted for them, added material to it, then ran into

I had him send me both the original file and his file.  Both properly
process for me.  No one else has reported issues (yet) like this.  If he
generates a trivial file with a few words in it, no problem is encountered.

The wording of the error message is the following:

\chemgreek_drop_symbols:

of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have

misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct

spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,

and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

Is it possible that his installation of TexLive is not complete? Or is
there something else I'm oblivious to which would explain this?

What else is important for people to be able to problem-solve this?  I'm
certainly not a guru at this sort of thing.

Re: single quotes in xhtml output

2020-03-05 Thread Cuyahoga Falls
Thank you for your reply. It never occurred to me that LyX would have
special key-strokes to obtain typographic inner quotes when it
automatically inserts typographic outer quotes without a special key-stroke.

Now that I know how it works, I can get the desired result.

Which keys or key-combinations do you use to insert the quote signs?

By default, the »"«-key, inserts an "outer" „smart-quote inset“ which is
converted to a typographical quote according to the document language's
conventions (configurable in Document>Settings>Language).

The default binding for "inner" „smart quotes“ is Alt-". Alternatively, you
can use the Menu Insert>Special Character>Inner Quotation Mark.

The ` and ' keys, in contrast default to inserting ASCII GRAVE ACCENT

typographical curly single quotes but most fonts used in web browsers show
them in the "neutral" shape.

Also, when exporting to html, all quotes are properly converted,

Probabely, the external converter implements a "smart quotes" feature.

but I prefer the single file output of xhtml.

I suppose with "xhtml" you mean the native "LyXHTML" export route?

There is no plan to add such a smartquotes feature to the LyXHTML export,
rather users should input typographical quotes either as literal characters
or "quote insets".

You may consider binding the '-key or the `-key to "quote-insert inner"
(with Tools>Preferences>Editing>Shortcuts),
use Alt-" or your systems keybindings for the literal curly quote Unicode
characters.

Les

I was struck by your observation that the memoir class ignores the LyX page
sizes. I have been using memoir as my base for most LyX drafting and have
happily used either the LyX defaults or minor variations specified in the LyX
settings eg on margins without any apparent need to put anything in the
preamble. Is this just because I have simple needs (a4, standard margins)? If I
needed a greater range of sizes would I then find that the LyX settings were
ignored?

I have been using versions of LyX up to the most recent on Mac OSX, currently
Catalina.

Agree with you about the manual!

Paul

Rich,

Thanks for the information. I might have a use for pdfjam sometimes.

The document I gave the example for is a memoir currently in the
process of publication. When the "Books Manager" with the publisher
talked about scraping my text from my 340 page PDF file, in order to
reformat to follow their style, it set off all kinds of alarm bells
when I thought of what they would do with over a hundred figures, a six
page glossary, an 18 page index, and hundreds of cross-references. So I
offered to prepare a final PDF to their detailed specifications. The
trickiest part was getting the page headings exactly as they wanted
them. This would not be possible with KOMA-script (which I have used
extensively, and still do use a lot).

I hope by doing it this way, the publisher will not only get it
"right", but will get it on sale faster, and at lower cost. If
the publisher's costs are lower, they can sell at a lower price, which
will increase the number of sales and (hopefully) increase my royalties.

Les,

I use the KOMA-Script classes, not memoir, but I offer information related
to PDF page size that applies to existing PDF files, not generated ones in
LyX.

There's a tool called pdfjam that allows a pdf document to be resized to
different paper sizes (among other tweaks.) I learned of it when printed web
pages were legal rather than letter size. Using pdfjam I reformatted the
documents to fit letter paper.

Off topic but perhaps useful.

Yes. The commands I listed set up the whole of the page layout.

I really like memoir, but learning it has taken me years, and I still
have to look things up in the manual (over 500 pages with a Fog Index
around 13).
