On a mac you got to press “alt + s” to write it but I am not sure if he want’s

citation problem with publication from same author, same year

2008-08-31 Thread Benjamin Hentschel

Hello everyone,

this is my first post here and I hope it's ok to ask. I already did an
intensive search on the internet regarding my question but I somehow
can't find any pages that are related.

I have a problem with the implementation of a BibTex library in Lyx/
Latex. The problem occurs when I name publications from the same
author and the same year with a,b,c etc.

So I want it to occur like this in the Document: (Tanaka 2001b) but
after having the file compiled to a pdf the outcome is somewhat like
this (Tanaka 001b). For some reason the citation only refers to the
last four letters in the field "year" so the first number is not
written in the pdf.

I use natbib with apa-style and set "\bibpunct[: ]{(}{)}{}{}{ }{}" to
make the citation more customlike

Does anyone experienced a similar problem? If yes, can you could give
me some advice?

Thanks, ben

bibtex/bibdesk - small letters in articles, capitol letters in book - problem

2008-10-28 Thread Benjamin Hentschel

Hello,

I have a problem concerning the implementation of my bibdesk database
(Im working with a mac, bibdesk 1.3.18 and lyx 1.5.5).

I have a lot of entries in my database and the implementation into lyx
works perfect with one minor point that concerns me. When I declare an
entry in BibDesk as an article, the output in the actual lyx-file,
e.g. pdf-file, changes all words into small letters. For instance the
title of an entry which I entered as
"Shukko (employee transfers) and tacit knowledge exchange in Japanese
supply networks: the electronics industry case" appears as

"Shukko (employee transfers) and tacit
knowledge exchange in japanese supply networks: the electronics
industry case."

Needless to say that I want it to be "Japanese supply networks"
instead of "japanese supply networks". The same happens with names,
which should definitely be written with a capitol letter at the
beginning.

I also recognized that when I declare it as a book in Bibdesk/Bibtex,
every word starts with a capitol letter.

My question now is, can I manipulate the output somehow so that it
appears the way it should?

Thanks in advance,

ben

fancy table and figure layouts

2008-10-28 Thread Benjamin Hentschel

is there some way to declare the layout of all tables and figures to

If yes, what kind of package could achieve this? I already did some
research but couldn't find an example on the internet.

problem with beamer theme

2009-10-21 Thread Benjamin Deschamps

I am trying to use the "Torino" beamer theme available here:
http://marcobari.altervista.org/av/av.php?f=beamer-torino-0.1.tar.gz

Lyx 1.6.4.1, Mac OS 10.6.1 (Snow Leopard), MacTex 2008 (from tug.org)

I have put the .sty files in what appear to be the correct
directories, and they show up when I go to Tools > Tex Information >
Latex styles, in the directories:

/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-dist/tex/latex/beamer/themes/outer/
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-dist/tex/latex/beamer/themes/inner/
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-dist/tex/latex/beamer/themes/color/
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-dist/tex/latex/beamer/themes/theme/

When I add \usetheme{Torino} to the latex preamble, and try to
generate a pdf, I get this error:

\usetheme{Torino}
^^M
***(cannot \read from terminal in nonstop modes)

With any other of the default themes, it works fine. Any ideas?

Cannot convert latex code to a lyx document.

2010-04-13 Thread Benjamin Kay
I've tried my home windows PC (1.6.5) and my office linux pc (1.6.0) with
the same results I cannot import Latex code into Lyx using tex2lyx or using
File-Import-Latex (plain). Both give me problems. I've tried known working
latex code on the Internet but that doesn't work either, so I don't think I
have a bad input on my end.

Within Lyx, the version shows up as 1.6.0 while from synaptic package
manager the installation is package 1.6.4-1ubuntu1. The version information
on windows says 1.6.5

The error message from lyx is:
"An error occurred whilst running tex2lyx -f
'Latex_Output_for_Housing_Class_1.tex'

The error from the command line (tex2lyx -f
Latex_Output_for_Housing_Class_1.tex tmp.lyx ) is more elaborate but no more
helpful to me:

'import site' failed; use -v for traceback

Attached are the two tex files I used as inputs.

Any advice on how to fix this problem or work around it? Thanks for the

*I thought it may be a path or network drive problem in windows. When I run

*Which generates a file I can open with lyx, which is good. I had been
running it from a network drive (using expandrive) and having trouble. I was
also able to confirm it worked from local "My Documents". It also worked in
lyx. I guess problem solved (or at least worked around) for windows.* *When
I run the command directly on the tex2lyx on the network drive file it also
works:*
C:\Program Files\LyX16\bin>tex2lyx -f "Z:\Documents\Macro\Predicting housing
prices with rates and risk\Latex_Output_for_Housing_Class_1.tex"
Creating file Z:/Documents/Macro/Predicting housing prices with rates and
risk/Latex_Output_for_Housing_Class_1.lyx

*Then I thought it might be the spaces in the directory name in the path to
the latex source file. when I renamed the directory to
Predicting_housing_prices_with_rates_and_risk I got the same error, so I
think it is something else. *

*
So, to summarize. I can get tex2lyx to work and lyx to call it from windows
when working on a local drive but not a network drive. I cannot get tex2lyx
(or call it from lyx) from my linux machine (local only tried) . I have
verified that I have python installed, at leas superficially works, and also
added the PYTHONPATH shell parameter. *

appendices and numbering

Hi everyone,

I am finishing my thesis, have been using Lyx all along, so far so good. I hope
someone can help me out with two issues.

1) How can I insert appendices at the end of my document? I would also like
them listed in the TOC.

2) I have external PDF files embedded in the appendices. The are sized
according to the available text space (6.5 by 9 inches), so the header space is
not covered. How can I continue the page numbering and headers on theses pages?

Thanks in advance,

bibdesk reference exportation

2008-11-15 Thread Benjamin Hentschel

Hello again,

I know that there is the possibility tho export one's bibliographic
references and I already did this several times. However, by exporting
the whole library into let's say a html-file, all the references are
shown with the latest-inserted on top and the rest descending
according to the date I typed them in.

Does anybody knows a way to export the references in alphabetical
order? A close look at the preferences of the program yielded no
answer for me. :/

I use Bibdesk (Bibtex for mac) 1.3.18.

thanks a lot!

Nice LYX report template

Hi

I am working with LYX for the first time and am looking for a very nice
looking LYX report template for my assignments af the Engineering college of
Copenhagen. It is not a thesis template i am looking for but rather
something that would give room for the following content:

  Synopsis
1 Introduction
2 Requirement specification
3 Design
4 Theory
5 Analysis
6 Simulations
7 Test
8 Conclusion
9 Appendix

I have been looking for this template myself but without result. I tried to
search for: "technical report lyx template" etc.

I am studying to Electronics engineering and am looking forward to produce
better looking reports. Often i am using a lot of figures and graphs.

I would be very greatfull for a link or an attachment of such an template.

Thank you.

BibTeX citations hanging lyx

1999-06-28 Thread Benjamin Korvemaker

I'm trying to use bibtex citations in lyx -- and i've done it
successfully in the past. But i've run into a few things...

I thought lyx was supposed to automatically list the citations in the
bibtex db i've got at the bottom of the file, but it doesn't do that.
No biggy, i lived without that feature, although I swear it worked
once for me.

The one that's bothering me is that when I go to insert an entry, it
hangs. the screen updates, but nothing happens, and i get no menu
responses, etc.

Other bibtex db's don't do this. And the hanging doesn't happen to all
my lyx's (the Linux and IRIX ones do, the Solaris one doesn't). And if
I re-compile, and run lyx out of the src dir, it doesn't hang, but
when I install it and use the installed one, it hangs.

Anyone else ever see this?

Ugh. Well, I've sort of solved my problem. Is this a known bug? Is
there a patch I should apply?

Putting (or symlinking at least) the bib file into the current directory:
(a) allows it to be found and parsed for entries
(b) prevents lyx from hanging

Is LyX supposed to search through the directories specified by BIBINPUTS?
Or is that a flawed assumption on my part?

It *was*

.::/home/benjamin/bib

It's *now*

.:/usr/lib/texmf/texmf/bibtex/bib//::/home/benjamin/bib//

after additional experimentation and hunting through the source, it would
seem lyx doesn't parse the "::" at all, and doesn't seem to pass it off
to kpathsea... hard-coding the path into BIBINPUTS works, but is annoying,
because things are installed differently on the Solaris and Linux boxes..

And I've just discovered (i think), the glitch..
named "um99.bib", lyx hangs..
named "um.bib", lyx parses it ok...
But looking at the code, I can't see why this could possibly matter...

Can anyone duplicate this?

Not sure if you got things working yet, but what I've been doing is:

1) make sure I've got a JPEG or PNG for each PS or EPS file imported.
One's better for pictures, and the other for line art. Just make
sure when you convert the eps to make it a bit bigger than you'll
need, so that pdflatex is scaling pixels down and not up.
2) when inserting pictures, trim off the .ps or .eps -- latex still
finds them, and pdflatex finds the .jpg or .png, I think. Worst case,
you have to go through the latex source and change the filenames
   by hand.
3) export to latex
4) run pdflatex on the source -- bibtex too, if you use it.

Oh, and always make sure your font is Times or something that acroread
likes. But everyone's pointed that out.

I don't know why you're having that problem, i'm running fine w/ rh
6.1, but here's a few things:

1. check that you have the right xforms library.

2. if that doesn't help, tweak your LD_LIBRARY_PATH to find the libc5
libs. Things like wordperfect blow up if the LD_LIBRARY_PATH isn't
exactly /usr/i486-linux/libc5:/usr/X11R6 .. so your millage may vary.

Hope this triggers someone's memory and they can explain things
further.

If I understand what you're asking, you need to use the latex command
\marginparwidth in the LaTeX Preamble (under the Layout Menu).

eg.

\marginparwidth 2in

There's probably 3 other ways to do it, but this is the one I was
reduced to recently. If you've got the LaTeX user's guide and reference
by Lamport, figure C.3 (Page style parameters) on page 182 in the second
edition gives you a list of all the latex commands to tweak the margins.

cross-reference limit?

It looks like I'm cross-reference junkie and being punished for it.

I added a couple more labels, and now part-way into the "Refs->Insert
Pretty Ref->" pulldown menu, it doesn't let me insert more references.
Is it just my installation, or is this a known limitation? (i checked
quickly didn't see it mentioned in the docs for lyx-1.1.5fix1) Fortunately,
I can still use the "Insert->Cross Reference..." pop-up, so I'm not stuck.

Einfach:

% Sans als Standard
\renewcommand\familydefault{\sfdefault}

Im LaTeX Vorspann einfügen, das wars. Und das funktioniert mit so ziemlich
jeder Dokument Klasse.

citation problem with publication from same author, same year

For some reason the citation only refers to the
last four letters in the field year so the first number is not
written in the pdf.

I use natbib with apa-style and set \bibpunct[: ]{(}{)}{}{}{ }{} to
make the citation more customlike

For instance the
title of an entry which I entered as
Shukko (employee transfers) and tacit knowledge exchange in Japanese
supply networks: the electronics industry case appears as

Shukko (employee transfers) and tacit
knowledge exchange in japanese supply networks: the electronics
industry case.

Needless to say that I want it to be Japanese supply networks
instead of japanese supply networks. The same happens with names,
which should definitely be written with a capitol letter at the
beginning.

I also recognized that when I declare it as a book in Bibdesk/Bibtex,
every word starts with a capitol letter.

My question now is, can I manipulate the output somehow so that it
appears the way it should?

Thanks in advance,

ben

is there some way to declare the layout of all tables and figures to

If yes, what kind of package could achieve this? I already did some
research but couldn't find an example on the internet.

I've tried my home windows PC (1.6.5) and my office linux pc (1.6.0) with

File-Import-Latex (plain). Both give me problems. I've tried known working
latex code on the Internet but that doesn't work either, so I don't think I
have a bad input on my end.

Within Lyx, the version shows up as 1.6.0 while from synaptic package

on windows says 1.6.5

The error message from lyx is:

I run the command directly on the tex2lyx on the network drive file it also
works:*

Creating file Z:/Documents/Macro/Predicting housing prices with rates and

the latex source file. when I renamed the directory to

think it is something else. *

*
So, to summarize. I can get tex2lyx to work and lyx to call it from windows
when working on a local drive but not a network drive. I cannot get tex2lyx

If you are using Insert:File:External Material and pdf pages, you are
already using the pages={} in the LyX/LaTeX options tab. If you want to
have the pages/header displayed, add the following to the command to the
LyX/LaTeX options tab (in LaTeX format):

 pages={WHATEVER YOU ALREADY

bibdesk reference exportation

2008-11-15 Thread Benjamin Hentschel

Hello again,

I know that there is the possibility tho export one's bibliographic
references and I already did this several times. However, by exporting
the whole library into let's say a html-file, all the references are
shown with the latest-inserted on top and the rest descending
according to the date I typed them in.

Does anybody knows a way to export the references in alphabetical
order? A close look at the preferences of the program yielded no
answer for me. :/

I use Bibdesk (Bibtex for mac) 1.3.18.

thanks a lot!

Nice LYX report template

2009-03-24 Thread Benjamin K
Hi

I am working with LYX for the first time and am looking for a very nice
looking LYX report template for my assignments af the Engineering college of
Copenhagen. It is not a thesis template i am looking for but rather
something that would give room for the following content:

  Synopsis
1 Introduction
2 Requirement specification
3 Design
4 Theory
5 Analysis
6 Simulations
7 Test
8 Conclusion
9 Appendix

I have been looking for this template myself but without result. I tried to
search for: technical report lyx template etc.

I am studying to Electronics engineering and am looking forward to produce
better looking reports. Often i am using a lot of figures and graphs.

I would be very greatfull for a link or an attachment of such an template.

Thank you.

/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-dist/tex/latex/beamer/themes/color/
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-dist/tex/latex/beamer/themes/theme/

When I add \usetheme{Torino} to the latex preamble, and try to

Or is that a flawed assumption on my part?

 contain?

 JMarc

It *was*

.::/home/benjamin/bib

It's *now*

.:/usr/lib/texmf/texmf/bibtex/bib//::/home/benjamin/bib//

after additional experimentation and hunting through the source, it would
seem lyx doesn't parse the "::" at all, and doesn't seem to pass it off
to kpathsea... hard-coding the path into BIBINPUTS works, but is annoying,
because things are installed differently on the Solaris and Linux boxes..

And I've just discovered (i think), the glitch..
named "um99.bib", lyx hangs..
named "um.bib", lyx parses it ok...
But looking at the code, I can't see why this could possibly matter...

Can anyone duplicate this?

Thanks. I know where to head for information now :)

If I understand what you're asking, you need to use the latex command
\marginparwidth in the LaTeX Preamble (under the Layout Menu).

eg.

\marginparwidth 2in

There's probably 3 other ways to do it, but this is the one I was

citation problem with publication from same author, same year

For some reason the citation only refers to the
last four letters in the field year so the first number is not
written in the pdf.

I use natbib with apa-style and set \bibpunct[: ]{(}{)}{}{}{ }{} to
make the citation more customlike

For instance the
title of an entry which I entered as
Shukko (employee transfers) and tacit knowledge exchange in Japanese
supply networks: the electronics industry case appears as

Shukko (employee transfers) and tacit
knowledge exchange in japanese supply networks: the electronics
industry case.

Needless to say that I want it to be Japanese supply networks
instead of japanese supply networks. The same happens with names,
which should definitely be written with a capitol letter at the
beginning.

I also recognized that when I declare it as a book in Bibdesk/Bibtex,
every word starts with a capitol letter.

My question now is, can I manipulate the output somehow so that it
appears the way it should?

Thanks in advance,

ben

*I thought it may be a path or network drive problem in windows. When I run

*Which generates a file I can open with lyx, which is good. I had been
running it from a network drive (using expandrive) and having trouble. I was
also able to confirm it worked from local My Documents. It also worked in

I run the command directly on the tex2lyx on the network drive file it also
works:*
C:\Program Files\LyX16\bintex2lyx -f Z:\Documents\Macro\Predicting housing
prices with rates and risk\Latex_Output_for_Housing_Class_1.tex
Creating file Z:/Documents/Macro/Predicting housing prices with rates and
risk/Latex_Output_for_Housing_Class_1.lyx
then it returns to the command line and leaves the file

2010-08-06 Thread Benjamin Deschamps
Hi everyone,

I am finishing my thesis, have been using Lyx all along, so far so good. I hope
someone can help me out with two issues.

1) How can I insert appendices at the end of my document? I would also like
them listed in the TOC.

2) I have external PDF files embedded in the appendices. The are sized
according to the available text space (6.5 by 9 inches), so the header space is
not covered. How can I continue the page numbering and headers on theses pages?

Thanks in advance,

If you are using Insert:File:External Material and pdf pages, you are
already using the pages={} in the LyX/LaTeX options tab. If you want to
have the pages/header displayed, add the following to the command to the
LyX/LaTeX options tab (in LaTeX format):

 pages={WHATEVER YOU ALREADY
 HAVE},pagecommand={\thispagestyle{plain}},scale=1.0

This will make sure that every PDF page included has the command
\thispagestyle{plain} added during processing, which should show basic page
numbers. If you are using another style, use its name instead of plain (ie:
headings, fancy). See dialog Document:Settings:Page Layout:Headings Style for
the style name you are using.

If you do have some PDF pages which would cover the header space, change the
scale value above from 1.0 to a smaller value, just enough so that the
headers are uncovered. You can also look at the other options for pdfpages at
 http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/pdfpages/pdfpages.pdf.

bibdesk reference exportation

Does anybody knows a way to export the references in alphabetical

something that would give room for the following content:

  Synopsis

9 Appendix

I have been looking for this template myself but without result. I tried to

LyX is supposed to parse BIBINPUTS. What does your BIBINPUTS variable
 contain?

 JMarc

It *was*

.::/home/benjamin/bib

It's *now*

.:/usr/lib/texmf/texmf/bibtex/bib//::/home/benjamin/bib//

after additional experimentation and hunting through the source, it would
seem lyx doesn't parse the "::" at all, and doesn't seem to pass it off
to kpathsea... hard-coding the path into BIBINPUTS works, but is annoying,
because things are installed differently on the Solaris and Linux boxes..

1. check that you have the right xforms library.

2. if that doesn't help, tweak your LD_LIBRARY_PATH to find the libc5
libs. Things like wordperfect blow up if the LD_LIBRARY_PATH isn't
exactly /usr/i486-linux/libc5:/usr/X11R6 .. so your millage may vary.

If I understand what you're asking, you need to use the latex command

eg.

\marginparwidth 2in

There's probably 3 other ways to do it, but this is the one I was

I use MikTeX under Windows with Ghostscript/ImageMagick/etc. I also found
put the class paper.cls and it's layout in d:\programme\texmf\tex\latex\base
as I did in Linux. Ater taht I turned to MikTeX Options and refreshed the
file database AND I reconfiguered Lyx.
As result: NOTHING changed !

I don't know what to do now. I thank everyone who has an idea!

Best regards
Ben

I have a problem. I have written a work for the university in Lyx and
created it with the document-class article. Now I turned to paper because
of the it uses sans serif fonts nearly everywhere. But after I turned to
paper.cls I could not get Lyx compile to .ps or .pdf or anything else.

I hope anyone of you does have a solution.

Einfach:

% Sans als Standard
\renewcommand\familydefault{\sfdefault}

Im LaTeX Vorspann einfügen, das wars. Und das funktioniert mit so ziemlich
jeder Dokument Klasse.

Thomas

Can LyX handle standard bitmaps like PNGs?
Can it save to PDF format with bookmarks and links?

LyX on Phat Linux

2002-11-10 Thread Benjamin Huot
Does anyone know if LyX works with Phat Linux?

It uses one of the native Linux file systems - I think ex2 - its based on Mandrake
although it installs on
the same partition as Windows. You reboot to start it and it runs in a Dos session.

Minor request - add a feature which provides more instant feedback.

2005-11-21 Thread Benjamin Ari Schleimer
Hi After looking at lyx and going through the tutorial, I thought it
was a pretty good idea.
However, I do have some problems with it. The preview buttons don't give
as feedback as a pure WYSIWYG editor.
Maybe having an view (kpdf or kdvi) instantous updated after every edit
would be a good idea. Especially when changing character formatting.

Also an easy to find method for specifying a style would be helpful.

Thanks for an interesting experience,
Ben

PS. If you want to respond to me, you'll need to email me. I'm not on
the list.
