Thanks to you both. It worked. I had not thought to check in the document
settings as I assumed it was a global setting, but now I think about it, it
makes sense to be in the document settings. Because the default is a global
preference perhaps it would make sense for one to be able to change the
default setting also in one or two other places - such as in the spell
checker window or within the global preferences. That is my philosophy
anyway: that there should often be more than one way to do the same thing.
Cheers!

Changing native dictionary language

2011-03-14 Thread Christopher Reeve
Hi, I love the on the fly spell checker of 2.0 but can anyone tell me how to
change the default language? I'm using LyX 2.0rc1 on Mac 10.4.

In Preferences I have selected the User Interface Language as English(UK)
and the spellchecker engine as Native. Is there something I can type into
Alternative language to make the native language British English as
opposed to American English?

When spell checking by pressing F7 there is an option to change the language
and I can select UK English or another language but have to do this for each
word that is not in the American dictionary.

Cheers!

Chris.

Should the dmg installer for LyX 2.0 beta* work on Mac OS 10.4?

2011-02-18 Thread Christopher Reeve
Hi, I am impatient to test drive LyX 2.0 but have not been able to run any
of the beta versions. I open the dmg file provided
hereftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/lyx-2.0/beta4/LyX-2.0.0beta4+qt4.dmg,
drag LyX to the applications folder and try to run LyX but nothing happens.

I am running Mac OS 10.4, which is already out dated. Is this the problem or
should it work?

I haven't been able to install from source because I get errors when
updating to the required Qt libraries or something. Has anyone else got lyx
2.0 running on mac 10.4? Cheers! Chris.

Re: Should the dmg installer for LyX 2.0 beta* work on Mac OS 10.4?

2011-02-18 Thread Christopher Reeve
 Yes, this is the problem.
I've made the last Tiger compatible .dmg for alpha6.
I'll provide one more actual soon.

Thanks Stephan. It is *so* great to have spell checking on the fly!

There is one feature, which I wonder if it is not too late to request for in
2.0. That is, when one selects all the text (ctrl-a/cmd-a), that if one does
so within a box, such as a mini page or caption, that only the content of
the box is selected. Outside any box would select the whole document. Just
imagine how annoying it would be if when you are writing an email online and
go ctrl-a and the whole email page was selected?! What do you think?

Doing two ctr-a's could optionally still select the whole document. One
current annoying feature of doing a ctrl-a and then an esc is that one loses
one's current place, which can take a moment to find again in a long
document.

Has anyone else got lyx 2.0 running on mac 10.4?

Not me. I don't have it. (Don't know which smiley I should put here... :-))

The reason I have not updated is that I didn't have the time to set up all
the linux software again that took me ages to set up and was using daily.
Now I don't know if I should wait till summer for yet the next OS release!

The problem is that the \LyX macro is only defined if you type LyX
somewhere in your document. You could define it yourself in the

A slight problem I notice with it though is that if you click on an arrow
to expand a label menu, then click on one of the references to it, the menu

Sorry, this seems to be (mostly) fixed in the latest release candidate

You were warned that RCx is not for real work, right? ;-)

Yes, but I impatient. I backup regularly. :) If something goes seriously
wrong, the nice think about LyX is that I can still read the .lyx files in a
text editor!

If I compile the whole document then Command-Shift clicking in
Skim it will only relolcate the courser in the parent document in LyX -
 that
is if I am reading a middle chapter it does not work. Does anyone know if
there is a way to fix this?

No idea, but a general question:
Compared to the additional hassle the each-chapter-in-a-file approach
creates, do you really gain that much?

I used to prefer putting everything in one file but then I started including
large png images that greatly increased the compiling times. Because I like
to frequently preview my work by compiling to pdf I was frustrated how long
it was taking so broke everything to separate chapters. In addition to
speeding up previewing, LyX also slowly eats up my RAM. Keeping. I prefer
not collapsing my images (I would if they collapsed to small image icons),
so keeping the chapters separately means I don't open all images at once.

I believe it is generally known that the current Find/Replace is pretty
basic and that much could be improved (contributors welcome!). There is some
pretty hot stuff on its way though ...

Great. I look forward to it. Maybe my programming skills will be good enough
one day to be of some help. I'm really only experienced with basic C at the
moment.

Cheers,

Chris.

Skim, pdfsync and child documents in LyX. Possible?

2008-10-31 Thread Christopher Reeve
Hi, I just got Skim to pdfsync with LyX. It took me a while, and I think my
problems were that I had defined my lyxpipe in ~/.lyx/.lyxpipe. Now I set it
just as ~/.lyx. Another problem I had was that LyX could not find the
pdfsync.sty package so I downloaded it and stuck it in my working folder. If
anyone can tell me what I should have done please say!

My question now is, I am writing a long document with many chapters so I
stick all the chapters into child documents which I include in a parent
document. If I compile the whole document then Command-Shift clicking in
Skim it will only relolcate the courser in the parent document in LyX - that
is if I am reading a middle chapter it does not work. Does anyone know if
there is a way to fix this?

Your solution might be to proof read each chapter seperately. The only
problem with this is that I have many references to figures and equations in
different chapters and these would be shown as ??, so I have no way of
telling if the link is actually broken or not. Actually a most common
problem I have is forgetting to change the reference type - that is
sometimes I might refer to a figure number and other times to a page. I
don't really want to read the document again just to check for these errors.

Cheers,

Chris.

Mac OS 10.4, LyX 1.6rc4, Skim 1.1.13

ps, I might formally add this as a feature request: It would be very nice to
be able to search within child documents from within the parent document
with Find.

Also being able to search for occurences label names - both when they are
defined and or when they are refered to. This would make debugging much
easier when LyX refuses to compile.

This would make debugging much
easier when LyX refuses to compile.

problem including un-numbered introduction with fancy heading

2008-10-29 Thread Christopher Reeve
Hi,

I want my introduction in my thesis to be not numbered. I am also using
semi-fancy headings so that the chapter name is printed on the top left of
all pages within the chapter. My introduction covers a couple of pages but
the heading above the second page is inherited from the previous chapter (or
title). In my case the second page of my introduction has the words List of
Tables on the top because preceding the introduction is my list of tables.

Can anyone help me put this straight? I assume I just need to insert an
extra ERT command somewhere to set this title?

I am using the Report document class on LyX 1.6rc3, mac os 10.4.

Cheers,

Chris.

Yes thanks, I guess that is what I was after. However for some reason
if I try and modify the binding with the gui LyX always crashes when I
try and restart it the settings are lost.

I wondered if my mac.bind file was too out of date so I copied the
binding from /Applications/LyX-1.6.0rc3.app/Contents/Resources/bind

This however seems to be for LyX 1.4 and despite containing the line
\bind C-Returnnewline-insert newline

if I do a Command-Return nothing still happens.

Do you know where I can get an up to date bind file? Any idea why LyX
should crash each time I try and change which bind file I use or its
settings?

Cheers,

Chris.

Re: replace text

2008-07-23 Thread Christopher Reeve
I don't know about you, but I find having lots of ERTs in my document
distracting and a bit annoying!

My solution is similar but instead I use the math mode - that way I see the
actual symbol I typed...

eg, include the following line in your Preamble
\newcommand{\hho}{\text{H}_2\text{O}}

Then inside your document simply type Command-m (or Ctrl-m on a PC?) which
starts the equation editor
enter \hho as your equation and hit space a couple of times.

You should now have a nice compiled H20 to look at in your LyX document.

So that I can see for example the Angstrom symbol I type Command-m \text
space \AA Command-end (ie \text{\AA}) so that I actuall can see it rather
than an annoying ERT.

hypertarget in LyX

2008-07-23 Thread Christopher Reeve
I read all of my PDFs on the computer now, rather than print them out. Hence
I always like it when people use internal referencing within their PDFs.
Other than a basic reference to a figure number or external URL it is
sometime handy to link a word in your document to a particular section so
that it can be clicked on to navigate to that page.

For example, sometimes I mention a name. At the end of my PDF I list who all
the people are I have mentioned. I can create an internal reference with
some ERT to the persons description

\hypertarget{lyx:H.-Kiel}{H.\,Kiel} - sets the label

\hyperlink{lyx:H.-Kiel}{H.\,Kiel} - links back to the label

Is there a way in LyX to do this without the ERTs? I can't even figure it
out in LyX 1.6beta4

In the insert cross-refference tool it has a field to specify a name, but
you can't enter anything in the field. Does anyone know what this is for?
Should I be using prettyref - what ever it is?

Cheers,

Chris.

2008-06-28 Thread Christopher Reeve
Hi Etinne,

I know you won't exactly love this solution, but it does work. You can
remove the extra space again simply by entering a spacer with a user
value with a negative in front. eg -1 em. This removes the text up a
line again.

You have to give LyX more of a chance. Writing in LaTeX requires some
fiddling too and most problems you can get around with LyX. You just
need to find new ways sometimes.

There are so many advantages to writing in LyX when you get to know
it. I'd never go back!

How to I right-justify exponents? {_{10}^{100}X}

Hi,

I am using LyX 1.5.5 on a Mac OS 10.4

Other people writing plain LaTeX do this. Any ideas?

What if you import your .tex file into LyX by going FileImportLaTeX (plain)

Then copy and paste the bits you need into your main LyX document.

Does that work? If not you might have to modify your .tex file

What are the errors?

I just wanted to add to your comments the following.

When you start a display formula, if you hit return before doing so
it adds an extra space. If you start the equation but don't hit return
before no space is added.

The problem is that in LyX you can't see the difference, so you only
notice the large gap when you compile the document.

Bit annoying right?

Re: Reference Order and figure position problems

2008-02-11 Thread Christopher Reeve
Your second problem is a common feature of LaTeX when you have lots
of pictures and not many words. Basically it found there was not a
neat way of displaying the pictures amongst the text without either
having a title in an odd looking place or a mostly empty page in the
middle of a chapter.

I suggest you try a couple of things. If you really want the pictures
to be with the text try changing ALL of the pictures to be placed
Here if possible. I Don't recommend using Here definitely unless
it is a last option and note you might get some empty looking pages
appear at the slightest modification of any text.

Otherwise give into LaTeX and admit it is right. Insert a clear page
at a convenient place. This will prevent it being used by text so
some of your pictures will collect on it.. ie they'll catch up with
your text.

Note you can always refer to the page number the figures are on
automatically (on the reference pop-up box select the option
reference on page page)

having a title in an odd looking place or a mostly empty page in the
middle of a chapter.

Your second problem is a common feature of LaTeX when you have lots
of pictures and not many words. Basically it found there was not a
neat way of displaying the pictures amongst the text without either
having a title in an odd looking place or a mostly empty page in the
middle of a chapter.

multiple views of the same buffer

2007-12-19 Thread Christopher Reeve
Hi,

I'm using LyX 1.52 on a mac os 10.4.

On the wiki it says that with version 1.5 I should be able to have more than
one view of the same buffer.

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX15#toc3

This would be very useful to me. Could anyone tell me how to do this? When I
try to open the document I am just faced with the question: The document ... is
already loaded. Do you want to revert to the saved version?

If the solution is in the manual it is not tagged with the same key words so I
can't find it.

Btw, instead of using the word Revert I think the word Reload would better
suited here, as well as in the File menu, since it is a more commonly used key
name and it is essentially what LyX is asking if it should do. Obviously the
warning message would notify the user anyway that they are going back to an
older version if their changes have not been saved.

Cheers,

Chris.

installing LyX 1.5 0rc2 and BUG in exporting to 1.4

2007-06-29 Thread Christopher Reeve
Hi, I have two problems. I just bought a mac laptop which I would like to
install version 1.5 (which looks great) but am using linux(fedora 2) in my
office. Before installing to my laptop I tested LyX 1.5 on a Windoze machine.

Problem 1.
On Windose XP and LyX 1.5.0rc2 I tried to export a file to version 1.4, however
the images were lost in the process. When I reopened the file and clicked on
the image the File: address was blank. Any ideas?

Problem 2.
I was only trying to export to version 1.4 because I can't install version 1.5
on my Linux machine. When running ./Configure it reported the following errror:
** qt 4 library not found !
The version of qt installed on it was 3.3 so I upgraded to version 4.3. I'm not
an expert at installing Linux software but tried to follow the instructions.
I'm not sure if I added it to my path correctly, so this time I tried to
compile with
./Configure --with-extra-lib=/usr/localTrolltech/Qt/bin

but the error ** qt 4 library not found ! was returned again.

Please help!

Chris.

Ingenious! Problem 2 fixed. Thanks Todd.

In answer to yours. I am not supposed to know the root password and other
people use the machine. Hence I can get away with installing software unknown,
but not reinstalling the whole operating system. :)

It is compiling as I speak. Hopefully I won't have any more problems.

Cheers,

Chris.

My first comment/question is, if you can install Qt 4.3 on an FC2 box, any
reason you are not allowed to just update the whole box to Fedora 7?

IIRC, the problem is pkg-config does not know where to look.
I think something like setting
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=`find /usr/localTrolltech/Qt -name pkgconfig`
before running the lyx configure, would probably do it (assuming only one
pkgconfig directory).
