Why a processing error under Windows but not Linux?
Hi all, I have my students using LyX for their organic chemistry lab reports. I use a pretty standard installation at home under Debian, while most of them use Windows or Mac. One student in particular tried using an example file I posted for them, added material to it, then ran into problems when trying to view a pdf (or export, etc). Is it possible that his installation of TexLive is not complete? Or is there something else I'm oblivious to which would explain this? What else is important for people to be able to problem-solve this? I'm certainly not a guru at this sort of thing. Trying to combine articles into one file...
Hello, I'm planning to have my chemistry class create an in-house journal as a way of reporting their lab experiment results. Using the article class with a title/author/abstract/etc. seems to work well with that format, and I've successfully used psjoin and a book script I found online to create a complete booklet postscript file for printing. The problem of course comes with the page numbering if I have more than one report to piece together. I have tried combining two example files together, which looks fine in LyX but the second Title, Author, and Abstract fail. The book class doesn't fit the scheme of having a separate title, author, etc., per chapter. Is there any way to accomplish this easily? I appreciate any thoughts people may have! A slash o ?? Cannot get it...
Being a perfectionist, I'd love to get the name Bronsted properly spelled, with a slash through the o. Using LyX, I've inserted \o in ERT, but get an undefined control sequence error: ...Define a \inputencoding{latin1}{Br\onsted }\inputencoding{latin9}-Lowry The control sequence at the end of the top line of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue, and I'll forget about whatever was undefined. I can make umlauts, etc., but this one evades me. Does anyone know what my mistake is? Using LyX 2.0b3 in Debian (Sid). It happens with 1.6.7 as well. :( Thanks! Getting XeTeX/LyX 2.0 to work with my docs...
Hi, I've decided to give XeTeX a go as well as LyX 2.0, so have installed both on my Linux system (Debian Sid). First thing to do was to open a recent exam and change the settings to use XeTeX as the means of output, as well as the default viewer to XeTeX's pdf version. When I try to view the document, though, errors I've never seen before pop up. There are five, involving the Latex error of command \acute having already been defined, as well as analogous ones for \ddot, \tilde \grave, and \bar. Below them, the description says: \begin{document} Your command was ignored. Type I command return to replace it with another command, or return to continue without it. I haven't a clue as to what the problem is. If I try to view the DVI, I get the following error: Unable to access jarfile htmltolatex.jar Systemcall.cpp(237): Systemcall: 'java -jar htmltolatex.jar -input c1a_e2_f10.html -output c1a_e2_f10.tex' finished with exit code 1 Removing the XeTeX parts from the document makes it all go away. :( Does anyone have thoughts about this problem? One other area I perhaps should include is the preamble. Is one of the packages incompatible with XeTeX? \usepackage{accents} \usepackage{mdwlist} \usepackage{layout} \usepackage{multicol} \def\myalph#1{\expandaft...@myalph\csname c...@#1\endcsname} \d...@myalph#1{% \ifcase#1\or a\or b\or c\or d\or e\or ab\or ac\or ad\or ae\or bc\or bd \or be\or cd\or ce\or de\or abc\or abd\or abe\or acd\or ace\or ade\or bcd\or bce\or bde\or cde\or abcd\or abce\or abde\or acde\or bcde\or abcde \el...@ctrerr\fi} \renewcommand\labelenumii{(\myalph{enumii})} Many thanks for any help with this! Another wishlist item?
Don't know if this has been asked before, but I'd like to be able to take my images with me... so I wondered whether there had been any thoughts about an export to package option which would amount to creating a subdirectory under /tmp or ~ (or whatever Windows uses) into which all referenced items within a document would be copied. In my handouts I use images from all over the place under various courses, so it can be very tedious if I want to carry this to work. I personally don't care about lost links within the document since I can quickly fix that anyway... Once in such a directory, I can stick it on a flash drive, or zip it up to email myself. Page layout is greyed out as well. Well, part of the problem stemmed from my belief that the powerdot documentation was to be taken literally. They make a statement about putting the above into the options, which I obediently did. Once I remove them, the presentation comes up normally. Unfortunately this depends on what creates the pdf file (which is my ultimate goal, of course). dvipdfm - looks good as screen mode, but overlays show through as grey which I don't want. Xpdf is the same. pdflatex - this NEVER works. It dies in compilation with errors. ps2pdf - the greyed overlays are gone (totally hidden--good!), but the orientation is bad. It's placed on letter-portrait. If I add orient=portrait then I can see it all with dvipdfm but the greyed out material persists. Links (contents) don't work. ps2pdf works fine and all is seen. I have yet to find a combo (variations of letter=/orient=) which works the way I thought things would go to produce a full screen version, except plain portrait mode. ps2pdf is the only converter which properly creates a presentation with overlays completely out of sight. I'm glad to get the portrait version, but it would be nice to get a normal slide as well. I don't know where the problem is except that perhaps the way things get translated from LyX to LaTeX to the pdf files gets messed up from whatever standard powerdot needs to create a normal result. Powerdot slides off screen--no control of orientation?
Hi all, I'm trying powerdot as a quick way to create some slides, but have a problem of the slide being created in landscape mode but placed on portrait paper (if that makes any sense). I've tried putting nopsheader, orient=landscape, mode=present, paper=screen into the class options to no avail. Page layout is greyed out as well. Am I missing something? Or perhaps more directly, what am I missing? Thanks for any leads! Kenward -- Do not worry about your difficulties in mathematics. I can assure you that mine are still greater. Albert Einstein

Spacing between table cell contents and borders?
I've been finishing off a periodic table which I can insert into any classroom document, and am struggling to get the elements' masses to center in the cells. When I get up to numbers such as 123.45 it becomes evident that the cells have a preconceived notion about how far **left** they will place text; this leaves the right side pushing into the border of the adjacent cell. I have reduced the font size to smallest--any more makes it too small. I'd like to get the table to change this padding to something less, but can't find the command despite repeated searches. I guess I don't have the right keywords? The whole table would be set to center alignment. I figure there's got to be a command out there for it, but I can't find one that works yet (or perhaps I misused one already without knowing it). Does anyone know one? Does it have to be applied on a cell-by-cell basis or will it work on the whole table? You could try \setlength{\tabcolsep}{something smaller} and see if it helps. shifting a table outside margins?
Is there any way to force a table to move to the left outside the normal margins? I have a table in a document that really won't fit into a size any smaller than about 7 inches across, but I don't want margins to be that wide on letter paper. The other way I see attacking this would be to rotate the table, but then I'd want to rotate the whole page. I tried the package rotating (or rotate?..) but couldn't get it to work on the page with the table. :( TIA!
